Match background

AS Roma will not be relying on the history books for inspiration before they take on Real Madrid CF in the UEFA Champions League first knockout round. In three previous home games with the nine-time winners of 's most prestigious club competition they have lost every time, on the last two occasions by three-goal margins.

• Luciano Spalletti's team will hope that their maturing knowledge of how to compete at this rarefied level will help them amend that disappointing sequence. Last season was their best campaign for 23 years in Europe's élite club competition, reaching the quarter-finals. Although it all ended emphatically with a 7-1 loss at Manchester United FC, they had impressed in the previous round with a 2-0 aggregate win against , secured through first-half strikes from and Mancini in the second leg in France. The home game had ended goalless.

• Roma are unbeaten in this campaign at home. Starting with a 2-0 win against FC Dynamo Kyiv, they followed that by beating Sporting Clube de Portugal 2-1 and then gained a 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United to seal their place as runners-up in Group F on eleven points, five behind the club. They have not lost in their last eight UEFA Champions League home games and will probably believe they need another home win to give them the best chance of removing Bernd Schuster's team from their path.

• Madrid's three wins away to Roma, all in this competition, came in the 2004/05 group stage through goals from Ronaldo and two from Luís Figo, the 2002/03 first group stage – where Guti was twice on the scoresheet and Raúl González scored the other – and the same stage of the previous campaign. Then, a 2-1 win was secured by goals from Guti and Figo with Francesco Totti scoring Roma's reply. Madrid have also travelled to face Roma's neighbours, S.S. Lazio, on two occasions and returned with 2-2 draws each time. They have therefore yet to lose a game at the Stadio Olimpico.

• That is a foreboding record when set against Roma's struggles against visitors from Spain. Their ten previous matches have produced as many defeats (five) as victories with no draws. In aggregate terms they have won only four of the ten contests. However, they got the better of their last visitors from Spain, beating Valencia CF 1-0 in last season's group stage through Christian Panucci's early header.

• Players in the starting lineup when Madrid were last in Rome to face the Giallorossi were Philippe Mexes, Matteo Ferrari, Simone Perrotta, Alberto Aquilani and Mancini for Roma and Iker Casillas, Míchel Salgado, Raúl González and Guti for Madrid.

• Schuster's team finished level on eleven points with CFP in Group C, taking first place through their superior head-to-head record. They failed to win any of their away fixtures, drawing 2-2 at Lazio and 0-0 in with Olympiacos before going down 3-2 at Werder Bremen. They have not won in their last five UEFA Champions League away games and have managed only one win in their last nine.

• Last season Los Merengues' European campaign ended in the first knockout round in Germany with defeat by FC Bayern München. At one stage they led 3-1 in the home leg with goals from Raúl (2) and Ruud Nistelrooy but struck in the 88th minute and that helped Bayern to turn round the deficit at home and qualify on away goals. Van Nistelrooy scored a late penalty in Munich but it was all to no avail.

• Although Madrid have enjoyed success in Rome, their record against all Italian sides in that country is not so commendable. In a total of 24 fixtures their record reads won four, drawn five, lost 15.

• Madrid have a 75 per cent success rate against Italian foes in finals, beating Juventus in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League showpiece in and ACF Fiorentina and AC Milan as part of their outstanding run of five successive victories at the start of the European Champion Clubs' Cup. They lost out to FC Internazionale Milano in the 1964 final in Vienna.

Head coach AS Roma: Luciano Spalletti Date of birth: 7 March 1959 Nationality: Italian Playing career: AC Entella Chiavari 1914, Spezia Calcio 1906, FC Esperia Viareggio, Empoli FC Coaching career: Empoli FC, UC Sampdoria, Venezia Calcio, Udinese Calcio (twice), Ancona Calcio, AS Roma

A hard-working midfielder in his playing days, Luciano Spalletti has kept the same mentality since starting his coaching career in 1993/94 at his former club Empoli FC. Spalletti enjoyed immediate success with successive promotions; in his first full season, he led the Tuscan club to before taking them to Serie A the following campaign. After a good first term in the top flight, Spalletti left to join UC Sampdoria but was sacked after 28 games of the 1998/99 season. It was the beginning of a difficult period for Spalletti who had brief stays at Venezia Calcio, Udinese Calcio and Ancona Calcio before returning to Udinese in summer 2002.

