The Men’s Club Presents:

Saturday, April 7th, 2018, 8PM $20 General Admissions $5 Student Tickets Note From the Conductor Warm Greetings to All--

The University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club is honored to offer our 160th Annual Fall Concert for you this evening, titled, “You Are Enough”.

Tonight’s concert features music spanning over 200 years with songs representing numerous cultures and singing traditions. Most notably, a portion of our program this evening was inspired by multiple conversations with members of the Glee Club over the course of last year focused on the topic of mental health. I was so moved by the vulnerability of these Clubbers and their desire to create a caring culture in the Glee Club to support each person’s mental health journey. I felt we had an opportunity to use our artistic platform as a way to elevate conversations regarding mental health for the sake of the Glee Club, the University and the broader community.

The Glee Club members embraced this focal point wholeheartedly, and we commissioned three brand new pieces to speak to this topic head on. Aron Accurso, a composer, conductor and Broadway music director from City, partnered with us to bring this new music to life. The simple, yet profound statement, “You are enough, you are so enough, it’s unbelievable how enough you are” became the core message behind the commissioning project. Beyond music, we’ve formed strategic partnerships with mental health organizations this fall, including The Chalkboard Project, Wolverine Support Network, CAPS, Garrett’s Space, and the MyVoice study on Mental Health to name a few. All of this with the aim to serve our community through song and end the stigma associated with mental health.

As you walked into HIll Auditorium this evening, you saw pictures brought to us by our friends at The Chalkboard Project, of our Clubbers holding chalkboards containing words representing the negative labels they have believed to be true about themselves at points within each of their lives. As you leave tonight, we invite you to take part in helping to transform these negative labels by writing positive and true words for each Clubber. Words matter when it comes to our mental health and we thank you for helping us be mindful to change the way we speak to one another.

Additionally, following our concert, we will be hosting a “concert talk-back” featuring a panel of people deeply invested in advancing conversations and critical care for all people in their mental health journey. This panel will include the composer of the “You Are Enough” Mental Health Suite, Aron Accurso, along with other significant influencers and scholars from across the University community. This “talk-back” will be held right here inside the auditorium immediately following the concert.

Whether this is your first concert with the Men’s Glee Club, or you’ve lost count of how many you’ve attended over the years, we are truly grateful for your presence with us this evening. Our hope is that you will leave here encouraged and strengthened for life’s journey through the message of our music and our passion for singing.

In Tradition, Camaraderie and Musical Excellence,

Mark Stover

Reprinted from programs in London’s Royal Festival Hall:

“During a recent test in the hall, a note played mezzo forte on the horn measured approximately 65 decibels of sound. A single ‘uncovered’ cough gave the same reading. A handkerchief placed over the mouth when coughing assists in obtaining a pianissimo.”

Please refrain from coughing until each piece is finished and be sure personal electronics are in silent mode or switched off during the concert.

University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club History T

Founded in 1859, The University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club is one of the oldest i d a r collegiate choruses in the United States and has been long acclaimed as one of the finest male choruses in the world. The Glee Club is known for its wide repertoire of music that incorporates selections from different musical styles and periods

including Renaissance motets, Romantic anthems, opera choruses, folksongs, t spirituals, contemporary works, and, of course, Michigan songs. Since 2011, the club n o i has premiered over twenty new arrangements and compositions.

In 1959, Michigan Men’s Glee Club was the first American male chorus to win the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, (and has since won three C more first prizes at the same competition). In 1967, the Glee Club circled the globe in celebration of the University’s sesquicentennial year. Recent international tours have included Southeast Asia (1989), Eastern and Central Europe (1992), South e i r e d a r a m a America (1996), Australia (2000), the British Isles (2004), Spain (2008), Cuba (2011), China (2012), and South Africa (2016). The Club has made appearances at Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Halls at Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and the pre-game festivities for the 1984 World Series. Other notable appearances include the 1986 and the 2004 IMC National Seminar at Harvard University, the American Choral Directors Association Central Division Conventions in 1992, 2000, 2010, and the ACDA National Convention in San Diego in 1997. The Club was also honored to be featured on Mannheim Steamroller’s double platinum CD Christmas Extraordinaire in 2001. Recently, they gave two performances at the esteemed National American Choral Directors Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah (2015) and appeared at the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses

National Seminar at the University of Illinois (2016). M In 2016, the Michigan Men’s Glee Club recorded and premiered its documentary

film, “Love, Life & Loss.” This film documents the Club’s performance of “Seven i s u Last Words of the Unarmed,” a multi-movement work by Joel Thompson commemorating the lives of African American men lost due to brutality. The film

won five Michigan Emmy awards, was featured in a broadcast on Detroit Public c Television, and has been submitted to film festivals worldwide for screenings. In l a June 2017, the documentary received seven Michigan Emmy Awards for directing, performance and compositions. E

