One of the Better Lupin storiesBy David SwanThe story opens with Arsene Lupin and two associates breaking into a home but the crime ends a complete disaster and Lupin is forced to flee alone, his only prize a mysterious Crystal Stopper. The problem is the stopper is almost immediately stolen from his possession and Lupin is obsessed with regaining an item that would normally appear to be utterly worthless.I had issues with the two previous books. In the Hollow Needle, Lupin essentially became godlike in his ability to control every situation and steal any item. LeBlanc toned him way down for 813 but the story was nearly impossible to follow with way too many characters and twists. The Crystal Stopper improves by keeping the story simple and having a very human Arsene Lupin. It is possibly the most intriguing Lupin story with Lupin becoming very engaged in helping free one of his henchmen who faces execution because of his involvement with Lupin. Lupin eventually becomes involved (not romantically) with his henchmen's own mother who explains that her boy fell in with the wrong crowd because of the influence of a man bent on revenge against her. The irony being that Lupin himself would be the wrong crowd although that's never explicitly stated. As with most of the Lupin stories the Gentleman Thief is pitted against an adversary, in this case an entirely corrupt police deputy. About halfway through the story Lupin goes head to head with Deputy Daubrecq and finds himself entirely outmaneuvered. Having Lupin as a real, fallible human is so much better than incomparable, omniscient Lupin from The Hollow Needle. Daubrecq is probably Lupin's best foe since Herlock Sholmes and this is probably my favorite Lupin story yet.10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. This Kindle Version Is Missing Paragraphs of TextsBy Sol T. KimCrystal Stopper is one of the most entertaining Arsene Lupin adventures. Lupin is put on the defensive from the opening and has to fight his way out of the hole in which he finds himself. I highly recommend the book and prefer it to other versions where Lupin basically plays the superman. This particular Kindle version, however, is problematic. It is missing entire paragraphs from the book. Specifically, any time the original book paraphrases a letter or newspaper article, this version simply omits it. So frequently you get texts like the following (directly quoted):Among the late news he found the following pargraphs:In between other newspapers and prospectuses lay a letter. Lupin jumped when he say it. It was addressed:"Oh," he gasped, "a letter from Gilbert!" It contained these few words:Once again, Lupin spent a night alternating between sleeplessness and nightmares. This is extremely frustrating and takes away a great deal from book. Again, I highly recommend the book but there must be a better e-version of the book than this one.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Non-Stopper for Arsene LupinBy Karen Amrhein"The Crystal Stopper" is a ripping tale, with non-stop intrigue, action, twists and turns, and a healthy dose of Lupin humor. The story concerns the mysterious pursuit, appearances and disappearances -- and reappearances -- of a crystal decanter stopper. Why are so many people hot to get their hands on this seemingly worthless object? How is it being found and then lost again so readily? To say anything more about the plot is to risk revealing something, which would be to spoil some of the great fun in being carried along, with the irrepressible thief / scoundrel / hero Arsene Lupin, on this roller-coaster ride of a tale. There's plenty of danger, narrow scrapes, cryptic clues, harrowing rescues, and clever ruses to keep you on the edge of your seat for many evenings of reading pleasure. If you like Lupin stories (or Raffles or The Saint), I can't imagine you won't love "The Crystal Stopper". Classic Crime Press presents you The Crystal Stopper in a fantastic ebook edition. The Crystal Stopper is a mystery novel by Maurice Leblanc featuring the adventures of the gentleman thief Arsegrave;ne Lupin. The novel appeared in serial form in the French newspaper Le Journal from September to November 1912 and was released as a novel subsequently. Maurice Leblanc was inspired by the infamous Panama scandals of 1892 and 1893. The novel borrows from Edgar Allan Poersquo;s short story The Purloined Letter the idea of hiding an object in plain sight. During a burglary at the home of Deputy Daubrecq a crime is committed and two accomplices of Arsegrave;ne Lupin are arrested by the police. One is guilty of the crime, the other innocent but both will be sentenced to death. Lupin seeks to deliver the victim of a miscarriage of justice, but struggles against Deputy Daubrecqrsquo;s ruthless blackmailer, who has an incriminating document hidden in a crystal stopper. About the AuthorMaurice Marie Eacute;mile Leblanc (11 November 1864 ndash; 6 November 1941) was a French novelist and writer of short stories, known primarily as the creator of the fictional gentleman thief and detective Arsegrave;ne Lupin, often described as a French counterpart to Arthur Conan Doyle's creation Sherlock Holmes. Level 6-5 The Hollow Needle Workbook Teacher’s Guide and Answer Key Teacher’s Guide A. Summary 1. Book Summary There was a strange robbery at the house of the Count de Gesvres. The robber was shot, but there was no body, and nothing was missing. The Police Inspector came to investigate, and he met a high school student named Isidore who said he knew what was missing. Isidore used the Inspector’s baton to break the head of an angel statue that stood outside the Needle, a famous chapel near the count’s house. The Inspector was shocked, but Isidore showed him that the statue was fake. The robber had taken the real one and left a fake in its place. Then Isidore took the Inspector inside the Needle and tried to find a secret door to show where the real statue was, but he could not find any. After the Inspector left, Lupin, the most famous thief in France, appeared. He told Isidore that he had indeed taken the statue but that he was not a thief. He took the valuables of France to hide them in the Needle to keep them safe. He said that for 500 years there had been a Lupin who served the king of France in this way and that the Needle was filled with secret rooms full of France’s treasures. Lupin said that he was the 99th Lupin, but he was getting old for the job. He asked Isidore to take his place, and Isidore agreed. 2. Chapter Summary ► Chapter 1 Late one night, at the house of the Count de Gesvres, Raymonde and Suzanne heard a noise coming from the first floor.

