The Lord’s Service March 27, 2016 WELCOME TO PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America

Thank you for visiting Redeemer Presbyterian Church— Midtown Detroit congregation; a new church in the heart of the city, with a heart for the city.

We believe there is a true renaissance underway in the city of Detroit, but that a lasting renaissance will not only involve positive advancement in industry, education and commerce, but also a collaboration of churches working together to make the accessible to all people, and to seek the welfare of the city we are called to serve.

Redeemer is striving to build a community that is as racially ethnically, and socio-economically diverse as our city, in which believers and skeptics can explore the big questions of life and ’s answers, work together for a thriving city, and serve those in need in the neigh- borhoods in which we live.

Our Sunday worship services are vibrant, liturgical and participatory. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper each week because we believe ’ promise that it is true food for the soul as a means of God’s grace to his people.

Again, thank you for visiting Redeemer. It is our hope that you will find us to be a community where Detroiters can experience the hospitality, peace and transforming presence of Jesus .

To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a savior; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; to whoever will come - this church opens wide her doors and offers you welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Order for the Public Worship of God Easter Sunday

REFLECTION “Apart from [the resurrection] the incarnation and the ministry would lose all their significance, the crucifixion would be but a martyrdom, and the cross a symbol of the victory of death over life. By the Resurrection it was that the Crucified One was “declared to be the Son of God with power,” the great truth on which the Christian’s faith is founded, and to which his hope is anchored. That Christ died for our sins is the Gospel of the Christian religion regarded as a human cult. The Gospel of Christianity goes on to declare “That He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:4). And to show the immeasurable importance of the added words, the Holy Spirit testifies that if Christ be not raised, our faith is vain, we are yet in our sins... The empty tomb, and not the manger of Bethlehem, is the earthly symbol of the great birth upon which Christianity is founded. Were it not for Bethlehem there could be no Calvary; but, apart from the Resurrection, Calvary were but a stupendous disaster, of which the Cross would be for all time the emblem.” | Sir Robert Anderson, Christian author and Presbyterian theologian

“When I looked at religion I said, I have two questions. One, has anybody ever conquered death, and two, if they have, did they make a way for me to conquer death? I checked the tomb of Buddha, and it was occupied, and I checked the tomb of Confucius and it was occupied, and I checked the tomb of Mohammed and it was occupied, and I came to the and it was empty. And I said, There is one who conquered death. And I asked the second question, Did He make a way for me to do it? And I opened the Bible and discovered that He said, ‘Because I live ye shall live also.’” | Dr. G. B. Hardy, Canadian scientist

“I know the resurrection is a fact, and Watergate proved it to me. How? Because 12 men testified they had seen Jesus raised from the dead, then they proclaimed that truth for 40 years, never once denying it. Every one was beaten, tortured, stoned and put in prison. They would not have endured that if it weren’t true. Watergate embroiled 12 of the most powerful men in the world-and they couldn’t keep a lie for three weeks. You’re telling me 12 apostles could keep a lie for 40 years? Absolutely impossible.” | Charles Colson

OFFERTORY

6 THE PROCLAMATION OF GOD’S WORD Luke 24:1-12

READER 1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

TITLE: “The Power Of The Resurrection” Rev. Dan Millward (notes)

8 Parents at this time please pick your children up at the auditorium entrance

CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE We warmly welcome to the table all who trust in Jesus Christ for their salvation, have been publicly baptized and have publicly professed their faith as members of any Christian church.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH THE NICENE CREED ALL We believe in one God, the Father, Almighty, Maker of and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God of God, Light of Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through whom all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy *catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

*catholic meaning the “whole or universal church.” 9 CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

MINISTER The Lord be with you. Ruth 2:4 ALL And also with you.

MINISTER Lift up your hearts! Lamentations 3:41 ALL We lift them up to the Lord!

MINISTER Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Psalm 118:1 ALL It is right to give him thanks and praise.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING MINISTER It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, Almighty Father and Everlasting God. We praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us and has taken away the sins of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has restored to us everlasting life. We ask you to bless these common elements of bread and wine for holy use, and use them to strengthen and edify your people. We give you thanks, Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

MINISTER Let us boldly proclaim the mystery of the faith. ALL Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION AND THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

At Redeemer Midtown Detroit, we come forward to receive communion. You may partake of the bread and the cup as you receive them. Wine is in the clear cups in the outer rings of the tray and grape juice is available in the inner ring of the tray in the purple cups. Gluten free bread is also available upon request.

Children of believers who are not Communicant members (have not yet made a public profession of faith) should refrain from receiving the elements, but they are encouraged to come forward with their families. They will be acknowledged and will receive a word of encouragement from the pastor.

*The Ushers will dismiss you by section and row to come forward for communion.

10 INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS YOU CAN PRAY DURING COMMUNION If you will not be partaking in the Lord’s Supper today, please use this time to meditate on one of the following prayers.

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I repent of my sins of self-ruling and self-saving. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Thank you that my sin and rebellion are Yours, and Your righteous, perfect, and obedient life is mine through faith in You. Knowing that you died on the cross and have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive and rest upon you alone as my Savior and Lord. I now resolve in humble reliance on the Holy Spirit, through the power of the gospel graciously working in my life, to walk in manner pleasing to You. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in You the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

11 COMMUNION/CLOSING SONG IN CHRIST ALONE

ALL In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all, here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe! This Gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied; For every sin on Him was laid, here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay, light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the pow’r of Christ in me From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home, here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

As we seek the welfare of the city to which God has called us—Detroit, Michigan in 2016 and beyond, is what we are all about. Redeeming people with the good news of the Gospel; redeeming broken lives with the love and generosity of the Church, and participating in the redeeming of a city that has been imprisoned and devastated by corruption, bankruptcy, physical destruction, drug and alcohol addiction, and the destruction of biblical/family values.

The launch team, the advisory team and many others have enthusiastically agreed, “Redeemer is the perfect name for our church family moving forward.”

Names Mean Something

The condition—Everyone is in need of redemption. Our natural condition was characterized by guilt: “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Christ’s redemp- tion has freed us from guilt, being “justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).

The word redeem means “to buy out.” The term was used specifically in reference to the purchase of one who was held captive. The application of this term to Christ’s death on the cross is quite telling. If we are “redeemed,” then our prior condition was one of captivity. God has purchased our freedom, and we are no longer in bondage to sin or to the Old Testament law. This metaphorical use of “redemption” is the teaching of Galatians 3:13 and 4:5.

The benefits of redemption include eternal life (Revelation 5:9-10), forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), righteousness (Romans 5:17), freedom from the law’s curse (Galatians 3:13), into God’s family (Galatians 4:5), deliverance from sin’s bondage (Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 1:14-18), peace with God (Colossians 1:18-20), and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). To be redeemed, then, is to be forgiven, justified, freed, adopted, made holy and reconciled. See also Psalm 130:7-8; Luke 2:38; and Acts 20:28.

The future—The streets of heaven will be filled with former captives who, through no merit of their own, find themselves redeemed, forgiven, and free. No wonder we will sing a new song—a song of praise to the Redeemer who was slain (Revelation 5:9). Jesus paid the price to redeem us!

The mission of the Church is to lead all people to redemption. And as people are redeemed, in some sense, our city will be redeemed. May God use us mightily to this end!
