Dear Residents and Friends, It brings me much joy to once again be able to update all our residents on the latest changes and developments taking place in our fair and beloved Chua Chu Kang Town. Our town is constantly evolving to cater to the demands of our diverse community who have made Chua Chu Kang their home. Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) We are fortunate this year to see more precincts being made eligible for the NRP; a fully government funded programme aimed at refreshing our more matured estates, to bring them up to par with the newer HDB developments. Three precincts were previously selected for the NRP – Teck Whye Lane precinct (Chua Chu Kang division), Jurong West St 81 precinct (Nanyang division) and Jurong West Ave 5 and St 71/72 precinct (Nanyang division). The three projects are making good progress, and are scheduled for completion by the middle of 2017, end of 2019 and end of 2018 respectively. We have also completed the NRP consensus gathering for Blocks 130 to 146 Choa Chu Kang Ave 1 and Teck Whye Lane late last year (Chua Chu Kang division), and more recently, the Penduduk dan Sahabat yang Dikasihi, public consultation for Blocks 401 to 428 Choa Saya amat berbangga untuk dapat memberitahu Chu Kang Ave 3 and 4 (Keat Hong division). semua penduduk kami tentang perubahan dan perkembangan terkini yang berlaku di Bandar Chua Community Improvement Projects (CIP) Chu Kang yang cantik dan yang kami cintai. Housing: Turning Squatters into Stakeholders - An immediate task facing Singapore’s first independent government was to fix the housing problem. The housing landscape in the post-war 1940s and 1950s was a melange of slums, overcrowding, unhygienic living conditions and a lack of decent accommodation. Singapore now boasts high standard of living with over 80 percent of Singapore’s resident population living in public housing. How has Singapore managed this in a mere half-century? Drawing from first-hand interview material with urban pioneers and current practitioners, this study traces the evolution of Singapore’s public housing story. Beyond the brick and mortar, it interweaves and fleshes out how Singapore has managed to use public housing policies to achieve wider social and nation building goals - to root an immigrant population and build a home-owning democracy; eradicate ethnic enclaves; meet the aspirations of Singapore’s growing middle class; care for the less fortunate; and foster a sense of community. The Singapore Urban Systems Studies Booklet Series draws on original Urban Systems Studies research by the Centre for Liveable Cities, Singapore (CLC) into Singapore’s development over the last half-century. The series is organised around domains such as water, transport, housing, planning, industry and the environment. Developed in close collaboration with relevant government agencies and drawing on exclusive interviews with pioneer leaders, these practitioner-centric booklets present a succinct overview and key principles of Singapore’s development model. Important events, policies, institutions, and laws are also summarised in concise annexes. The booklets are used as course material in CLC’s Leaders in Urban Governance Programme.
