The Nature of Boulder-Rich Deposits in the Upper Big Flat Brook Drainage, Sussex County, New Jersey

McLearie, Joanne C. Kornoelje, and Thomas J. Glynn Department of Earth & Environmental Studies Montclair State University 1 Normal Avenue Montclair, New Jersey, 07043 ABSTRACT: The upper reaches of the Big Flat Brook drainage, northwest of Kittatinny Mountain, contain a variety of glacial, pro-glacial, and periglacial deposits from the Late Quaternary. The area is dominated by recessional moraines and ubiquitous ground moraine, along with meltwater deposits, drumlins, and possible post- glacial periglacial features. We have identified a curious boulder-rich deposit in the vicinity of Lake Ocquittunk and Lake Wapalanne on upper Big Flat Brook. The area where these boulder deposits occur is mapped (1:24,000 surficial geology) as till. As mapped and observed, larger cobbles and boulders within the till are quartz-pebble conglomerate, quartzite, sandstone, and shale. The boulder-rich deposits differ from the typical till, however. Unlike the local till, which is more mixed in lithology, the boulder deposits are nearly exclusively Shawangunk conglomerate. The deposits are discontinuous, but appear to occur at a topographic level above the meltwater stream terraces. The boulders in the deposits lie partially embedded in soil, but are very closely spaced. The boulders range in size from ~20cm to over 100cm, and present a subrounded to subangular shape. There appears to be a fabric orientation of the boulders, NE-SW, with subsidiary orientations. As the boulder deposits differ from other mapped features in the area, we attempt to ascertain the origin for the deposits. -

Assessing the Petroleum Geology and Future Development of the Clendenin Gas Field in Kanawha County, West Virginia By: Jonathan Prevatte August 2020 Director of Thesis: Donald W. Neal Major Department: Geological Sciences Petroleum is one of the main sources for energy production in the US and is therefore important for the continuation of economic growth. Future development of petroleum resources in the US to meet supply demands is equally important. Understanding the controls on petroleum production will help in determining where and how to development these resources for maximum production. West Virginia is home to many gas fields and is underlain by one of the more prominent gas producing shales, the Marcellus Shale. The Clendenin Gas Field in Kanawha County is one of the historical gas producing areas found in West Virginia. This assessment is focused on the Devonian strata throughout the field including the Marcellus Shale. Using available geophysical logs, production data, and historic well records obtained from the West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey (WVGES), cross-sections, isopach maps, and structure contour maps were created to give a visual representation of the subsurface geology across the field. Construction of the cross-sections and maps in conjunction with production and well record data aided in the identification of controls influencing production throughout the field. Applying the findings of this assessment to future production may reduce costs and improve yields of future petroleum wells. Results of this study indicate several options should be considered when planning for future production wells within the field. Target areas include the areas to the east of the field where formations tend to thicken. -

The two formations are I fthologically and faunally distinct and are separated by a disconformity; together they rest on local remnants of the Oriskany SandsTone or on rocks of Si lurian age. The Bois Bianc Formation thickens rapidly to the west but thins and disappears just east of the Genesee Va: ley, !n eastern New York its equivalent is the Schoharie Grit. The Onondaga Limestone passes westward into the Detroit River and Columbus Formations and possibly the lower part of the Delaware Lime stone in addition. Toward the eas+ the upper part of the Onondaga (Seneca Member) grades laterally into the lower part of the overlying Marcellus Shale. Coral faunas in the Bois Blanc and Onondaga Formations are dis tinct and can be used for correlating within the northeastern North American province. Patches of the Oriskany Sandstone are known 50 mi les west of Buffalo alld sand, presumably derived from the Oriskany, is locally preserved in the base of overlying formations.
