Palavras-chave: Os Invisíveis; Histórias em Quadrinhos; História do pensamento; Século XX; ABSTRACT In this thesis we tried to establish lines of understanding of some forms of thought and experiences in the late twentieth century, rethinking them in conjunction with the comic The Invisibles, by Grant Morrison. We begin by addressing the concept of invisibility, from its formal aspect, then think it as a possibility of political resistance to a "control society". Then we come to addressing the concept of time and the experience of new temporalities that open up as a possibility at the end of the century. As a third point, we address matters concerning to the fragmentation of real and the game between real and Simulation which are used as strong elements of postmodernity. Finally, we discus about the identity multiplicity in contemporaneity and the role of technology in new ways of human self-understanding. Thesis Examination Committee: ______________________________________ Advisor Abigail McGowan, Ph.D ______________________________________ Melanie Gustafson, Ph.D ______________________________________ Chairperson Elizabeth Fenton, Ph.D ______________________________________ Dean, Graduate College Domenico Grasso, Ph.D March 22, 2013 Abstract At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC.

  • Post-Anarchism in Grant Morrison's the Invisibles
    4. “A Thought Thinking Itself:” Post-anarchism in Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles Lewis Call* Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles (1994-2000) tells the tale of a diverse band of anarchist freedom fighters. Morrison’s narrative follows the adventures of a cell within a centuries-old revolutionary organization called the Invisible College. The leader of this cell is King Mob, a bald, pierced fetishist, who resembles Morrison more than a little. Three of King Mob’s fellow “Invisibles” present as women: the cross-dressing Brazilian shaman Lord Fanny, a slightly insane time-travelling redhead called Ragged Robin, and an African-American former cop who calls herself Boy. The cell’s newest recruit is Jack Frost, a foul-mouthed working-class punk from Liverpool. Together these Invisible revolutionaries fight against an interdimensional authoritarian conspiracy called the “Outer Church.” This Outer Church works towards a world in which political, economic and religious institutions unite to create a system of total authority. Meanwhile, the Invisible College works towards the opposite end: a left- libertarian world based upon individual freedom, inclusive diversity, and universal access to the means of happiness (including sex, drugs, and magic). The Invisibles can thus be read as an inspirational story of anti-authoritarian rebellion: a strange, beautiful, anarchist fairy tale. Yet, The Invisibles is much more than that. Morrison’s comic is also a post-anarchist cultural artifact. Post-anarchism is a radical form of anarchist theory that first emerged in the 1980s. It draws on twentieth century post-structuralism and post- modernism to extend anarchism’s critical power beyond its traditional targets, capitalism and the state.

  • Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Winter's Edge by Neil Gaiman Journal
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Winter's Edge by Neil Gaiman Journal. Why you should see WINTER'S TALE and other deep thoughts about stuff. Last night, I went to see WINTER'S TALE , Mark Helprin's remarkable novel, made into a film by writer (and now director) Akiva Goldsman. Firstly: I really, really enjoyed it. Akiva took a huge, sprawling novel that spans over a hundred years and took the elements he needed from it to tell the story he had to tell. He made it small, of necessity. It's a fantasy movie, with demons and angels and a flying horse: it contains a noble burglar, a beautiful dying pianist, an absolutely terrifying Russell Crowe, Will Smith stealing scenes as Lucifer, and New York, New York all the way. Secondly, I'd seen a trailer or two before I went to see it. And the trailer is, well it's wrong. It tells you it's going to be a specific kind of movie and it isn't that. It's not really a love story, small l about the love between two attractive people who want to do kissing, although it may be a Love story (capital L about Love, and who and what we love, and why, and what it means for those we love to die). If you like fantasy, or New York, or magical realism, you should see it. You really should. (You should also read the book. And John Crowley's novel Little, Big, which was published about the same time.) The screening audience loved it.
