Yeats and the Dublin Hermetic Society by Professor Grevel Lindop [Image: William Butler Yeats, by John Butler Yeats, 1900] 1 A SECRET PHILOSOPHY: W.B. YEATS AND THE DUBLIN HERMETIC SOCIETY (i) On June 16th 1885 a group of young men met in a modest upper room in York Street, near the centre of Dublin. They would call themselves the Dublin Hermetic Society, and they intended to explore ‘a philosophy which has until lately been kept entirely secret, or at most revealed only in symbolism’.1 The group had been called together by the young poet William Butler Yeats and his friend Charles Johnston. It was Yeats who gave the opening address. This was an important time in his life: three days earlier, he had celebrated his twentieth birthday; and his first published poems had appeared in the Dublin University Review just three months before that. We don’t know exactly what he said in those inaugural remarks, but later he recalled: I had, when we first made our Society, proposed for our consideration that whatever the great poets had affirmed in their finest moments was the nearest we could come to an authoritative religion, and that their mythology, their spirits of water and wind, were but literal truth.2 So poetry was involved from the start, with Yeats convinced (like Blake before him) that poets are the true prophets. He was also proposing the ‘literal’ (not merely metaphorical) existence of elemental spirits – that there are modes of existence, and living beings, inaccessible to our ordinary senses.

  • Theosophy and the Origins of the Indian National Congress
THEOSOPHY AND THE ORIGINS OF THE INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS By Mark Bevir Department of Political Science University of California, Berkeley Berkeley CA 94720 USA [E-mail: [email protected]] ABSTRACT A study of the role of theosophy in the formation of the Indian National Congress enhances our understanding of the relationship between neo-Hinduism and political nationalism. Theosophy, and neo-Hinduism more generally, provided western-educated Hindus with a discourse within which to develop their political aspirations in a way that met western notions of legitimacy. It gave them confidence in themselves, experience of organisation, and clear intellectual commitments, and it brought them together with liberal Britons within an all-India framework. It provided the background against which A. O. Hume worked with younger nationalists to found the Congress. KEYWORDS: Blavatsky, Hinduism, A. O. • THE CHELA and the PATH: Keys to Soul Mastery in the Aquarian Age by El Morya
I direct this series to those moving in the wind of the Aquarian cycle. To those who would move into the new dispensation yet know not the way to go I say, there is a Path. Step by step it has been carved by the initiates of the sacred fire. Over thousands of years the barefooted devotees have worn a trail over the rocks. The way is known of us. It can also be known by you. In support of Saint Germain, Master of the Aquarian Age, exponent of the flame of freedom to mankind, I place the jewel of my crown upon the altar of the Great White Brotherhood, that those who have lost the way may find it again. The path to our abode is steep. The way is fraught with unknown dangers, yet the peaks of pride are more jagged than the uncharted heights. I come to clear the way for the chelas of God’s will—those who would become chelas of the ascended masters. Whether Christian or Jew, Moslem or Zen Bud- dhist, or none of these, know, O seeker after higher reality, that the path of initiation can be trod wherever you are. But you must take the first step. My respon- sibility is to guide and guard: yours is to follow. With the full faculties of mind and heart and soul, you chart the course of your life. • New Age and Neopagan Religions in America
CHAPTER SEVEN The Age of Aquarius Although the idea of a New Age was popularized by Alice Bailey in the early twentieth century, the term had been around at least since the American Rev- olution before it was used self-consciously by Theosophists like her who be- lieved a “master” would come to enlighten humanity and usher us into a new age. The concept picked up relevance as the s counterculture looked to- ward the Age of Aquarius as a utopian future of peace and equality. Move- ments aimed at social and personal transformation that emerged or were given new meaning in the s continue to shape New Age and Neopagan religions. Ideas about the expected new era vary among Neopagans and New Agers, just as they ranged in the s from social revolution to com- munal escape from society. But most agree that it will include a changed dy- namic between men and women, healthy diet, holistic healing practices, and peacefulness. Along with and related to holistic healing and feminist restructuring, en- vironmentalist concerns are seen as key in bringing about the transformation of society. Many New Agers and Neopagans believe that an ecologically vi- able relationship to the natural world will characterize the future age, when humans will live more harmoniously on earth. Some also believe the earth it- self, a living being that has been ill used by humanity, will bring about cata- clysmic changes, while others expect a gradual dawning of enlightened con- sciousness among large numbers of people to usher in the New Age. Goddess religion will emerge from a “Great Purification,” claim some ob- servers, borrowing a phrase from Hopi prophecy: “Look at the freak weather phenomena all around us .