Spalletti steered Udinese to sixth and seventh-placed finishes before writing his name into the club's history as the first coach to guide Udinese to UEFA Champions League football with a fourth place in 2004/05. That June, however, Spalletti answered a call from AS Roma, who had avoided relegation on the last day of term and had been struggling to fill the gap left by . He signed a two-year contract.

After a difficult opening to 2005/06, Spalletti managed to gain the faith of the Roma squad. Without injured captain Francesco Totti, Roma set a record of consecutive Serie A wins (eleven) and came fifth before the Italian match-fixing tribunal punished Juventus, AC Milan and ACF Fiorentina. That resulted in the Giallorossi moving up to second, earning them an automatic UEFA Champions League place. After a knockout stage berth was secured, Roma handed Spalletti a new contract until 2011 and he rewarded them with second place again in Serie A and Coppa Italia glory.

Real Madrid CF: Bernd Schuster Date of birth: 22 December 1959 Nationality: German Playing career: SV Hammerschmiede Augsburg, 1. FC Augsburg, 1. FC Köln, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid CF, Club Atlético de Madrid, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Club Universidad Nacional AC Coaching career: SC Fortuna Köln, 1. FC Köln, Xerez CD, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, Levante UD, Getafe CF, Real Madrid CF

Bernd Schuster was a charismatic midfielder who came to fame in the West Germany squad that won the 1980 UEFA European Championship when he was just 20. He earned a move to FC Barcelona, where he won the Primera División and the Copa del Rey as well as the 1982 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and played in the 1986 European Champion Clubs' Cup final. 'The Blond Angel' then joined arch-rivals Real Madrid CF, winning two more league titles before switching across the city to help Atlético to two cup triumphs. His international career ended in 1984 after falling out with coach Jupp Derwall.

Following spells back in Germany and in Mexico, Schuster retired as a player in 1997 and was appointed coach at 2. side SC Fortuna Köln. He then joined former club 1. FC Köln, also in the second division, but left in 2000. His first coaching spell in Spain followed with Xerez CF, coming as close to promotion as the club ever had, but in his subsequent reigns at FC Shakhtar Donetsk and Levante UD, promising starts petered out.

In June 2005 he was appointed at Getafe CF, the Madrid side having avoided relegation on their Primera División debut the season before. But after a couple of months under Schuster they were top of the league and they finished ninth, repeating the feat last season, as well as reaching their first Copa del Rey final and earning a UEFA Cup place. Schuster, however, was tempted away to join Madrid, where president Ramón Calderón had long been an admirer.

Whether performing a classical piano piece for an appreciative audience or refereeing football's superstars in front of a packed crowd, Herbert Fandel keeps cool and delivers. Stage fright is out of the question. The German, who took charge of Sevilla FC's 4-0 UEFA Cup final defeat of Middlesbrough FC in May 2006 a year before orchestrating the 2007 UEFA Champions League showpiece when AC Milan beat Liverpool FC 2-1 in Athens, is used to the big occasion, both as a full-time pianist with his own highly successful music school and as one of Europe's leading referees.

Fandel, a father of two who lives in Kyllburg, close to the Luxembourg border, became the first German to take charge of a one-off UEFA Cup final in . Having started his refereeing career in 1989, he joined the élite band of Bundesliga officials in 1996 and earned his FIFA badge two years later. His break on the international stage came at the UEFA European Under-16 Championship in 1998 before he travelled to the 1999 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup in South Africa. Appointments at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and Sydney Olympics followed in 2000 ahead of the step up to FIFA World Cup qualifying in 2002. Fandel also did the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup on home soil before taking charge of his second German Cup final in three campaigns, with FC Bayern München lifting the 2006 trophy after a 1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt. He was also a UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying regular.

UEFA information

Anti-social behaviour General Secretary David Taylor has highlighted UEFA's plans to combat fan misconduct in the near future, telling uefa.com: "UEFA have been very strong in terms of their messages, the actions they are taking, and sanctioning activities which breach fundamental human rights. And we've seen situations where, in terms of hooliganism last year, a club was ejected from one of our major competitions.

