The retreat will take two recent texts by Pope Francis that lay out a vision of a post-pandemic future in which fraternity, rather than individualism, can be the organising principle of our world. Let Us Dream, which came out in December 2020, is the first ever book by a pope in response to a crisis. In it, Francis offers us a three-step way of changing so that we emerge better from the pandemic: by learning to contemplate, discern and take action. Fratelli Tutti (‘Brothers and Sisters All’) is the title of Pope Francis’ October, 2020 encyclical letter on human fraternity and social friendship. ➢ Saturday 5th June: The Wisdom of St Benedict Led by Fr Martin McGee OSB. Three talks exploring the riches of St Benedict’s rule which seeks to help us live out the Christian life in all its fullness. ➢ Fri 18th-Sun 20th June: The Motif of Feast in the Bible Led by Viv Randall and Michael Woodward (both Lay Community of St Benedict) Further information and to book your place online: https://worth.co.uk/retreats/online- retreats For enquiries, please email: [email protected] • Are you struggling with bereavement or loss? During a Consistory, the Cardinals “assist the Supreme Pastor of the Church through collegial action” by offering their counsel on matters of particular importance to the whole Church. At Monday’s Consistory, Pope Francis confirmed the vote of the Cardinals to proceed with the canonization of seven Blesseds, who will be raised to the altars in the coming weeks and months, according to a schedule to be set at a later time. Once canonized, the holy men and women will be recognised as Saints throughout the universal Church. Blessed Lazarus (Devasahayam) Pillai: One martyr is numbered among the Blesseds who will are set to be canonized. Blessed Lazarus, known as Devasahayam, was a Brahmin of the Nair caste in India. Converted to Catholicism by a Jesuit priest in 1745, Devasahayam Pillai took the name Lazarus when he became a Christian. In his preaching, he particularly insisted on the equality of all peoples, despite caste differences. This aroused the hatred of the higher classes, and he was arrested in 1749. After enduring increasing hardships, he received the crown of martyrdom when he was shot on 14 January 1752. Blessed Lazarus is the first lay person from India to be canonised. Blessed Charles de Foucauld: Blessed Charles de Foucauld was a French soldier who travelled extensively in Northern Africa. Originally a fallen-away Catholic, he embraced the Faith at the age of 28. Blessed Charles found his vocation during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He was ordained at the age of 43, after which he returned to the desert in Algeria, where he lived a life of meditation, prayer and study. He was killed on 1 December 1916 by a band of marauders. Blessed Charles de Foucauld inspired a “spiritual family” which follows his way of life. Founders and Foundresses: Three priests who founded religious orders – César de Bus, Luigi Maria Palazzolo, and Giustino Maria Russolillo; and two religious foundresses – Maria Francesca di Gesù and Maria Domenica Mantovani – round out the number of Blesseds whose causes were given definitive approval at Monday’s Consistory. Saints of the Week Memorial of St John I, Pope, Martyr – 18th May St John I (+526) was an elderly archdeacon at the time of his election as Bishop of Rome in 523. His brief pontificate was caught up in the violent politics of the age. He was sent by the Gothic King of Italy, Theodoric, who was an Arian heretic, on a mission to Byzantium to secure mutual toleration between Catholics and Arians, and to try to bring the Eastern and Western Churches closer together. Theodric suspected him of conspiring with the eastern Emperor and imprisoned him. St John died shortly afterwards and is venerated as a martyr. Memorial of St Dunstan, Bishop – 19th May St Dunstan (909-988) belonged to a noble family and served as Abbot of Glastonbury (Somerset) and Bishop of Worcester and London and finally Archbishop of Canterbury. He was zealous in building churches, promoting monastic life and restoring ecclesiastical discipline. He was buried at Canterbury Cathedral. Memorial of St Bernadine of Siena, Priest – 20th May Born in 1380, near Siena, Bernardine entered the Francisan Order. He journeyed throughout Italy, preaching of God’s mercy; he encouraged devotion to the holy name of Jesus. He died in 1444 during a preaching tour at Aquila, where he was buried. Memorial of St Christopher Magellanes and Companions, Martyrs – 21st May The Feast recalls the martyrdom of twenty-two priests and three laymen in Mexico between 1915 and 1937. These witnesses include St Christopher Magallanes (Cristóbal Magellanes Jara, 1869-1927) who as a priest founded a seminary in his hometown of Totatiche and ministered zealously in the face of persecution.

Diocesan Bulletin - January, 2015 Mar Jacob Angadiath with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Canonization of Saint Chavara Kuriakose & Saint Euphrasia The faith confession of St. Thomas the Apostle, “My Lord and My God”, stands in the history as the most profound confession on Jesus’ true identity. ‘Lord’ and ‘God’ are the equivalent words for the Greek terms ‘Kyrios’ and ‘Theos’ respectively used to denote the Hebrew words ‘Yahweh’ and ‘Elohim’, two expressions used to address the Almighty One. Making use of these words to the Resurrected Lord, Thomas equates Jesus to the Absolute Deity. He connects the Old Testament and New Testament understanding of God. For private circulation only 2 Krupa Nidhan Message of the Shepherd The feast of Qyomdo is celebrated yet again. However every Easter is a renewal of the assurance of our destiny which is not just to fade away here. It is the guarantee that our faith is not futile and that our proclamation is not in vain (1 Cor 15: 17). God out of his infinite love and mercy gave His only son to redeem this world. (John 3:16). The Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, suffered, died and was resurrected so that we may have life in abundance. (John 10:10). All this was realized only because the Mercy of God became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ, our Master. The Year of Mercy reiterates this reality. And the feast of resurrection, in this context, becomes for us an obligation to ‘be merciful like our heavenly Father’ (Luke 6:46). This obligation is to be lived in our daily lives through our small acts of love and kindness to our fellow beings especially those in need.

