Public housing schemes in Fethard (Woodvale Walk, Fr. Tirry Park, Canon Hayes Court, Slievenamon Close, Barrack Street and Kilnockin View) provide one hundred and eighty-one houses.     RaboDirect PRO12 : PREVIEW 2012/13 Round 18: 22ND & 23RD March 2013 ROUND 18 PREVIEWS With just five rounds left to decide which teams will contest the Play-Offs, there is a new leader of the RaboDirect PRO12 with Glasgow Warriors taking over the mantle from Ulster, whilst for the fourth round in succession, Ospreys swapped places with Scarlets in the Play-Off Zone. Three of those teams are in action on Friday night; Ulster traveling to Edinburgh, Ospreys hosting Welsh rivals Newport Gwent Dragons, and Scarlets in Italy to face Zebre. Edinburgh can do their Scottish neighbours, Warriors, a favour if they can defeat Ulster however their record against the Ulstermen is not great. Meanwhile Ospreys and Scarlets must both be looking to come away with maximum points from opponents who are sitting at the wrong end of the table in their bids to reach the Play-Offs. The leaders, Glasgow Warriors, are not in action until Saturday, and are the only one of the potential Play-Off teams to face another side from the top half of the table when the visit Leinster at the RDS. Munster will also be looking for maximum points in the All-Irish clash against Connacht if they are to make a final push for the knockout stages. With just two points separating the top three teams in the table, whilst it is even closer for the final Play Off spot, there is definitely all to play for still as the RaboDirect PRO12 enters its closing stages.     RaboDirect PRO12 PREVIEW 2012/13 Round Nine: 23rd – 25th November 2012 ROUND NINE PREVIEWS With the completion of their postponed Round 4 game against Zebre, Ulster have now pulled out a six points lead at the top of the RaboDirect PRO12 table. They are in action in Italy again on Friday night when they face Benetton Treviso at Stadio Monigo, and will be looking to extend their unbeaten record in the country as well as maintaining their 100per cent start to this season’s RaboDirect PRO12. Current RaboDirect PRO12 champions, Ospreys, are also in action on Friday night travelling to Murrayfield to play Edinburgh Rugby. Ospreys sit just outside the top four due to poorer points difference than Munster, should results go their way this weekend it could be the first time they have entered the Play-Off zone this season. The match of the day must be the encounter at Scotstoun where third placed Glasgow Warriors must overcome the reigning European champions, Leinster if they are to set a new Warriors record in this tournament of seven successive wins. The final game on Friday night is in Wales when Newport Gwent Dragons host Connacht. Both teams have had a mixed start to their seasons, and a win would be a welcome boost to their campaigns. The round concludes with two games on Sunday, Munster v Scarlets and Zebre v Cardiff Blues. After having narrowly missed out to Ulster last weekend, Zebre are still looking for their first win in the completion, and will be hoping Blues poor form continues for one more week.

After a bad start losing the Waterford Crystal and League first round our Senior Hurlers had four very impressive League wins on the trot to qualify for the League play-offs. A most disappointing one point loss to Waterford in the League Semi was put aside as we overcame our bogey team Limerick in the Munster Championship with a sixteen point victory in their own Gaelic Grounds. This was followed up with a Munster Final win over Waterford and momentum was building towards an All Ireland Final.

    Background to Stanwix Hospital and Alms - houses The familiar red - brick terrace of small hou ses, in their own grounds, has stood in Kickham Street, Thurles, since 1889. Colloquially known in Thurles as “The Widows’ Homes”, their official title is “The Stanwix Hospital and Alms - houses”. The first residents , ten widows, moved in at the beginning of September 1890. There was a M atron to supervise, and by the end of 1898 the 2 nd phase of the complex was completed, with the addition of a further 8 houses. Ever since, they have provided sheltered housing for women in retirement, faithful to th e vision of the founder Emma Sla ughter Stanwix. Emma Stanwix , an English woman, an absente e Landlord, a private and reserved lady, an arti st, lived for many years in Versailles, France. S he i nherited her estate of 14 town s - lands in Moycarkey p arish from her father Thomas Sla ughter Stanwix, a high - ranking Officer in the English army. Wilson’s Di rectory lists Shanbally Castle, near Moycarkey, as the residence of Thomas Sla ughter Stanwix , though he rarely, if ever, lived there. Away on army duties, he was commissioned a s Lieutenant - General in 1806 . Going further back in history, during the Cromwellian Wars (1649 - ’52 ) , Cromwell and his forces spent over six months in Mid Tipperary. His cannon shelled Moycarkey Castle, doing considerable damage. Moycarkey Castle was the home of the Cantwell family, An glo - Normans, at the time. William and John Cantwell held substantial lands, and these were confiscated in the Cromwellian Plantation (1653).

    ‘A most public spirited and unselfish man’1: the career and contribution of Colonel Maurice Moore, 1854-1939 DAITHÍ Ó CORRÁIN (St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra) Despite his lengthy and varied career, Maurice Moore has faded from history. His has not been a life story repeatedly retold like those of prominent figures during the Irish Revolution or indeed like his older brother, George, the distinguished novelist.2 Though included in the Dictionary of Irish Biography and frequently referred to in the context of the Irish Volunteers, Moore’s activities and interests have not received an in-depth appraisal.3 The present account, which is based on his personal papers, aims to rectify this and to rescue him from relative obscurity. By professional training a soldier, Moore was decorated for his service and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel of the Connaught Rangers. Yet he was an unconventional army officer. As described in section 1 below, Moore was highly critical of British methods to undermine Boer resolve during the Second South African War; this generated significant public controversy. The efforts by the Boers to achieve independence and the establishment of the Union of South Africa as a dominion in 1910 left a lasting impression on Moore and influenced his thinking on Irish self-government. His familiarity with the country and Jan Smuts were central to Moore’s appointment by Dáil Éireann as secret envoy to South Africa in April 1 ‘Reminiscences by Diarmid Coffey’ (NLI, Coffey and Chenevix Trench papers, MS 46,315/5).
