Avendaño & Frank Lambert Received 15 February 2013 Summary.―Upper Magdalena Tapaculo Scytalopus rodriguezi was described (in 2005) as restricted to the headwaters of the Magdalena Valley in dpto. Huila, Colombia. Here we describe a new but related taxon from the Serranía de los Yariguíes, dpto. Santander, Colombia, c.580 km to the north, which difers in its darker dorsal coloration, shorter tail, smaller body, lower mass and lower pitched song with reduced frequency bandwidth in its notes. Scytalopus tapaculos are small, primarily montane suboscines that inhabit the understorey of Neotropical forests. Species limits within the genus are problematic because of the morphological homogeneity of diferent populations, which masks a rich diversity, only detected in recent decades via vocal and genetic studies. Since vocalisations are believed to be innate and distinctive among genetically divergent Scytalopus species, and vocal diferentiation tracks molecular diferentiation more so than morphology (Arctander & Fjeldså 1994), the number of recognised species of Scytalopus has increased dramatically from ten in the mid 1990s to more than 40 today (Krabbe & Schulenberg 1997; see also, e.g., Krabbe & Schulenberg 2003, Krabbe & Cadena 2010, Hosner et al. 2013). Four new Scytalopus taxa have been described from Colombia since the late 1990s: Chocó Tapaculo S. chocoensis (Krabbe & Schulenberg 1997), Upper Magdalena Tapaculo S. rodriguezi (Krabbe et al. 2005), Stiles’ Tapaculo S. stilesi (Cuervo et al. 2005) and a subspecies of Pale-bellied Tapaculo S. -

[email protected], [email protected] Jorge Enrique Avendaño-C. 1 Escuela de Biología, Universidad Industrial de Santander, Bucaramanga, Colombia [email protected] ABSTRACT We analysed biometrics, plumage and voice and inspected specimens to study the taxonomy of various high elevation tapaculos Scytalopus of the Eastern Andes of Colombia and the Mérida Andes of Venezuela. In light of a lack of any diagnostic vocal, plumage or biometric character, we propose treating S. infasciatus as a subjective junior synonym of S. griseicollis . S. fuscicauda and S. meridanus are indistinguishable by morphology, but we propose treating S. fuscicauda as a subspecies of S. meridanus in light of small observed differences in introductions to songs, which require further investigation. As the names were published contemporaneously, we propose priority for S. meridanus over S. fuscicauda . S. meridanus and S. griseicollis as redefined are each diagnosable vocally, supporting species rank for both of them. S. griseicollis gilesi subsp. nov. is described from the Yariguíes mountains. The new subspecies differs from S. griseicollis in its darker plumage, lower acoustic frequency scolds and longer tail. The recently discovered Eastern Andes population of S. spillmanni differs from Ecuadorian populations in its shorter tarsus length and slower song, meeting the requirements for some, but not all, subspecies concepts. -

Brazil North Eastern Mega Birding 27th September to 18th October 2019 (22 days) Trip Report Lear’s Macaws by Stephan Lorenz Trip report compiled by Tour Leader: Stephan Lorenz Trip Report – RBL Brazil – North Eastern Mega Birding 2019 2 Tour Summary Northeast Brazil offers a combination of rare endemics and endangered specialty birds unparalleled anywhere in South America. In addition, this true to the term mega tour took us through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country, from the stark caatinga and inselbergs in the north through the rugged cliffs of the Chapada Diamantina and finally to the lush Atlantic rainforest in the coastal areas of Bahia. In between, we birded in marshy grasslands, thorn scrub, intact cerrado, remnant forests on remote hill tops, montane forest, and finally lush lowland rain forest. Our 5600- kilometre journey offered one the grandest birding adventures anywhere. The birds were even more spectacular than the landscape with the top four sightings as chosen by participants offering a good overview of Brazil’s diversity: 1. Lear's Macaw, 2. Giant Snipe, 3. Blue-eyed Ground Dove, and 4. Banded Cotinga with honorable mentions Giant Snipe by Stephan Lorenz given to Black-and-white Hawk Eagle, Ringed Woodpecker, Hook-billed Hermit, Horned Sungem, Hyacinth Visorbearer, Toco Toucan, Henna-capped Foliage-gleaner, Cipo Canastero, White-bibbed Antbird, White-browed Antpitta, and Blue Manakin. Overall, we recorded 106 Brazilian endemics and 503 species! Ecologically heavily influenced by the dry south-west monsoon that batters the islands in May–September, it boasts high endemism in plants, reptiles, insects and birds, which I will summarise. Whilst its avifauna is species-poor, with just 42 regular breeders, 11 are endemic, making it the richest area of avian endemism in the Middle East (along with the highlands of south-west Arabia). From 1999 to 2011, I have been engaged in mapping the distribution and determining the populations of the breeding species and I will present some of my findings. -

The rare and stunning endemic Banded Cotinga was the favorite bird on the 2019 tour (Eduardo Patrial) NORTHEAST BRAZIL 18 FEBRUARY – 12/16 MARCH 2019 LEADER: EDUARDO PATRIAL After a year break we are back in 2019 with another very successful Northeast Brazil tour. Over five hundred species (506) recorded in twenty seven days through this large region, covering mainly the arid Caatinga physiognomies from north to south, several Atlantic Forest hotspots (mainly in Southern Bahia) and even a small taste from the Cerrado. The NE Brazil tour is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding birding trips in South America once there’s so many endemic and localized species in this vast, rich and also scenic region of Brazil. But achieving this impressive number of specialties is never a simple task. The need of an accurate logistics and previous knowledge in the area is primordial to see some of the rarest and most threatened species of birds. Our groups usually work hard and this time was no different, we finished the trip with high quality birds and a total of 105 genuine Brazilian endemics (not to mention other Atlantic Forest endemic and several subspecies treated as full species by other taxonomies). Repeating as last time (2017), we started the tour by Sobral with another cooperative ghost in the first night called Buff-fronted Owl, what a treat! Sobral with a hundred percent gain on this bird. This year we had the chance for the first time to explore some interesting transitional forest in Poções (southern Bahia), a day where the rare Raiser’s Tyrannulet 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Northeast Brazil 2019.
