When Henry VIII www.tracksintime.wyjs.org.uk abolished the monasteries in the 16th century, many Church tithe rights were sold into private hands. Owners of tithe rights on land which had Contacting Us previously belonged to the Church were known as ‘Lay Impropriators’. Tithe charges were extinguished in 1936. We recommend that you contact us to book a place before visiting our What is a tithe map? searchrooms. Disputes over the assessment and collection of tithes were resolved by the WYAS Bradford Margaret McMillan Tower Tithe Commutation Act of 1836. This allowed tithes in kind (wheat, hay, Prince’s Way wool, piglets, milk etc.) to be changed into a fixed money payment called a Bradford ‘tithe rent charge’. Detailed maps were drawn up showing the boundaries BD1 1NN of individual fields, woods, roads, streams and rivers, and the position of Telephone +44 (0)113 393 9785 buildings. Most tithe maps were completed in the 1840s. e. [email protected] What is a tithe apportionment? • Alwoodley Parish – Application For
ALWOODLEY PARISH COUNCIL APPLICATION FOR DESIGNATION OF A NEIGHBOURHOOD AREA Prepared on behalf of Alwoodley Parish Council 5 November 2013 Introduction Alwoodley, for the purposes of this application, is a civil parish created in 2008 within the City of Leeds. Some of the adjacent areas are commonly referred to as being in Alwoodley but do not form part of the civil parish. It lies some 5 miles north of the city centre on the northern edge of the West Yorkshire conurbation. The parish is on a ridge between the valleys of the River Aire and River Wharfe. It is bounded by the suburbs of Adel and Bramhope to the west, Harrogate Road to the east, Moor Allerton to the south and Harewood parish to the north. The northern part of the parish is mixed farmland in the Green Belt in which Eccup Reservoir is situated. To the north of the parish is the Harewood Estate. Moortown and Sandmoor golf courses lie within the parish together with part of Headingley golf course. There are several sports fields. The site of a Roman road crosses the parish from West to East, from Ilkley to Tadcaster, close to Alwoodley Lane. Alwoodley Old Hall stood adjacent to the site of Eccup Reservoir in the present grounds of Sandmoor Golf Club. Built in the 17th century it was demolished in 1969. Early on the 20th century Alwoodley became a leisure destination for Leeds inhabitants; before that it was an isolated agricultural community. Much of the suburban area was developed between 1920 and 1980 . Leeds Country Way and two long distance footpaths, the Dales Way and the Ebor Way, cross or lie on the edge of the parish.

Heckmondwike Petanque Club, Algernon Firth Park, Heckmondwike, WF16 0HH Heckmondwike is very nearly on the A62 from Huddersfield to Leeds. The park is on the main A638 road which goes from The Swan Traffic lights into the town centre locally but navigation is difficult as Heckmondwike has a complex one way system. If you can find Morrisons petrol station or the Medical Centre there is a roundabout opposite the entrance and Firth Park is a turning off that. By car From the North West. Leave the M62 at junction 25. Turn right towards Dewsbury. After about 1 mile bear left at the Dumb Steeple roundabout/lights onto the A62. Keep going for 3 miles until you pass the Golden Fish chippy on your right. Turn right onto Union Road. Carry on for 1 mile until you reach a roundabout. Turn left into Firth Park. From Leeds or the east. Leave Leeds on A62 or leave M62 at Junction 27 and go past IKEA retail park and through Birstall 6 lane ends traffic lights. Keep going on A62 past Peking Duck then after half a mile just before Plannit Kitchens turn left onto Union Road. Carry on this road for 1 mile until you reach a roundabout. Turn left into Firth Park. By Bus The 209 and the 219 go from Leeds to Heckmondwike. The 221 from Leeds to Mirfield via Heckmondwike. The 229 from Leeds to Huddersfield via Heckmondwike. The 254 goes from Wakefield through Heckmondwike to Leeds The 268 goes from Dewsbury to Bradford via Heckmondwike. Going home. Much easier.

After over twenty five years as postmasters at Kirkheaton Post Office on St Mary’s Lane, Lynn and Michael Whitehouse are preparing to stick their last stamps, weigh their last parcels, close the PO and retire. Fortunately, Kirkheaton is not losing its PO. If all goes to plan it will relocate to the newsagents at the corner of Shop Lane and Town Road in the near future. However, this has caused some concern among residents as parking and pedestrian access are serious issues in the area. But on the plus side it will have two Bumper open counters and will be open for longer hours six and half days a week. Various other venues were considered but have issue! had to be discounted for varying reasons. NCS SUCCESS Michael became postmaster in April 1998 after a career as a mining surveyor. He commented “ When Margaret Thatcher THIRTY YEARS ON! closed down all the pits, my job disappeared, so I did what I always fancied doing - run a PO - which I’ve really enjoyed.” DALTON WARD During his 25 years at the job he has seen many changes. WEEKEND “Business has changed. At one time there were OAP’s queuing out of the door to collect their money on pension days. All that has gone now as pensions are paid directly into bank accounts. The government has also moved many of its services online so many people no longer renew their car tax or buy their TV licences etc at the PO.
