In addition to those who have read, criticized, and helped improve our manuscript, we have received suggestions which could have resulted in articles for the authors themselves but for their unselfish contributions to our work. In a real sense, this study is the result of a group effort beyond the three authors listed. Questions raised by Mr. Paul Sampson while working on a graduate history paper provided the immediate impetus for the study. He also generously provided us with all of his notes and bibliographic work. Initial encouragement and the financial support was provided by Professors Leonard J. Arrington and Thomas G. Alexander, direc- tors of the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University. Our two research assistants, Michael Cleverley and Maureen Arce- neaux, were extraordinarily helpful. Not only did they perform the bur- densome task of gathering and manipulating an enormous amount of data with great skill, but they also made several suggestions which led to innovative and fruitful areas of research. For example, the procedure used to estimate annual population from a combination of census and annual tax records was suggested by Mr. Cleverley. Professor Peter Crawley of the Mathematics Department at Brigham Young University suggested the procedure used to estimate the circula- tion of Kirtland notes, provided us with lists of serial numbers for those notes which he has collected over the years, and made other helpful suggestions regarding the bank. -

NAUVOO’S TEMPLE Dean E. Garner—Institute Director, Denton, Texas t was announced August 31, 1840, that a temple would be built, and Iarchitectural plans began to come in. Joseph Smith “advertised for plans for the temple,” William Weeks said, “and several architects presented their plans. But none seemed to suit Smith. When [William] presented his plans, Joseph Smith grabbed him, hugged him and said, ‘You are the man I want.’”1 Thus William was made superintendent of temple construction. All his work was cleared by the temple building committee. Those on the committee were Reynolds Cahoon, Elias Higbee, and Alpheus Cutler.2 Joseph Smith had the final say pertaining to the details of the temple, for he had seen the temple in vision, which enabled him to make decisions on the temple’s appearance.3 During the October Conference of 1840, the building of the Nauvoo During the temple was voted on and accepted by the saints. Manscill The Savior answers his own question when he says, “What manner of men ought ye to be? Even as I am.” In a similar way I say, “What manner of man ought we to be? Even as Richard Cowan.” My association with Richard and Dawn Cowan over these many years has demonstrated not only that they are followers of Christ in word and deed but that the Savior’s light emanates from their countenance. Indeed, Richard’s collective body of works—books, articles, teaching, and citizenship—leaves us with a lasting legacy to read and study for many years to come. It is with this sentiment that I write and dedicate this article to the Cowans’ love of temples. ver the years, the scholarly community has written exten- sively about the structure and construction of the Kirtland Temple in Ohio.1 Together, these formative works con- Ostitute our collective knowledge of the structure and construction of the Kirtland Temple. However, these authors, for the most part, have overlooked the involvement and contributions of Hyrum Smith. Smith, the older brother of the Prophet Joseph Smith, was assigned to supervise construction, raise funds, and promote unity and spiritual- ity among the Kirtland Saints in preparation for the solemn assembly to be held at the dedication of the temple. Consulting Smith’s personal diaries, letters, daybook, and account book adds important details to the collective history of the Kirtland Temple.2 Including the Smith 48 P An Eye of Faith papers in the temple narrative from conception to the dedication will provide new information and collaborate established facts about the structure and construction of this house. -

Martin Harris: the Kirtland Years, 18314870
Martin Harris: The Kirtland Years, 18314870 H. Michael Marquardt MARTIN HARRIS IS KNOWN for being a Book of Mormon scribe, witness, and financier. However, little is known about his activities while living in Kirtland, Ohio, for over thirty-five years. This article will present what is known about Harris during the Kirtland years. Included will be his re- lationship to other Restoration churches under the leadership of James J. Strang (including Harris's mission to England), William E. McLellin, and so forth. A brief background of Harris's life in New York will also be given to help understand his place in the early life of the church. NEW YORK SEEKER Martin Harris was born on 18 May 1783 at Eastown, New York. He was a well-established farmer of Palmyra, Ontario (later Wayne) County, New York. At the age of twenty-six, Harris married his cousin Lucy; he was nine years her senior. They had a family of four known children. He became a close associate of Joseph Smith, Jr., whom he assisted finan- cially, and he acted as a scribe to Smith.1 He also financed the publication of the Book of Mormon by mortgaging his farm. As an early convert of Mormonism, he was received into fellowship by baptism on the day the church was organized. Due to the time and resources spent on his new re- ligion, Harris became partially separated from his wife, Lucy. Orsamus Turner, a printer in New York, described Harris thusly: Martin Harris, was a farmer of Palmyra, the owner of a good farm, and an honest worthy citizen; but especially given to religious enthusiasm, new creeds, the more extravagant the better; a monomaniac, in fact.2 1. -

Prospectus William Weeks and the Ephemeral Temple at Nauvoo Central to the early Mormon concept of the City of Zion was the temple. Confronting violent opposition in Ohio and Missouri, in 1839 the Mormons fled to their new Zion at Nauvoo, Illinois situated along a horseshoe bend on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River. In 1840, work on a new temple commenced which would define and establish the permanency of Mormonism. The primitive theology and ritual surrounding the first Mormon temple in Ohio, developed and evolved for the more grandiose temple planned at Nauvoo. However, as Joseph Smith introduced new and controversial doctrines violent opposition increased from both inside and outside the Church. The temple rituals adapted with the expanding doctrine and necessitated an increasingly complex architectural program both on the temple’s interior and exterior. The larger Nauvoo Temple, while generally following the established prototype at Kirtland, assumed new functions and forms not anticipated during its initial planning and construction. The thesis will reexamine William Weeks’s involvement as architect in the design and construction of the Nauvoo temple, in collaboration with Joseph Smith. In particular, as architect, William Weeks materialized a definitive moment in Mormonism’s evolving cultural identity by reshaping ritual space, establishing Mormon material identity and introducing mystery and complexity in the ephemeral Nauvoo temple (1841-1846). The Nauvoo temple became the iconic symbol of Mormonism’s revolutionary doctrinal teachings during the Nauvoo period.