  • 1 Learning to See Reality As It Is
1 LEARNING TO SEE REALITY AS IT IS “To see is to be free” (Sri Bhagavan) INTRODUCTION The second seed group of the New Group of World Servers (NGWS) is that of the Trained Observers. They have been given the task of achieving freedom from the world illusion and glamour through “right observation” and “right direction” of the light of the soul. With this liberation of the illusion and glamour of the astral plane this group will inaugurate the era of light. This group has one of the most difficult tasks, which is seeing and teaching others to see reality as it is, and therefore seeing through the illusion of the all pervading glamour which seems very real for humanity in its current state of consciousness. For this the esoteric sense has to be developed, which means the possession of a constant inner contact with the soul. To cultivate this esoteric sense, and to achieve the needed detachment from form, regular meditation is needed, by which the intuition will be developed. Developing the intuition and bringing it into activity will eventually lead to solutions of many problems humanity is faced with today. In this paper I will go into the problem of humanity of being stuck in the material reality perceived by the lower personality. And I will elaborate on the contribution of the Trained Observers in solving this problem by learning humanity to see reality as it is by developing the esoteric sense and the intuition through meditation. THE GLAMOUR OF MATERIALITY In another paper ‘Dissipation of the Glamour of Materiality’ I wrote that one of the most pervading and enveloping glamours for humanity is the glamour of materiality.

  • Painting the Masters. the Mystery of Hermann Schmiechen
Painting the Masters The Mystery of Hermann Schmiechen Massimo Introvigne (UPS, Torino, Italy) Besançon’s Forbidden Image One of the first books where sociology of religion met history of art was L’image interdite. Une histoire intellectuelle de l’iconoclasme, published by French social historian Alain Besançon in 1994 Iconoclasm vs Iconodulism The controversial book argued that Western art history is defined by opposition between iconoclasm (i.e the idea that the sacred should not be represented visually) and iconodulism (i.e support for sacred images) Although the terminology dates back to the Byzantine iconoclastic riots of the 8th century (right), modern Western iconoclasm originated with John Calvin (1509-1564) and became culturally dominant after the Enlightenment Iconoclasm: not against art, but against an art representing God or divine spirits Besançon’s definition of iconoclasm is not identical with some dictionary definitions of the same word. For him, iconoclasm is not against art and may even promote it. It only excludes from the field of art the representation of God and divine spirits or beings Image of Byzantine Emperor Leo III (685-741) on a coin: Leo, a leading iconoclast, was obviously not against representing himself Abstract Art as Iconoclasm Besançon* also argued that: 1. Iconoclasm is a distinctive trait of modernity, and abstract art is its most mature fruit 2. Symbolism, at first sight anti-iconoclastic, by substituting the Christian foundations of sacred art with a very different esoteric spirituality, in fact prepared the way for abstract iconoclasm 3. Several abstract painters, including Piet Mondrian (1872- 1944) passed at one stage through symbolism (Evolution, 1910-1911, left) * … with whom I do not necessarily agree Besançon and Theosophy Besançon claimed to be among the first social historians to devote serious attentions to Madame Blavatsky (1831-1891) and other Theosophical classics.

  • The Divine Plan
Gordon Herbert, September 2015 The Divine Plan There is a divine plan for our planet and for the role of humanity on it. Its source is in the divine councils of the universe, and it is implemented by the highest three kingdoms of Life on our planet.1 We humans have a role to play in cooperating with this plan to help bring about the ascension of the whole. Divine Purpose The ultimate purpose for humanity is unknown, as we are simply conscious cells within larger cosmic wholes. We would need to know the divine purpose of these many integrated “gods”, and hence of God Itself. However, masters and seers have suggested that the immediate purpose of our Planetary Logos is to create a planetary synthesis of all seven kingdoms of Life, with fully integrated systems, in order to bring about a tremendous solar revelation.2 This is the planetary equivalent of the integrated personality uniting with soul, freed of material attachments, and then uniting further with divine Will. In both human and planet this level of attainment is the fourth initiation of crucifixion and resurrection, marking the ascension out of one kingdom into the next, higher kingdom of Life.3 Cosmic beings cooperating with the will of the Planetary Logos manifest this process. They set the parameters of the Earth system to guide all aspects of planetary life, including the growth of human free will. Our will develops within the limits of their parameters, guided by karma, reincarnation and grace. It eventually leads, as a result of this learning, to a personal decision to unite with the will and purpose of the Planetary Logos, the Father, to be as one.

