2018 – 2019 Professional Guest Artist Series Duncan Theatre presents 2018 – 2019 PROFESSIONAL GUEST ARTIST SERIES Friday & Saturday Night Modern Dance Series JESSICA LANG DANCE Fri. & Sat., January 11 & 12, 2019 @ 8PM Jessica Lang, Juilliard graduate and former member of Twyla Tharp’s company, THARP!, is widely recognized as one of the most talented choreographers of her generation. The New York-based Jessica Lang Dance was founded in 2011 and makes its Duncan Theatre debut this season. Recipient of the 2014 Bessie Award and 2017 Arison Award, Jessica is also known for her work outside of JLD. Her choreography has been performed by prominent companies around the world, from original compositions for American Ballet Theater and the National Ballet of Japan, to her work on the production of Aida directed by Francesca Zambello for the San Francisco and Washington National Opera companies. Based in Scotland, they have performed at London’s Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, St. Martin in the Fields, and the BBC Chamber Music Proms, and at festivals across the UK, including their own Loch Shiel Festival in the Scottish highlands. Their current season takes them to Denmark, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, France and China. JULIAN G – DIRECT FROM CARNEGIE HALL (JULIAN GARGIULO, PIANO) Wednesday, February 6, 2019 @ 2PM Born and educated in Italy, Mr. Gargiulo studied at the Verona State Conservatory (Randone), the Mugi Academy in Rome (Ciccolini) and the Moscow State Conservatory (Mezhlumov). He performs regularly throughout the world in halls such as Carnegie Hall, United Nations' Dag Hammarskjöld Auditorium, Moscow Conservatory Hall, Verona Philharmonic Hall, The Esplanade (Singapore) and the Seymour Theatre Centre (Australia) among many others. Known for his collaborative spirit recent partnerships include performances with soprano Olga Makarina (Metropolitan Opera), violinists Elizabeth Zeltser (NY Philharmonic), Dmitri Berlinsky (Paganini Gold medalist), Lucio Degani (Solisti Veneti), and trumpet virtuoso Joe Burgstaller (Canadian Brass). NATALIE CLEIN, CELLO Wednesday, March 20, 2019 @ 2PM Appointed as the first Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at Oxford University in 1,000 years, British cellist Natalie Clein has built a distinguished career, regularly performing at major venues and with orchestras worldwide such as the Philharmonia, the Royal Philharmonic, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Orchestre National de Lyon, and both the Vienna Chamber and English Chamber Orchestras. In 1999 Natalie was appointed as one of the first Artists to join the BBC Radio 3 New Artists Scheme and this past season she curated a series of concerts for BBC Radio 3. These concerts were recorded live at LSO St. Luke’s bringing in record audience numbers for the lunchtime series. GOLDSTEIN-PELED-FITERSTEIN TRIO – PIANO, CELLO AND CLARINET Wednesday, April 3, 2019 @ 2PM Longtime friends bound by their Israeli roots and summers shared in Vermont at the Marlboro Music Festival, and now trio members for a decade, Alon (piano), Amit (cello) and Alex (clarinet) performances reflect their marvelous sense of ensemble and love of chamber music. Wonderfully varied programs include such works as the Beethoven and Brahms Clarinet Trios, sonatas and solo works that demonstrate both the artists' virtuosity and their infectious musicality.     Mandy is starring in the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” and is best known for her emotional portrayal of Nina Rosario in the Tony Award winning, Lin-Manuel Miranda Broadway musical In the Heights, a role she originally created Off Broadway at 37 Arts, which received a Drama Desk Award for Best Ensemble. One might just grow up to win awards and electrify the Broadway stage in New York. At a General Services Christmas party at Piper Tech in the early 1990s, Paul Gonzalez, Warehouse Worker, General Services, brought his young daughter, Mandy, in to sing selections from Disney’s The Little Mermaid, accompanied by a karaoke machine. That very same Mandy Gonzalez is now one of Broadway’s brightest lights, having starred in five Broadway musicals, including the ground- breaking In the Heights. Before that, she won an Obie Award for Eli’s Coming, her first perform- ance Off-Broadway. Currently you can catch her playing Elphaba in the wickedly popular Wicked. “I remember him waking up before dawn and kissing me goodbye while I was still half asleep,” Mandy said from New York of her memories growing up in a City Employee household. “When we had a day off from school, we would go and meet him for lunch, and he would take us downtown. Every time we would drive by his work on the weekends, he would always point out the helicopters that were land- ing on top of the building. I remember thinking Mandy Gonzalez took over the role of Elphaba in Wicked how amazing that was.

Travis Follow this and additional works at: http://digitalcommons.uconn.edu/dissertations Hamilton: A Musical Analysis of Ensemble Function Matthew Louis Travis, DMA The University of Connecticut, 2017 Abstract There have been exhaustive studies on the presence of chorus in opera, there has been little writing on the musical theater ensemble.1 To date, the only specific piece of academic scholarship on the matter is Joseph DeLorenzo’s 1985 dissertation, The Chorus in American Musical Theater: An Emphasis on Choral Performance. Because there are very few graduate programs in musical theater, and currently none at the doctoral level, there has been little scholarly writing about this art form as a whole and even less scholarship specific to ensemble function completed in the last 30 years. Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda is one of the most successful Broadway productions in recent memory. While the work has gained fame for unparalleled box office success and celebrity appearances; the show is equally significant as a work of art. Almost universally acclaimed by critics, Hamilton has won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, while receiving a record 16 Tony nominations winning 11, winning the George Washington Book Prize and Kennedy Prize for Drama.

The diversification of Broadway theatre over the prior decade had provided Miranda with a stage upon which to showcase both the plight and the rich culture of the Latino community in Washington Heights, New York. He seized this opportunity, creating a vibrant cityscape by employing a nontraditional score of rap and Latin music to invoke the foot-tapping pulse intrinsic to the Latino community. However, Miranda’s mission went beyond entertainment to a deep-rooted desire to use the Broadway spotlight to dispel commonly accepted, cultural stereotypes of Latino immigrants. While the characters portrayed in the play trace their roots to Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, Miranda’s message could be extrapolated to other Latino nationalities. Success often attracts criticism and some critics accused Miranda of depicting an idealized picture of life in Washington Heights. While these critics may have been correct, the overwhelming acclaim for In The Heights served to validate Miranda’s goal of creating positive roles for Latino thespians and mitigating negative stereotypes of Latinos generally.