"Now we will not hesitate to take such action if the circumstances require, but each case must be treated on its merits. There are greater difficulties, of course, with incidents which happen outside football stadiums, further away from football grounds. This is where the police and civic authorities must work with football to deal with these matters. They are not primarily the responsibility of football – it's a societal problem. UEFA will deal with matters within our capability and within our regulatory powers, but we must work with the civic authorities to have a stronger joint action against these things which have negative influences on our sport."

Munich tribute Mr Taylor also spoke of the "unique bond" between Manchester United FC and European football's governing body on the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster. The tragedy on 6 February 1958 cost 23 people – including eight United players – their lives as the team returned from a European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-final against FK Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade.

"On behalf of UEFA, the UEFA President , and the entire European football family, I am honoured to be here with you today to pay our respects to the 23 victims of the Munich air disaster," said Mr Taylor at the memorial service in Manchester. "Manchester United are one of the great clubs in Europe. They have been pioneers in many areas. The tragedy of the Munich air disaster has, however, created a special bond between the club and the organisers of European football, a bond which remains strong to this day."

Referees' course Respect and protection will be the watchwords for UEFA's leading referees when the European club competitions resume. That was the clear message from the 16th UEFA Advanced Course for Elite and Premier Referees in Limassol, Cyprus, between 5 and 8 February. The need for strict action to be taken to protect players from unfair play – including dangerous tackles and holding in the penalty area – and also to protect the image of the game, particularly in scenes of player confrontation, was also emphasised. Equally, the importance of maintaining respect was writ large, with match officials told not to hesitate over sanctioning players who undermine their authority.

During a discussion session in Limassol, the referees unanimously declared themselves in favour of introducing goalline technology to assist them in eliminating any element of doubt in cases where it is uncertain whether or not the ball has crossed the line. However, the referees were opposed both to the use of video technology elsewhere on the pitch and to the presence of a monitor to aid the fourth official at pitch-side.

Trophy tour Football fans in Brazil are being given a unique opportunity to see the UEFA Champions League trophy as European football's most coveted club prize has begun a two-month tour of four Latin American countries. A ceremony in Sao Paulo on Friday launched the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour – sponsored by Heineken and stopping in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico. Former Brazil international , a FIFA World Cup winner in 1994, is the Trophy Tour ambassador in Sao Paulo.

Key dates The 2007/08 UEFA Champions League first knockout round is played over two legs on 19/20 February and 4/5 March, although FC Internazionale Milano's second leg against Liverpool FC will take place on 11 March. The draw for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be staged on 14 March. The last eight will be played on 1/2 and 8/9 April before the semi-finals on 22/23 and 29/30 April. The UEFA Champions League final will be held in Moscow on 21 May, before UEFA EURO 2008™ kicks off in Austria and Switzerland on 7 June.

Competition facts

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have come back from a first-leg deficit to go through to the next stage on 20 occasions, including both 2006/07 semi-final victors. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 when they fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home and progress to the semi-finals.

• Fifteen ties, including three in the 2006/07 season's first knockout round, have been decided on the away goals rule, including five where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• Manchester United FC hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 4-0 home success against FC in the 1996/97 quarter-finals, eventually going through by that margin after a goalless return.

• Only six ties have gone to penalties. Four of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005. The first two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. The second was Liverpool's 4-1 semi-final win on penalties on 1 May 2007 against Chelsea after a 1-1 aggregate draw.

• In all, 12 ties have required extra time, including, in 2006/07, AC Milan's meeting with Celtic FC in the first knockout round and Liverpool's semi-final triumph against Chelsea. Along with the six ties mentioned above, four quarter-final and two first knockout round encounters have also needed an additional 30 minutes in an attempt to determine a winner.

• Real Madrid CF have extended their record for knockout stage qualification in successive seasons. The 2006/07 campaign was the tenth straight season since 1997/98 that they made it beyond the group stage, moving them ahead of United, who appeared nine times in a row between 1996/97 and 2004/05, and the Spanish side have extended that run to eleven successive campaigns this season. Overall, they have now played in the knockout stage 12 times, one more than United and two more than FC Bayern München.

