  • Oshawa Strong in Face of Layoffs by Courtney Duffett and Jessica Verge the Oshawa Express
$1.00 Your Independent Local News Source Vol 3 No 28 Wednesday, May 7 2008 Oshawa strong in face of layoffs By Courtney Duffett and Jessica Verge The Oshawa Express Oshawa might be facing 1,000 lost jobs at General Motors this September but to any dark cloud theres a silver lining. The economy is still looking up for Durham Region, at least when it comes to the real estate market. Real estate is still pretty strong, says Ian Smith, a local real estate broker with RE/MAX Ability, adding that its too early to attribute current economics to job lay- offs that have yet to occur. Its still to far in advance. And while he believes the market is going to stay strong, Smith says the econo- my reacts to rumours and makes people more cautious. The uncertainty (with the economy) creates some delays in people making deci- sions, says Smith. However, he believes that the pressure to drop prices in the real estate market will be picked up by travel buyersthose will- ing to pay a little extra in gas and drive a Photo by Courtney Duffett/The Oshawa Express little further to get a cheaper cost in real estate. So we win either way, says Smith. Youth in action He says that even though the layoffs at GM is a downfall for Oshawa and Durham, James Wright takes some risks practicing jumps on his bike. He was one of many Oshawa youths at the official opening of the Donevan Skate Park as part of National Youth Week.

  • P-Bruins Stomp Wolf Pack to Lower Magic Number to Two
Providence Bruins Nathan Roberts [email protected], 401.680.4734 Eddie Pannone [email protected] P-BRUINS STOMP WOLF PACK TO LOWER MAGIC NUMBER TO TWO Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins defeated the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday night 6-3, lowering their magic number to clinch a playoff berth to two. The P-Bruins got two goals from Ryan Fitzgerald along with goals from Anton Blidh, Jordan Szwarz, Trent Frederic and Austin Czarnik while Zane McIntyre made his 42nd start of the season in net. Providence dominated the zone time in the opening period and it showed on the scoreboard. After being held scoreless despite an 8-1 shots edge through six minutes, Blidh gave the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead at 7:59. Taking a pass from Cameron Hughes, Blidh started a 2-on-1 break with Jack Studnicka up the right side. Rather than pass, Blidh surprised Hartford goalie Alexander Georgiev with a wrister from inside the right circle for his 11th goal of the season. Just 1:11 later, Szwarz doubled that lead with his 21st goal of the season. At the bottom of the left circle, he blasted a one-timer in off a pass from Fitzgerald to give Providence a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. That domination continued into period number two with Providence tacking on a trio of goals. Fitzgerald found the back of the net on the power play at 2:58, tapping a beautiful feed from Czarnik in from the crease to make things 3-0 Providence. He struck again at 8:37, taking advantage of a poor Hartford clearing attempt.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 9, 2018 Sabres call up defenseman Guhle, goalie Ullmark from AHL Associated Press Jan. 8, 2018 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres have called up top defensive prospect Brendan Guhle and goalie Linus Ullmark from their American Hockey League affiliate. The call-ups were made Monday, a day after Buffalo closed out seven straight games on the road with a 4-1 loss at Philadelphia. The Sabres host Winnipeg on Tuesday. Guhle has seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 35 games in his first season with Rochester. He was Buffalo’s second- round pick in the 2015 draft and played three games with the Sabres during the 2016 season on an emergency call-up basis. Ullmark is tied for the AHL lead with 17 wins and ranks fourth with a .928 save percentage this season. He is 8-11-2 in 21 NHL career games. Sabres reward Guhle as defense prospect continues his growth The Buffalo News By John Vogl January 8, 2018 Brendan Guhle is putting his faith in the Buffalo Sabres' development plan. If they feel the defenseman should be in Rochester, that's fine by him. If they want to give him a chance in Buffalo, that's obviously a nice bonus. It's time to cash in that bonus. The Sabres have recalled their top defense prospect, and he's expected to be in the lineup Tuesday when Winnipeg visits KeyBank Center. "They said I earned the recall, and I'll just play my best," said Guhle, who joined the Sabres for Monday's practice.