  • The Case of Sherlock Holmes and Arsène Lupin
Crime Fiction at the Time of the Exhibition: the Case of Sherlock Holmes and Arsène Lupin David Drake Université Paris VIII Synergies Royaume-Uni Royaume-Uni Summary: In July 1905, the new monthly Je sais tout (I Know Everything ) carried the first short story, written by Maurice Leblanc, featuring the gentleman- burglar Arsène Lupin. Lupin’s appearance and early adventures coincided with pp. 105-117 pp. the huge popularity which Sherlock Holmes, already the most popular figure in et detective fiction across the Channel, was enjoying in France. This accompanied Irlande the publication in French in the early years of the century of many of the Holmes stories. In the tale, ‘Sherlock Holmes arrive trop tard’ (‘Sherlock n° 2 Holmes Arrives Too Late’) published in Je sais tout in June 1906, Leblanc staged an initial encounter between Lupin and Sherlock Holmes. Holmes, now called - 2009 Herlock Sholmès after threats from Conan Doyle’s lawyers, again clashed with Lupin in two tales which appeared in Je sais tout in 1907/1908, and were published in February 1908 as a book entitled Arsène Lupin contre Herlock Sholmès. (Arsène Lupin contre Herlock Sholmès). The two men confronted each other once more in L’Aiguille creuse (The Hollow Needle), serialised in Je sais tout between 1908-1909 and published in book form in June 1909. This article analyses the reasons for the huge popularity of the Holmes stories in Britain and shows how Holmes and Conan Doyle were used to promote Lupin and his creator in France. It then argues that the encounters conceived by Leblanc are part of a pre- established tradition of cross-referencing in crime writing.

    c. m. naim An Extraordinary Translator: Tirath Ram Firozepuri (1885–1954)* During much of the past century, Tirath Ram Firozepurió(Tīratẖ Rām Fīrōzpūrī; henceforward TRF) was a name that conjured magic for count- less readers of popular Urdu fiction.1 Not given to writing original novels, he for decades produced superbly readable translations, chiefly from the English. His name on the cover assured his readers that they had in hand what they most desired: a rātōñ kī nīnd uṛā-dēnē-vālī kitāb (a book to make their sleep fly away). He was by no means the first to translate pop- ular English fiction into Urduóthat had been going on for some time before his appearance on the scene. But he surpassed his peers and elders by the sheer volume of his output: over 150 titles, running to more that sixty thou- sand pages. He was also superior to most of them in the quality of his work, a fact that brought him generations of devoted readers. His transla- tions usually went through several printings during his life, and many are still being reprinted in both India and Pakistan. Much though TRFís fame has persisted, hardly anything is known about the man. The dates given above come from a short notice in the Jāmiʿ Urdū Insāʾiklōpīḍiyā: Adabiyāt (Comprehensive Urdu Encyclope- dia: Literature) published by the National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language (New Delhi, 2003). They seem convincing. We may also rightly assume that TRF was born in Firozepur, for he made the city a permanent part of his professional identity.

What, no pictures?By M. MetzgerThe text of this book often refers to images that were likely printed with the original story when it was first published, but are omitted in this volume. The images are an integral part of the story and their absence makes it difficult to follow the story at times. The brief descriptions that turn up where images should appear are inadequate to a reader looking to collect the same visual clues as the characters in the novel. This makes it difficult for a reader to pursue his or her own conclusions or even keep up with the characters as they come to theirs. It's an annoyance to anyone who likes to keep on top of facts as they read, but the story is still comprehensible with the missing images.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful.