  • Morya, One of the "Masters of the Ancient Wisdom" Spoken of in Modern Theosophy and in the Ascended Master Teachings I
Morya, one of the "Masters of the Ancient Wisdom" spoken of in modern Theosophy and in the Ascended Master Teachings is considered one of the "Ascended Masters." He is also known as the "Chohan of the First Ray". Morya first became known to the modern world when H. P. Blavatsky declared that he and Kkuthumi were her guides in establishing the Theosophical Society. Seven Rays Blavatsky wrote that Masters Morya and Koot Hoomi belonged to a group of highly developed humans known as the Great White Brotherhood. Although Master Morya's personality has been depicted in some detail by various theosophical authors, critics point out that there is little evidence that Blavatsky's Masters, including Morya, ever existed. There being a dearth of material evidence to prove anything with certainty, this article focuses on presenting the narratives about Morya given by various believers in his existence, beginning from the time of his alleged contacts with 19th-century theosophists. Morya Khan is known in many New Age religions as the Ascended Master of the Blue Ray or First Ray. He is well known as the 'Master M' who worked with the Kuthumi in the late nineteenth century to establish the Theosophical Society and to spread the knowledge of higher truths to a wider circle among mankind. After his alleged ascension in the late 1800s, he continued working for this same purpose. He is believed to have ascended in 1898. http://www.crystalinks.com/morya.html אל מוריה الموريا Ελ Μόρυα 天使のエル·モリヤ http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/chain_of_flowers723/56856858.html Morya (Theosophy) For other uses, see Morya.

  • Blavatsky the Satanist: Luciferianism in Theosophy, and Its Feminist Implications
Blavatsky the Satanist: Luciferianism in Theosophy, and its Feminist Implications PER FAXNELD Stockholm University Abstract H. P. Blavatsky’s influential The Secret Doctrine (1888), one of the foundation texts of Theosophy, contains chapters propagating an unembarrassed Satanism. Theosophical sympathy for the Devil also extended to the name of their journal Lucifer, and discussions conducted in it. To Blavatsky, Satan is a cultural hero akin to Pro- metheus. According to her reinterpretation of the Christian myth of the Fall in Genesis 3, Satan in the shape of the serpent brings gnosis and liberates mankind. The present article situates these ideas in a wider nineteenth-century context, where some poets and socialist thinkers held similar ideas and a counter-hegemonic reading of the Fall had far-reaching feminist implications. Additionally, influences on Blavatsky from French occultism and research on Gnosticism are discussed, and the instrumental value of Satanist shock tactics is con- sidered. The article concludes that esoteric ideas cannot be viewed in isolation from politics and the world at large. Rather, they should be analyzed both as part of a religious cosmology and as having strategic polemical and didactic functions related to political debates, or, at the very least, carrying potential entailments for the latter. Keywords: Theosophy, Blavatsky, Satanism, Feminism, Socialism, Ro- manticism. In September 1875, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831–1891) co-founded the Theosophical society in New York City. Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832–1907), lawyer and journalist, was elected its first president. Blavatsky, however, became the chief ideologist, drawing authority from the com- munications concerning esoteric matters she claimed to receive from the mysterious ‘Mahatmas’ (or ‘Masters’).

This article examines the details of the Anthroposophical theory of cosmic and individual redemption and draws out the characteristic assumptions about racial and ethnic difference that underlie it. Particular attention is given to textual sources unavailable in English, which reveal the specific features of Steiner’s account of “race evolution” and “soul evolution.” Placing Steiner’s worldview in its historical and ideological context, the article highlights the contours of racial thinking within a prominent alternative spiritual movement and delineates the central role of a racially configured conception of evolution within Anthroposophy past and present.

Blavatsky in the s, the idea of the Masters of the Ancient Wisdom or Mahatmas was adopted by people who at some point had had a connection with the Theosophical movement, such as Alice Bailey , Helena Roerich , and Manly P. Later on many other organizations, especially in the United States, developed the concept of Ascended Masters, which departs from the theosophical one in several aspects. Adherents of the Ascended Master Teachings believe that this wisdom was partially released by the Theosophical Society beginning in , by C. The term Ascended Master was first introduced in by Guy Ballard with the publication of Unveiled Mysteries , a book which he said was dictated to him by the Ascended Master: St. It is believed that Ascended Masters are individuals who were formerly embodied on the Earth and learned the lessons of life during their incarnations. It is further claimed by various groups and teachers that the Ascended Masters serve as the teachers of mankind from the realms of spirit , and that all people will eventually attain their Ascension and move forward in spiritual evolution beyond this planet. According to these teachings, they remain attentive to the spiritual needs of humanity and act to inspire and motivate its spiritual growth.
