A Publication of Marymount Manhattan College Issue No. 6 - Fall 2010 Artfusion News Artfusion News A publication of Marymount Manhattan College Issue No. 6 - Fall 2010 Artfusion News Artfusion News serves as an open forum to learn about, discuss, advocate, and enjoy cultural activities in and around New York. The magazine, founded in Spring 2008, serves as a public voice for students of all majors who are interested in exploring and sharing their ideas on various forms of cultural expression, including art, music, dance, theater, and film. Artfusion News contains works by practicing visual and performing artists, and interviews with Marymount students, alumni, and professors who are working in art-related fields. We also count on students to keep us posted on cultural activities abroad. As an interdisciplinary organization, we invite students to write articles and editorials on intersections among the arts, sciences, humanities, business, and social sciences. We hope, ultimately, to enrich the cultural awareness of all Marymount students by investigating and celebrating the limitless and unparalleled artistic and educational resources available to us through our distinct location—the heart of a great cultural capital—and beyond. As the arts have long been enriched by the diversity of its creators, this edition of Artfusion News is dedicated to Marymount’s Gay-Straight National Alliance Project (G-SNAP). G-SNAP is a student organization that strives, through sponsored events and discussions, to build awareness about Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ), and other diverse cultures. Greater awareness of LGBTQ issues and organizations such as G-SNAP and the “It Gets Better” Project provide comfort for those who feel alienated and reiterate the importance of combating intolerance in all of its forms. While the combined strength of the city’s creative sector may not trump the impact of the financial services sector, it isn’t far off. The city’s creative economy consists of 12,066 businesses and non- profits (5.8 percent of all employers in the five bor- oughs) and provides employment to 309,142 peo- ple (8.1 percent of all city workers). In recent years, the sector has added jobs at a considerably faster rate than the overall city economy: between 1998 and 2002, employment in New York’s creative core grew by 13.1 percent (adding 32,000 jobs) while the city’s overall job totals increased by 6.5 percent during this period. Photo: Joan Marcus Theater Review Stripped down to its bare musical essentials, excellent revival of La Cage Aux Folles remains relevant & entertaining La Cage Aux Folles Book by Harvey Fierstein Music and lyrics by Jerry Herman Directed by Terry Johnson Longacre Theatre 220 West 48th Street (212-239-6200), www.LaCage.com By David NouNou This scaled-down version of La Cage Aux Folles is a rarity indeed: a musical revival that not only works, but is still relevant in modern-day America .The original version that opened in 1983 was a grand-scale musical, with all the trimmings of a wonderful Jerry Herman opus, replete with a huge cast, elaborate sets, and magnificent costumes. A dazzler for the eyes and ears, it needed all the appeal and acceptability for a conservative Reagan-era nation. The 2004 version was mounted on a grand scale, but lacked the heart that this musical so desperately needs. This version captures the heart and soul of the musical without too much razzle-dazzle and glamour. It has just enough to capture the essence of the illusion. The book by Harvey Fierstein, based on the Jean Poiret play (made into a brilliant French movie in 1979), has the sensibilities of an American musical. Although it's still set on the French Riviera, it is the first musical that dealt with gay issues and what constitutes a family. Looking at it now, it really was a groundbreaking show.

    ADF 's 2021 Season Dedicated to Cynthia Wyse We are thrilled to dedicate the 2021 ADF Season to Cynthia Wyse, our devoted Director of Finance & Administration. For the past 33 summers, Cynthia’s stewardship of ADF’s fiscal well-being and untiring work to support the festival’s programs have been extraordinary. An Ohio native who committed much of her life’s work toward an art form that was at first foreign to her, she became one of ADF’s biggest champions. Beyond the oversight of financial and administrative matters, Cynthia has led ADF’s internship program and provided mentorship to countless finance interns. She has made sure that artists, faculty, musicians, and staff were always paid and in the midst of it all was a nurturer to many. Frequent cheese balls and plentiful snacks provided by her have kept the staff nourished and re-energized during the most challenging days. We are going to miss Cynthia when she retires at the end of this calendar year, but we have so much gratitude for all that she has given to ADF. We wish her much happiness as she choreographs the next chapter in her life! To honor Cynthia’s legacy, we are launching a campaign to establish the Wyse Finance Internship Fund. The goal is to raise at least $25k over the next four months. ADF is contributing $12.5k to kick things off! Interest from the endowed gift will cover the annual stipend for our finance intern. We hope you will help us celebrate Cynthia and make a contribution that will have a lasting effect on nurturing and training future performing arts administrators.

    CAST BIOS TOM RILEY (Leonardo da Vinci) Tom has been seen in a variety of TV roles, recently portraying Dr. Laurence Shepherd opposite James Nesbitt and Sarah Parish in ITV1’s critically acclaimed six-part medical drama series “Monroe.” Tom has completed filming the highly anticipated second season which premiered autumn 2012. In 2010, Tom played the role of Gavin Sorensen in the ITV thriller “Bouquet of Barbed Wire,” and was also cast in the role of Mr. Wickham in the ITV four-part series “Lost in Austen,” alongside Hugh Bonneville and Gemma Arterton. Other television appearances include his roles in Agatha Christie’s “Poirot: Appointment with Death” as Raymond Boynton, as Philip Horton in “Inspector Lewis: And the Moonbeams Kiss the Sea” and as Dr. James Walton in an episode of the BBC series “Casualty 1906,” a role that he later reprised in “Casualty 1907.” Among his film credits, Tom played the leading roles of Freddie Butler in the Irish film Happy Ever Afters, and the role of Joe Clarke in Stephen Surjik’s British Comedy, I Want Candy. Tom has also been seen as Romeo in St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold alongside Colin Firth and Rupert Everett and as the lead role in Santiago Amigorena’s A Few Days in September. Tom’s significant theater experiences originate from numerous productions at the Royal Court Theatre, including “Paradise Regained,” “The Vertical Hour,” “Posh,” “Censorship,” “Victory,” “The Entertainer” and “The Woman Before.” Tom has also appeared on stage in the Donmar Warehouse theatre’s production of “A House Not Meant to Stand” and in the Riverside Studios’ 2010 production of “Hurts Given and Received” by Howard Barker, for which Tom received outstanding reviews and a nomination for best performance in the new Off West End Theatre Awards.
