Gordon was a true Dorset man, born on a farm near Dorchester. From a very early age, he was brought up to mend and make do, never throw anything away, it will be useful one day...and this was his moto every day of his life.... It didn‟t matter if it was a piece of baler twine or an engine... As a teenager during WW2 he worked for the “War Ag" driving a D4 caterpillar, he ploughed soooo many fields and hills around the local area. He married in 1950 and moved to Wiltshire as a tractor driver...working his way up to be farm manager until 1971. During his time here, his “collection" started to grow... beginning small enough. His daughters remember, that when they were young if anyone needed anything at all, Gordon would be the go to guy.....always someone coming to borrow tools or asking him to help mend items. During the 1970's Gordon became a manager of an oil depot...he was more interested in the mechanic‟s and working on the lorries than office work....metal and oily parts was more fun than paper work. On retirement Gordon and Joyce moved back from Wiltshire in the early 90's... this is where Gordons passion began again...he had tracked down a D4 Caterpillar and shipped it from Ireland...yes a very big toy and now he had time to play with it, remembering his teenage years, loving it... So many barns and sheds to fill.......and my goodness he did....... Gordon was well known at all the local sales with his friends.... I am sure the Auctioneers were thrilled to see Gordon as they knew he would always “need” something.......and why buy 1 when you could buy 20 !!!!!!! And this is why we are here today to sell Gordon's beloved treasures. We hope you will enjoy and put to good use this unique collection, from a very special and one of a kind, a Dorset man through and though. Auctioneers Notes Southern Counties Auctioneers are honoured to have been asked to disperse „The Gordon Cleall Collection‟. We all have fond memories of seeing him at many sales over a wide area during the past 30 years or so. As you will see from the catalogue there is a very wide selection of lots varying in size from nuts and bolts up to a full size Caterpillar. With so many lots to offer we have reluctantly had to split the sale into two parts to get them all sold in one day! We have described the lots to the best of our knowledge but even so there may be one or two errors – apologies if there are. The Auctioneers would like to thank the family for preparing the sale within the time scale allowed and presenting the lots for sale so well. Directions Heathfield Farm is situated just off and to the east of the A37 Yeovil to Dorchester trunk road some 3 miles from Yeovil. The postcode of BA22 9RQ is accurate to around 100 yards of the sale site for those using Satellite Navigation. The Auctioneers temporary direction signs will be posted on the sale morning in the usual way. Please park tidily and with consideration for others, thank you. Viewing The goods for sale may be viewed on the day before the sale between 10am & 4pm or on sale morning from 8.30 am onwards. • Dedicattons of Tfte Cfjutcbcs of ©Ometsetsftire. “L
DeDicattons of tfte Cfjutcbcs of ©ometsetsftire. BY THE KEY. E. H. BATES, M.A HE late Mr. W illiam Long contributed to the seventeenth “L volume of the Proceedings in 1871 a classified list of the Church Dedications given by Ecton in his Thesaurus Rerum Ecclesiasticarum, 1742. As Editor of the Bath and Wells Diocesan Kalendar my attention has been frequently drawn, from my own knowledge as well as by numerous correspon- dents, to the many errors and gaps in that list. It became plainly necessary to go behind the Thesaurus to the original sources of information. And here I may be allowed to repro- duce what I have already stated in the preface to the Kalendar for 1905. It should be clearly understood that there is no authoritative list in existence. Among the Public Becords are two works known as Pope Nicholas’ Taxatio of 1291, and the Valor Ec- clesiasticus of 27 Henry VIII (1536), containing the names of all parishes in England and Wales. These were primarily drawn up to ascertain the value of the benefices, and only in- cidentally, as in the case of towms with many churches, are the dedications added. The latter work, to which the title of V^ahr Ecclesiasticus or Liber Regis is generally given, was first printed in 1711 by J ohn Ecton. His preface contains a very interesting account of the early work of the Queen Anne’s Bounty Fund, of which he was Receiver, and of the serious state of affairs in the large towns which led to its foundation.

East Coker Society Newsletter JANUARY 2010 Free Issue No 137 Happy New Year to you all! Chair: John Sugg 863435 [email protected] Newsletter Editor: Lesley Lindsay 862868 [email protected] Secretary: Sarah Owen 862218 Treasurer: Keith Helliar 863700 East Coker Society News MAKE THIS YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION! Distribution of the newsletter by e-mail At the Society's recent AGM the current extremely low number of residents who opt to receive the Newsletter by this means was discussed and the Committee felt it opportune to ask again for those villagers with computers to advise Lesley Lindsay of their e-mail address in order that the considerable cost of printing hard copies can be substantially reduced. It will also ease the occasional difficulties over manual distribution which arise through illness and holidays etc. We have roughly 800 households in the village yet only 158 have taken up the e-mail option. In asking for villagers co-operation it is stressed that:- a) Individuals' e-mail addresses are secure and will not be disclosed to any other party. b) All villagers who wish to continue to receive hard copies of the Newsletter can continue to enjoy this option. c) Please remember many e-mail recipients do not print the whole document but only the pages that interest them, particularly the all important calendar of events. THE EAST COKER BAG The new East Coker Bag is a 'must-have' item if you live in East Coker! The cotton shopper is available with either long or short handles, and has the East Coker Cockerel on one side.