The scope of the Men’s Glee Club reaches far beyond rehearsals and performances; x the Club is a vibrant social organization with a national outreach program to c

diverse communities called “Brothers in Song.” Through this program, the Glee Club n e l l e partners with organizations such as Detroit School of Arts, Chicago Children’s Choir, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and others. In addition, the group frequently collaborates with Glee Clubs around the nation such as Michigan State, Cornell, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Miami of Ohio, Harvard, and Yale Glee Clubs. The graduate and undergraduate members of the Glee Club represent many diverse fields of study in the majority of the University’s 19 schools and colleges, and its c student officers are responsible for the management of all non-musical Glee Club e operations. The Friars, an a cappella subset of the Glee Club, serve as an extension of Club as they maintain an ambitious performing schedule.

Laudes atque Carmina (text by Charles M. Gayley)

Laudes atque carmina, May songs and praises to you, Nec hodie nec cras, O University, be sweetest, Sed omnia per tempora, not just today nor tomorrow, Dum locum habeas, but for all time, so long as you have the place. Tibi sint dulcissima, O Universitas; But may our foes, indeed, At hostes Pol, perniciter go swiftly to the crows! Eant eis korakas. O glory, victory, and virtue of everything; O Gloria, Victoria, O decus omnium, prosper, O University of Michigan. O salve Universitas Michiganensium, Michiganensium.

There Is A Meeting Here Tonight (text by Bob Gibson, Alex Hassilev, and Glenn Yarbrough) There is a meeting here tonight! Satan got mad and I am glad, Lost a soul he thought he had. Well there’s a meeting here tonight, Satan is a liar and a conjure too, There’s a meeting here tonight, You better watch out brother I can tell by your friendly face he’ll conjure you. there’s a meeting here tonight. Well there’s a meeting here tonight, Well I went down in the valley one day, There’s a meeting here tonight, Met old Satan . I can tell by your friendly face What do you reckon old Satan did say? there’s a meeting here tonight. He said, “Turn back, young man You’re too young to pray.”

The letting go: you are moving along an invisible track (you make it yourself) you are let go straight as your spine is straight you are no longer grasped empty air surrounds you

Thou didst delight my eyes (poem by Robert Bridges)

Thou didst delight my eyes: And short my joy: but yet, Yet who am I? nor first O song, do not forget. Nor last nor best, that durst Once dream of thee for prize; For what wert thou to me? The Pasture (text from You Come Too by Robert Frost)

I’m going out to clean the pasture spring; I’m going out to fetch the little calf I’ll only stop to rake the leaves away That’s standing by the mother. It’s so young, (And wait to watch the water clear, I may): It totters when she licks it with her tongue. I sha’n’t be gone long.—You come too. I sha’n’t be gone long.—You come too.

Music in the Air Combined Men of Lincoln and Men’s Glee Club (African American spiritual text)

Over my head I hear music in the air, And when I’m alone, I hear music in the air, Over my head I hear music in the air, And when I’m afraid, I hear music in the air, Over my head I hear music in the air, And when it’s dark, I hear music in the air, There must be a God somewhere. And when I’m weary, I hear music in the air.

11 Please Stay (arr. Jake Runestad, adopted from tweets using #IKeptLiving)

No! Don’t go! Hope is real. Help is real. You are breath, you are life, Don’t let your worst day be your last. you are beauty, you are light. The storm is strong, but it will pass. You think you can’t go on another day, Your story is not over. but please stay. You are not a burden to anyone. Just stay. Please stay. Just stay. You Are Enough A Mental Health Suite Inside the Storm (text by Aron Accurso)

If thoughts come like rain, I’ll stay with you inside the storm, and wind knocks you down, I’ll stay with you. You feel lost at sea, all alone; Too tired to swim, afraid you might drown, We don’t have to smile and say there’s sun You don’t have to fight on your own. We don’t have to lie and say it’s warm We’ll find our way through I’ll ride the current beside you. fog and freezing rain; I’ve been there before We’ll make it through the storm. An ocean of fear that goes on and on, But trust me there is shore. If you’re overwhelmed by water and wind And hope is a world out of view, When thoughts flood your mind, I’ll stay with you inside the storm, the tide pulls you in, I’ll stay with you. And waves break, but you can’t break through A Thought Storm (text by Aron Accurso) You are— You are worthy. “I’m not____enough.” I’m the only one. You Are Enough (text by Rachel Griffin Accurso)

(“You are enough, you are so enough, it’s unbelievable how enough you are.” -Sierra Boggess, Susan Batson)

You’ve carried words You’ve gone adrift in a sea of doubt that aren’t true so long: And forgotten the love that you knew. The labels they put on you. Write your life in bold, there’s no reason to hide. You’ve gotten lost in these storms of thoughts, You are enough. You’re so enough. And forgotten the way to break through. It’s unbelievable how enough you are. Erase them one by one, you’re not who they decide. Let the light come in and find a in you. Let the light multiply with everything you do. You are enough. You’re so enough. It’s unbelievable how enough you are. You are enough. You’re so enough. It’s unbelievable how enough you are, You’ve let them write who you are, so far, You are. They’re wrong, you are up to you. You are! You are enough!

