United Way of the Greater

ANNUAL REPORT 2017–2018

8 1 0 2 – 1 1918 “Congratulations on 100 years of being kind” - Vince Gill

8 1 0 2 – 1 1918 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

In 2018, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley celebrated its 100th anniversary. From what began in 1918 as the Bethlehem War Chest, today, your United Way has become one of the top-performing and most successful organizations of its kind. That success is due to you and thousands of donors just like you. For a century, you have enabled us to extend kindness to our neighbors in the form of a helping hand, a bed to sleep in, a warm meal and a chance to succeed in school. I’m reminded daily of our community’s generous spirit, but last year, we were truly overwhelmed by your extraordinary support. Under the leadership of Campaign Co-chairs Bill Spence, CEO of PPL, and his wife Denise, you raised an unprecedented $15,050,500 for people of Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon counties. This represented a 25 percent increase over the previous year’s campaign and was the third largest increase out of 1,800 United Ways worldwide. As a result, your United Way made its largest and most significant community investment in our 100-year history. With your support, we’re serving more students, families and seniors than ever: strengthening our Community School network, expanding our support for behavioral and mental health services, adding new investments to our Food Access strategies and working to define what an Age-Friendly Lehigh Valley looks like. As the world celebrates the start of a new year, we embark on a new century of service to our community. We’re thinking of tomorrow each and every day. And we know that with support from people like you, our future is UNITED.

Sincerely, David S. Lewis
