Bruce Phillips Southern Arizona Const. Co. Victim died from injuries August 6, 1980 Metcalf Open Pit received when he attempted to get his loader back on the road. The loader rolled down the hill, crushing the victim.
Gordon Brock Sunset Mine Victim died from injuries August 16, 1980 received when the wheel of his loader dropped off the ramp and flipped 180 degrees, landing on its top.

The Offlce of State Mine Inspector conducted 1,631 inspections and ' visits during 1980. These inspections were conducted to enforce the health and safety statutes and rules and regulations which pertain to mining in the State of Arizona. During these health and safety inspections, the following health surveys were conducted: testing of diesel units; taking of dust, gas, noise, radiation, and ventilation samples ; testing of elevator equipment ; and performing electrical continuity and ground tests.
PERMITS ISSUED DURING 1980
The Off ice of State Mine Inspector issued permits for 86 pieces of diesel equipment and certificates for 55 elevators.