• Had FC Bayern München beaten AC Milan in the 2006/07 last eight, it would have meant the first time the UEFA Champions League final four had no representation from either the Primera División or Serie A.

• The last European Champion Clubs' Cup season that featured not one semi-finalist from either Spain or Italy, or English for that matter, was the 1990/91 campaign.

• The 2004/05 first knockout round encounter between Lyon and Werder Bremen featured more goals (12) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie – as Lyon defeated Bremen 10-2.

• United's 7-1 victory against AS Roma in the 2006/07 campaign is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match. The previous best were Barcelona's 5-1 second-leg defeat after extra time of Chelsea (1999/00), RC Deportivo La Coruña's 4-0 return victory against AC Milan (2003/04) and United's 4-0 first-leg success against Porto (1996/97).

• Roma-United featured eleven goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record shared by Chelsea's 6-5 aggregate victory against Bayern in 2004/05 and Madrid's success by the same margin against United in 2002/03.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Eight have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Milan's narrow victory against Celtic after extra time in the 2006/07 first knockout round.

is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Madrid 1998 and Milan 2003 and 2007). Had Bayern gone all the way last season, Ottmar Hitzfeld would have joined Liverpool FC's Bob Paisley – 1977, 1978 and 1981 – as the only coach to win three times, having won with BV Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and Bayern in 2001.

• Hitzfeld and Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) are the only coaches to win with two clubs.

• If Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, Olympiacos CFP, Fenerbahçe SK or AS Roma go all the way this season, it would be the first European Cup success for , Athens, Istanbul or Rome. Only five capital cities have been successful in this way: Madrid (Real Madrid CF), Belgrade (FK Crvena Zvezda), Bucharest (FC Steaua Bucureşti), Amsterdam (AFC Ajax) and Lisbon (SL Benfica).

• Moscow was awarded the 2008 UEFA Champions League final after a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia in October 2006. The Luzhniki Stadium, formerly known as the Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium, was inaugurated in 1956. Owned by FC Torpedo Moskva, it is the biggest sports arena in Russia with 84,745 covered seats. The capacity reached 103,000 when the Luzhniki sports complex staged the in 1980, but was reduced following renovation work between 1995 and 1997. It is one of few major European stadiums to use an artificial pitch, having installed the UEFA-approved FieldTurf surface in 2002 to withstand the effects of the freezing winters, although the final will be played on a new natural grass pitch. Luzhniki held the 1999 UEFA Cup final between Parma FC and Olympique de Marseille, and also hosted the first UEFA Champions League match on artificial turf, between FC Spartak Moskva and Sporting Clube de Portugal, in September 2006.

Overall, Madrid have played in 12 European Cup finals, the most of any club, and won nine of them. They lost in 1961/62, 1963/64 and 1980/81.

• Although they sat out the first three editions, Madrid have since taken part on 12 occasions and only FC Porto and Manchester United FC (13) have a better record. They last missed out in the 1996/97 campaign, meaning this is their eleventh in a row. Only United (12) have appeared in more consecutive editions.

UEFA club competition honours • European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1955/56, 1956/57, 1957/58, 1958/59, 1959/60, 1965/66, 1997/98, 1999/00, 2001/02 • UEFA Cup: 1984/85, 1985/86 • UEFA Super Cup: 2002 • European/South American Cup: 1960, 1998, 2002

European record: Madrid dominated Group E along with Olympique Lyonnais but a draw and a defeat against their French rivals meant a second-placed finish ahead of FC Steaua Bucureşti and FC Dynamo Kyiv. Their tenth successive appearance in the knockout stages ended in the last 16 as FC Bayern München edged through on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate draw.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Away goals: If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If, during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double. If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks from the penalty mark determine which club qualifies for the next stage.

• Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions, a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2007/08, at least six places will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist – involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2006/07, the number of locally-trained players required began at four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained. A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Champions League matches from the start of the first knockout round, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Champions League this season.

• Financial information: UEFA estimate the gross income for the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League is €824.5m. Under competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m, will go to the 32 teams taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition.
