John Coltrane (1926 -1967) Born in Hamlet, North Carolina, John Coltrane played tenor and soprano saxophone. Portraying the music as it was his soul, he became one of the most remembered musicians of all time. '---:::::.11

So many other musicians admired Coltrane's music and his talents that they wished to echo his sound in the world of jazz. This has made Coltrane one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz. Some songs he is known for: "My Favorite Things," and "Love Supreme."

lgia Mae Hinton (1929-) In addition to being a talented singer and Piedmont guitar player, Johnston County, North Carolina, born Algia Mae Hinton is a buckdancer (folk dancer) and plays the comb. She was taught to play guitar at nine by her mother, Ollie O'Neil, who could play several stringed instruments. Hinton spent most of her life working on a tobacco farm and raising a family. In 1978, she made her professional debut at the North Carolina Folklife Festival. She released her first in 1997.

ina Simone (1933- 2003) lit up the stage with her beautiful voice. Born as Eunice Waymond in Tryon, North Carolina, she began her musical career by playing piano at the young age of four.

She continued her music and education at Julliard School o Music in New York and later changed her name to Nina Simone, after the French actress Simone Signoret.

While she had a full range of different jazz styles, she sang classical, gospel, musical, opera, African chants and also wrote her own music. She was recognized as the "High Priestess of Soul."

Simone became very well known singing at prestigious jazz sites and New York City's Carnegie Hall, Rhode Island's Newport Jazz Festival, and abroad at the Nice Jazz Festival in France.

Some songs she was known for include "I Loves You Porgy" and "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl." 102