  • Pope Approves Canonizations, but Doesn’
Pope approves canonizations, but doesn’t set date because of pandemic VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The sainthood causes of seven men and women — including the hermit Blessed Charles de Foucauld and the Indian martyr Devasahayam Pillai — cleared their final hurdle May 3 during an “ordinary public consistory,” a meeting of the pope, cardinals and promoters of sainthood causes that formally ends the sainthood process. The meeting included a prayer, an affirmation that Church law had been followed in preparing for the candidates’ declaration of sainthood and a formal request “in the name of Holy Mother Church” that Pope Francis set a date for the canonizations. Speaking in Latin, Pope Francis approved the canonizations but said the date for the ceremony would have to be determined later, Vatican News reported, because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Blessed Charles de Foucauld is undoubtedly the best known of the seven saints-to-be. Pope Francis, in his encyclical “Fratelli Tutti, on Fraternity and Social Friendship,” described Blessed de Foucauld as a “person of deep faith who, drawing upon his intense experience of God, made a journey of transformation toward feeling a brother to all.” “Blessed Charles directed his ideal of total surrender to God toward an identification with the poor, abandoned in the depths of the African desert,” the pope wrote. “In that setting, he expressed his desire to feel himself a brother to every human being and asked a friend to ‘pray to God that I truly be the brother of all.’ He wanted to be, in the end, ‘the universal brother.’ Yet only by identifying with the least did he come at last to be the brother of all.

FOUNDER’S NOTE Dear Friends, Persecution Relief commemorated Indian Christian Martyrdom Day (ICMD), on 22nd July 2017, which was observed to acknowledge, remember and stand with families who have lost their dear ones as Martyrs for Jesus Christ, in India. This event created great awareness across the Church’s, Bible Colleges, Mission Organisations and Christian institutions in India. We take this opportunity to thank all of you, from several 100’s of Church’s, for your overwhelming response, joining hands with us in commemorating this unique annual event. The time has come for us to join together again, to observe the 2nd Indian Christian Martyrdom Day (ICMD) on 22nd of July 2018, to pray for the families of Martyrs & the Persecuted Church in India. As this day falls on a Sunday, we request all Church’s, Bible Colleges & Christian Institutions to spare few minutes to Pray and educate the Church members about the event. To suffer death for the sake of Christ and His Gospel is a gift and an honour that glorifies Christ. The sacrifice of these families who have lost the dear ones, is great in the sight of the Lord; the remembrance of them will be pleasant, and the reward far above all their services and sufferings. In the present times, the Church in India has a greater role and responsibility to play, in standing alongside the Persecuted brethren. For families, the pain of losing a loved one – for a mother who has lost her son, for a wife who has lost her husband and for a child who has lost a parent – the Church must continue to support and express solidarity to them, the body of Christ, irrespective of the denominations we belong.

  • Towards a Historiography of Martyr Devasahayam Historiography of Martyr Devasahayam J
    J. Rosario Narchison Towards a Towards a Historiography of Martyr Devasahayam Historiography of Martyr Devasahayam J. ROSARIO NARCHISON, Indian School of Asian Theology, Whitefield. Devasahayam is a household name among the Catholics and other Christians in the southern districts of Kerala and Tamilnadu. (The name of the present bishop of Chennai is also Devasahayam). Parents continue to name their children as Devasahayam though the latter’s original name, Neelakandan, may not be known to them. The name Devasahayam was, probably for the first time, owned by a palace official and a Nair convert to Christianity who died for his Christian faith in 1752 in the erstwhile state of Thiruvithancoor, South India. Today, 250 years after his death, people still remember him with affection and admiration, as can be seen from the large concourse of pilgrims at the place of his martyrdom at Aralvaimozhi, at his grave in the cathedral at Kottar, Nagercoil and at Nattalam, the place of his birth. Our question is: is it possible to construct his biography with the aid of critically examined primary and secondary sources? How reliable is the historiography of martyr Devasahayam? The Random House Unabridged Dictionary defines historiography as “the narrative presentation of history based on the critical examination, evaluation and selection of material from primary and secondary sources and subjected to scholarly criteria.” Living Primary Sources Primary sources are two-fold: “living” and written. The strongest “living” testimony or source, in my opinion, is the fact that this ‘layman’ lies buried within the cathedral church and that too in front of the main altar, of the diocese of Kottar.

During the third and second millennium BC Indus valley and Sumer had very flourishing civilisations. Ancient tablets discovered from Ur the home town of the ancestors of Abraham indicates the existence of trade between Sumer and Indus valley. The Brahmi script of India and Sumerian are related. Gradually Dravidians from the Indus Valley were pushed to the south and north India underwent Arianization. The contacts between Phoenicia and South India go back to second millennium BC. Jews came into contact with south India in the tenth century BC following the commercial enterprises of Solomon. They were following the footsteps of Phoenicians from the Tsur and Sidon.
