Solving Problems and Enabling Opportunities with EIDR IDs

Richard Kroon, Engineering Director, EIDR

Challenges in Sports Broadcasting

Sports broadcasting combines all the issues found in: – Asset Management – Traditional Broadcasting • Guide Data, VOD, Audience Measurement, Multiple Language Versions, etc. – Live Events • Variability in Start Times, Weather Delays, Late Changes to Participants, etc. Plus Issues Unique to Sports: – Local Blackouts, Regional Presentations, Multiple Productions of the Same Competition, Regular Reuse of Clips, etc.

Accommodating Content Variability

Register an EIDR ID early and update as the situation demands – This supports EPG population, early B-to-B opportunities including ad exchanges, audience measurement, etc. – EIDR allows flagging “provisional” data – that which may change prior to original presentation – EIDR supports Live Event scheduled start date and time in addition to original program presentation date and time • Helps differentiate similar events (or multiple attempts to play a particular game) • Useful for delayed presentation of a live event (or where the time zone of first presentation differs from the time zone of play) – The Registrant can edit an EIDR record any time the descriptive data change (or if additional data becomes available after initial registration) Populating a Programming Guide

It all starts with the EIDR Content ID – Identifies the presentation of an event, not the event itself. – Start date/time of the event may be recorded in the descriptive metadata Telling the full story requires an EIDR Video Service ID – Identifies the presentation channel (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic, etc.) Content ID + Video Service ID + Start Time – Fully identifies a program for Guide population, viewer discovery, and second screen use cases Facilitating Audience Measurement

Accurate and useful results require correct program identification Common use of an EIDR ID eliminates the need for manual title matching – Reduces cycle times, decreases labor cost, increases accuracy EIDR combined with Ad ID allows detailed ad performance tracking, enhances revenue opportunities, etc. Note: The actual program presented may differ from the one announced – For example, in a whiparound where a more interesting game replaces a dull one mid-presentation – The EIDR Content ID identifies the intended program and audience measurement results will continue to reflect that SportsCenter Other SportsCenter Programs • Tennis: US Open / SportsCente SportsCente SportsCente SportsCenter at the US Open (TNIU) r r r • SportsCenter/ Series SportsCenter (FBSC) (SRMB) (SRAM) (SREB) • SportsCenter Special/ (Program) SportsCenter Special (FBSR) • SportsCenteru: SportsCenteru (COSC) • SportsCenter Special: SportsCenter Special: NFL Face To Face With (FBSR) • SportsCenter Special: 2013 2013 2013 SportsCenter Special Season (Fantasy Draft) (FBSR) • Miscellaneous: (Flight) 2012 2012 2012 SportsCenter Updates (HEAD) :60 Second Updates

EIDR can help bridge gaps in Metadata and align disparate Systems – Improving the Second Screen Experience – Leveraging to create a distributed Shared Experience – Facilitating Cross- and Up-selling for additional revenue opportunities – Allowing more accurate viewer discovery of desired content Help avoid confusion during discovery – USC: University of Southern or University of South Carolina Leverage Alternate IDs to identify specific Sports Teams or Athletes – Show me all “Dodgers” games or “Roger Federer” matches Overcome existing system limitations by bridging to alternate data sources – NCAA systems have a 60 character “Title” limit – “The Masters” have come up with a coded naming convention due to metadata limitations EIDR IDs (or shared Alternate IDs) eliminate manual title matching when combining data and content from multiple sources Beyond Broadcast: NCAA Vault
