LONDON EDWAED AKNOLD 1919 IMl rights 'TaserueA] THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO LORD ROBERT CECIL AND THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS PREFACE JOURNALS, in the eyes of their author, usually require an introduction of some kind, which, often, may be conveniently forgotten. The reader is invited to turn to this one if, after persevering through the pages of the diary, he wishes to learn the reason of the abrupt changes and chances of war that befell the writer. They are explained by the fact that his eyesight did not allow him to pass the necessary medical tests. He was able, through some shght skill, to evade these obstacles in the first stage of the war ; later, when England had settled down to routine, they defeated him, as far as the WestfTi Front was concerned. He was fortunately compensated for this disadvantage by a certain knowledge of .the East, that sent him in various capacities to different fronts, often at critical times. It was as an Interpreter that the writer went to France. After a brief imprisonment, it was as an Intelligence Officer that he went to Egypt, the Dardanelles and Mesopotamia.

  • A M D G Beaumont Union Review Autumn 2018
A M D G BEAUMONT UNION REVIEW AUTUMN 2018 During this next quarter we will be marking the Centenary of the Armistice and the First World War that cost so many millions of lives came to an end. OBs were not the great ―movers and shakers‖ of that conflict but what an extraordinary part they played. George MacDonogh at the War Office had written the plan to move the BEF to France, then headed the military intelligence network which regrettably was ignored at crucial times. At the War‘s end he was responsible for the demobilisation of the Army. Mark Sykes redrew the map of the Middle East and with Hugh O‘Beirne brought about the Balfour Declaration. Boy Capel‘s considerable influence with Clemenceau on behalf of the British Government. Reginald de Croy and his Belgian resistance ring that Included the courageous but incompetent Nurse Cavell. Pierce Joyce together with Lawrence changed the tactics for Desert warfare which would impact into WW2. Osmond Prentis HMS Wolverine fired the opening shots of the war against the Ottomans. At a lower level Harry Butters the first American to join the fight and Henry Pearce who was responsible for what is now known as ―The Peace Crater‖. Finally Jack Marriott was one of the official witnesses to the Armistice that was signed at 5.12 am on the 11th November. Overall, our war dead was sadly among the highest of any school. Beaumont did indeed ―punch well above its weight‖. NOTICES THE BU LUNCH As previously announced will take place at the Caledonian Club, Halkin Street, Monday 8th October.

  • Honouring the Armistice
PRESS RELEASE | LONDON FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | 8 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 8 HONOURING THE ARMISTICE CHRISTIE’S TO OFFER EYE WITNESS ACCOUNTS OF THE ARMISTICE FROM BRITISH OFFICER CAPTAIN JACK MARRIOTT December – On 12 December, Christie’s will offer eye witness accounts of the Armistice which ended ‘the war to end all wars’ (estimated - £10,000 - £15,000). The lot includes Captain Jack Marriott’s extraordinarily detailed accounts of the negotiations, alongside two autograph letters, a sheet of blotting paper used at the Armistice and a printed text of the terms of the Armistice itself. Marriott was one of only four British participants, and the notes and mementoes he kept summon up the scene with extraordinary vividness. Christie’s is pleased to offer such significant archival material on the year of the centenary of the end of World War I. The Armistice was negotiated between a remarkably restricted group of participants, comprising seven on the Allied side and six on the German side, including translators. For the three days of negotiations, all were living and working in a pair of French military trains in a clearing of the Front row, from left: Deputy First Sea Lord, Rear-Admiral George Hope; Forest of Compiegne behind French lines. The Allied group was headed General Maxime Wygand, Marshal by Marshal Foch, with Admiral Wemyss the senior British representative Foch’s chief of staff; First Sea Lord, Admiral Rosslyn Wemyss; Ferdinand and head of the naval delegation, to which Marriott was also attached Foch, Marshal of France and Supreme and whose negotiations he recounts in detail.
