Archive of SID University of Tabriz-Iran Journal of Philosophical Investigations ISSN (print): 2251-7960/ (online): 2423-4419 Vol. 12/ No. 24/ fall 2018 Postmodernism, Philosophy and Literature* Hossein Sabouri** Associate Professor, University of Tabriz, Iran Abstract No special definite definition does exist for postmodernism however it has had an inordinate effect on art, architecture, music, film, literature, philosophy, sociology, communications, fashion, and technology. The main body of this work can be seen as an admiration and reverence for the values and ideals associated with postmodern philosophy as well as postmodern literature. , I have argued that postmodern has mainly influenced philosophy and literature and they are recognized and praised for their multiplicity. Postmodernism might seem exclusive in its work, its emphasis on multiplicity and the decentered subject makes very uncomfortable reading for traditional theorists or philosophers. It rejects western values and beliefs as only small part of the human experience and it rejects such ideas, beliefs, culture and norms of the western. Integrity is fragmented apart into unharmonious narratives which lead to a shattering of identity and an overall breakdown of any idea of the self. Relativism and Self- reflexivity have replaced self-confidence due to the postmodern belief that all representation distorts reality. I have also referred that in a sense; postmodernism is a part of modernism we find the instantaneous coexistence of these two methods of expression and thinking, especially in visual arts and literature. Postmodern Perspectives And Shifting Legal Paradigms: Searching For A Critical Theory Of Juvenile Justice Karen L. Michaelis Department of Educational Leadership & Counseling Psychology, Washington State University, USA Abstract The tension between law’s rationality, objectivity, abstraction and principle, and feminism’s irrationality, subjectivity, contextualisation and personal nature is at the core of attempts by critical legal theorists to define a legal system that seeks justice by giving voice and credibility to heretofore silenced members of groups historically excluded or penalised for their outsider status. Outsider and feminist legal scholars have tackled the difficult issues of exclusion embedded in the law. Outsider legal scholars contend that the sameness/difference debate perpetuates racial stereotypes that justify the law’s impact on members of racial groups by ignoring the impact varying contexts have on giving meaning to an event. Similarly, feminist legal scholars have advocated for a more conscientious legal system that considers community and multiple perspectives as a means of overcoming the bias women experience when they negotiate their way through the judicial system. Both of these perspectives provide a starting point for a less mechanistic, more personal and contextualised approach to juvenile justice. But unlike women and minorities, juveniles will never have the political power to force changes in the juvenile justice system. Therefore, the author proposes that a new critical theory of juvenile justice, based on elements of both feminist and outsider legal theories, is necessary to ensure that juveniles are treated fairly and appropriately based on their unique characteristics coupled with the particular context within which the legal issue to be resolved by the justice system arose. -

MOVEMENT BUILDING THROUGH METANARRATIVE An Integral Ideological Response to Climate Change Jordan Luftig ABSTRACT The State of the World Forum has chosen the AQAL model as its framework and oper- ang system for its 10-year plan to address climate change. This arcle proposes that tackling cli- mate change head-on is imperave yet insufficient, and the Forum’s 2020 vision to green the world economy should be framed in terms of a global integral movement. I use the conceptual lens of ideology as a heurisc device to explore the AQAL model and mine it for ideas that can be converted into levers to grow the integral movement and contribute to the transformaon of society. I present narrave as an essenal lever for movement building and explore it in depth through consideraon of Ken Wilber’s “beyond flatland” metanarrave and the public narrave approach used by Barack Obama’s campaign for President of the United States. KEY WORDS: climate change; ideology; metanarrave; public narrave; social movements In the face of a heating planet, in the midst of collapsing economic systems, in the face of an approaching catastrophe ‘far outside human experience,’ we need more than rhetoric. We need a plan. We need a campaign that brings people together—that mobilizes action in ways that make common sense and offer all sectors of society a common good. We need a vision that provides a more viable basis for society’s rela- tionship with the Earth. The extremity of our crisis makes it paradoxically possible to create a new world. – State of the World Forum1 plan? A campaign that unites people and mobilizes action? A vision for creating a new world? In the A modern age, this has been the stuff of political ideologies. -

Adrian M. Nissen ii Abstract The original contribution of this thesis is an examination of how the concept of metanarrative can be used to illuminate shifts in popular thought in the Information Age. There is disagreement over what Information Age paradigms signify, and whether a metanarrative can exist. The postmodern dismissal of metanarrative requires re-examination in the face of understandings that have accompanied contemporary technological advancements. Information technology will be used in this study to explain the movement in globalised culture towards metanarrative understandings as technology is the most broadly visible indicator of human advancement. Branching out from a core literature of media and cultural theorists and internet researchers, I also employ analogous understandings of such a phenomenon from tangential theory including philosophy, psychology and natural science. Observations have been made of a pattern of increased self-referral over recent decades occurring in various disciplines, indicating shifts in the contextualisation of understandings. Our paradigms are becoming more self- conscious as narratives. As humankind’s ideas and capacity to harness understandings of the world continue to develop, we are increasingly engaging with further levels of self-awareness that provide us with the perspective needed for epistemological shifts. This thesis explores the way in which our advancement brings us closer to a meta-textual awareness. -

Neo-Realism: Post-Postmodern Ethics and Metaphysics Cody Chun1 I. Antirealism In his presentation “Reality as Unamendableness” at the conference “On the Ashes of Post- Modernism: A New Realism,” Maurizio Ferraris demonstrated the implausibility of Friedrich Nietzsche’s constructivist thesis “There are no facts, only interpretations” by suggesting that the statement weakens if “facts” is replaced by “cats.” Doubtful of postmodern philosophy, the conference prefigured the emergence of a new realism in the aftermath of postmodernism. In what follows, I consider post-postmodernism in terms of this neo-realist turn.2 Postmodern thought can be defined by its rejection of an objective reality, or a reality that exists apart from its being thought, in favor of an understanding of reality as the product of texts (Derrida), discourses (Foucault), interpretations (Nietzsche, Vattimo), and social constructs (Berger and Luckmann). Because it rejects the idea that the world exists objectively, postmodern thought is antirealist.3 In Realism and Anti-Realism, Stuart Brock and Edwin Mares define antirealism as the philosophy that denies that anything external to thought exists. -

DESCRIPTORS Constructivism (Learning); *Educational Philosophy; Elementary Secondary Education; Higher Education; *Modernism; Philosophy; Theories IDENTIFIERS *Postmodernism; *Pragmatism ABSTRACT Four ideas characterize postmodernity: skepticism toward grand narratives, critique of the assumption of a unified human subject, problematization of the notion of representation, and a celebration of otherness and difference. Drawbacks to applying postmodern theories to education include: postmodernism is illequipped to deal with morally and politically charged, normative educational issues; its focus on the local and the particular is often too narrow; too strong an emphasis on antirepresentationalism results in the inability to make normative decisions; and exaltation of differences leaves little room for effective communal action and dialogue. In light of these weaknesses, philosophical pragmatism is useful and appealing. Like postmodernists, pragmatists are skeptical of grand theories and static knowledge claims, eschew quests for certainty, view all theories as partial and hypothetical, understand knowledge to be socially constructed, and downplay representationalism. Pragmatists, unlike postmodernists, retain a moral vision, a belief in the ethical significance of both the present and what is to come, and faith in humans' ability to bring about a more desirable future. What distinguishes postmodernism and pragmatism are notions of community, dialogue, and democracy which allow individuals to best live in a world characterized by uncertainty, change, and instability. -
