The Tragedy of Isabel Archer in the Portrait of a Lady 0 Frgs
UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO RIO GRANDE DO SUL , INSTITUTO DE LETRAS 叫り CURSO DE P◇S-GRADUAcAO EM LETRAS The Tragedy of Isabel Archer in The Portrait of a Lady ROSLIA A. NEUMANN GARCIA Disserta9ao apresentada a Banca Examinadora como exig6ncia parcial para a obten9ao do grau de Mestre em Letras: Literatura Anglo-americana. Profa. Dra. RITA TEREZINT-JA SCHMIDT ORIENTADORA Porto Alegre, setembrQ de 1994 ノ 0 FRGs ~Setorial de Ciencias Sociais eHlユ11地ldd鼻d" ABSTRACT The importance of classical tragedy, and Greek art in general, has been analyzed in itself and in relation to many works which were produced throughout the history of literature. The idea of "modern tragedy" is important in this sense, since it will explain the transportation of elements of Greek tragedy to literary works of diverse historical periods, with the necessary and natural transformation tragedy went through due to the differences of time, place, culture, etc. In any case, the long-lasting influence of this ancient form of art is a source of a great number of studies The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, published in 1881, is a modern novel which will be analyzed in this dissertation as having a tragic view of life. This can be seen through the actions of the principal character and in the turn of events which occur. The modern elements of tragedy present in the novel will be related to the classical ones to analyze the dilemma the heroine, Isabel Archer, faces, and to describe the ambiguity and contradictions this heroine deals with in judging and choosing the action she will take The necessity to organize the narrative patterns which indicated the tragic view in James' novel, led to a brief review of some ideas taken from semiotics, specifically those connected to the study of the polarity of signs in language. -

L'infinito. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SHIFTING WHITENESS: a LIFE
ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: SHIFTING WHITENESS: A LIFE HISTORY APPROACH TO U.S. WHITE PARENTS OF “BIRACIAL” OR “BLACK” CHILDREN Joshua Carter Woodfork, Doctor of Philosophy, 2005 Dissertation directed by: Professor John L. Caughey Department of American Studies This research examines how the experiences of parenting “biracial” or “black” children have affected the beliefs o f white parents who have published books and essays regarding their situations. The participating parents claim that because of their relationship with their children of African descent their self -understandings, including their own sense of their racial identity, are altered. They now speak of themselves as “not quite white,” “black by proxy,” or as a “bridge” (between the races). My dissertation, “Shifting Whiteness: A Life History Approach to U.S. White Parents of ‘Biracial’ or ‘Black’ Children,” expl ores how such parents talk about and conceptualize their experiences, including the implications of these parents’ claims of racial identity transformation. This dissertation posits that the white parents’ shift in attitudes and beliefs reflects their vivid engagement with the racism and racial experiences that their children endure. The discord between the parents’ claim of racial transformation and their continued benefiting from white privilege is also examined. Consider ation of the parents’ shifts provides a better understanding of racial beliefs and transformations at the individual, micro -level, which contributes to society’s general knowledge about the conception of race. Understanding white parents’ decisions to writ e about their identity transformations as —to use Michael Omi and Howard Winant’s (1994) phrase —a “racial project,” I investigate its aims and limits, exploring which racial projects are presented by this group of U.S. -

INDIANA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY An Indiana Soldier in Love and War: The Civil War Letters of John V. Hadley Edited by James I. Robertson, Jr.* Contributed by Mrs. Jane Hadley Comer** Indiana’s participation in the Civil War was varied and valuable. It was the birthplace of a host of Federal generals, including Ambrose Burnside, Lew Wallace, John T. Wilder, Jefferson C. Davis, and Robert Milroy. The state’s wartime executive, Governor Oliver P. Morton, so dominated his region politically that Albert J. Beveridge once classified him as “Deputy President of the United States in active charge of the Ohio Valley.”l In many respects, however, Indiana’s greatest contributions to the preservation of the Union were the 185,803 men who served loyally in the Hoosier State’s 32 batteries and 136 regiments.2 One of those men was Lieutenant John Vestal Hadley, Company B, Seventh Indiana Infantry. His name does not appear in the massive, 128-volume War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Con- federate Armies. In state publications relative to the Civil War Hadley is mentioned only in organizational tables of company officers. Yet this young officer saw action in some of the major battles of the Eastern theater. He received *James I.
