US TO BOOK YOUR TALK FREE WATER TODAY! SAFETY TALKS FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

As part of our Community Access Program for Swimming (CAPS) program, in term 2 we began an initiative to provide FREE water safety talks to kindergartens and primary schools. This program has been a great success, allowing us to educate different kindergartens and primary schools. These talks cover important topics such as: identifying bodies of water, pool safety, beach safety, inland water safety, animals that are common to these water bodies, syringes and lifejacket knowledge. We make these talks as interactive as possible and all students receive a take home pack including a free swimming lesson if they are a new swimmer to Surrey Park Swimming.

If your local kinder or primary school would like to take advantage of this extra service we offer, please contact Lauren at [email protected] or give her a call on 9898 8876.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW

DIRECTOR OF COACHING IAN POPE

Our recent club breakfast welcomed back Ian Pope our new Director of Coaching to Surrey Park. For those that don’t know Ian he is a very experienced and highly regarded Platinum level coach.

A bit about Ian and why we are excited to have him back at Surrey Park.

Prior to starting in this role at Surrey Park, Ian was Head Coach of Vicentre for 16 years. Over this time he developed Vicentre to best placed Club at Australian Age and Open Championships. Ian has been selected as Victorian Coach of the year thirteen times. He has coached over fifty Olympic and World Championships medalists including Matt Welsh, , , Grant Hackett, Marieke Guehrer, Kotuki Ngawati . He has also been selected as an Australian Team Coach for two Olympics and six World Championships. Ian’s “swimming career” started at Surrey Park in 1983. He progressed from a learn to swim instructor to a full time swimming coach. He was the Club’s Head Coach from 1985 to 2001. Over this time Ian developed the Surrey Park program from learn to swim through to National level squads. He was instrumental in building the Club’s competitive program from 40 swimmers in just two lanes to over 200 swimmers. In 2001 following the 2000 Olympics, Ian moved to Vicentre which was operating out of the then recently opened MSAC facility. Ian has a strong record in building successful swim schools such as those at Surrey Park and Korowa Anglican Girls School. He has the knowledge and relationship building skills necessary for developing, improving and expanding learn to swim and competitive swimming programs. Ian also has a strong record in mentoring and developing the coaches who work alongside him. His vast technical knowledge and experience is a wonderful opportunity for the Surrey Park coaches to develop their skills to the highest level. We welcome Ian back and look forward to him continuing to develop Surrey Park into one of Victoria’s and Australia’s leading clubs.

CLUB RECORD HOLDERS Congratulations to our new Club Record Holders for achieving club records in the 2016/17 season. Ryder Cheesman, Thomas Curran, Spencer Robarts, Ryan Lobo, Lewis Clarke, Laura Davy, Hamish McDougall, Danielle Smithson, Connor Xu, Chantelle Underwood, Alexandra Good, Alex Hillman and Aiden Gleeson

COMMUNITY ACCESS PROGRAM

FOR SWIMMING

Term 2 has been a great term for our (CAPS) funded migrant and refugee swimming programs. We have successfully funded four Surrey Park families experiencing hardships. In addition, 37 migrants and refugees were able to attend a 5 week introductory swimming program. Twenty of the poorest and most in need students in this group continued on for a term of swimming lessons. Ten of these students have continued on from Term 1 this year and are improving their swimming skills significantly. Students who have successfully graduated are at an ability where they can swim a few laps by themselves and have knowledge of what to do if they are in danger in a body of water.

We want to thank you all for choosing to swim with us this term and allowing us to give back to our local community this way.