True Colors (text by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly; ed. James Deignan)

You with the sad eyes So don’t be afraid to let it show Don’t be discouraged don’t you realize True colors are beautiful like a rainbow It’s hard to take courage In a world full of people Just smile, please smile You can lose sight of it all Don’t be unhappy and the darkness inside you Can’t remember when I Can make you feel so small last saw you laughing If this world makes you crazy I see your true colors shining through And you’ve taken all you can bear I see your true colors Just call me up and that’s why I love you ‘cause you know I’ll be there

I Have Had Singing (text by Fred Mitchell)

Singing, singing, oh the singing! Here I lie, here I lie, There was so much singing then! I have had pleasure enough, We all sang, and this was my pleasure too. I have had singing.

The boys in the fields, the chapels were full of singing, always full of singing.

He is in his second year serving as associate director of choirs at the University of Michigan where he conducts the Men’s Glee Club and the University Choir, teaches undergraduate conducting, and serves as the conductor of the Michigan Youth Chamber Singers. Professor Stover came to Ann Arbor from Northfield, Minnesota, the home of Saint Olaf College, where he served on the music faculty as conductor of the St. Olaf Chapel Choir (SATB) and Viking Chorus (TTBB) while teaching conducting and a new course he designed titled, Music and Social Justice. Both of his choirs regularly appeared in the annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival, a tradition held for over a century and regarded around the world as one of the great music festivals of the season. While teaching at St. Olaf, Prof. Stover led the Chapel Choir, Viking Chorus, and the Festival Mass Choir of over 400 voices in the St. Olaf Christmas Festival presented at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis at the 2017 National Convention of the American Choral Conductors Association (ACDA). Additionally, Stover served for multiple seasons as the artistic director of Magnum Chorum, a professional calibre choral ensemble of over 60 voices based in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Magnum Chorum was also a featured ensemble in the 2017 ACDA National Conference in the Raymond C. Brock Commission performance under the baton of Robert Spano. Notable performances and collaborations under Stover’s leadership with Magnum Chorum include the commissioning and world premiere of Paul Rudoi’s concert length musical drama, Sermon on the Mount; a collage concert creation with composer Jake Runestad addressing gun violence in the United States; and major works by Rheinberger and Gjeilo. Additionally Prof. Stover conducted the annual oratorio concert with the St. Olaf Orchestra and Chapel Choir, performing Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living, Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna and a new work by Charles Forsberg, titled, Cantica in Laude Sacri. In spring 2018, Prof. Stover’s Chapel Choir collaborated with the St. Olaf Choir and Orchestra to bring an original Buddhist oratorio to Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis for the world premiere of The Path by composer Justin Merritt. Among his most meaningful musical partnerships is the creation of a residency between the singers of Magnum Chorum and Voices of Hope, a choir made up of women incarcerated at the Shakopee Women’s Prison (MN), directed by Amanda Weber. This work of singing in prisons has now extended to the Glee Club as we have now shared in two special performances for men incarcerated at the Federal Prison in Milan, Michaign. Prof. Stover has been featured as a conductor and pedagogue throughout the United States and abroad and has led ensembles in Ukraine and France. In 2014, Stover guest conducted the famed St. Olaf Choir and led the ensemble in performances through the Midwest. In 2019, Stover was named Artistic Director of the Together In Hope Project, a professional touring choral ensemble from the Twin Cities who recently traveled to perform several concerts in Rome and throughout the state of Minnesota. Additional international engagements had him leading the 2019 Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools in Singapore and coming up in May of 2020, he will lead the Glee Club on a three week international tour through Argentina, Chile and Peru. Prof. Stover holds degrees from St. Olaf College and Luther Seminary where he studied conducting and choral repertoire under the mentorship of Dr. Anton Armstrong and Dr. Paul Westermeyer.

THE YELLOW AND BLUE (Sponsored by the UMMGC Alumni Network)

Sing to the colors that float in the light; Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue! Yellow the stars as they ride thro’ the night, And reel in a rollicking crew; Yellow the fields where ripens the grain, And yellow the moon on the harvest wain; Hail! Hail to the colors that float in the light; Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Blue are the billows that bow to the sun When yellow robed morning is due; Blue are the curtains that ev’ning has spun, The slumbers of Phœbus to woo; Blue are the blossoms to memory dear, And blue is the sapphire and gleams like a tear; Hail! Hail to the ribbons that nature has spun; Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Here’s to the college whose colors we wear, Here’s to the hearts that are true! Here’s to the maid of the golden hair, And eyes that are brimming with blue! Garlands of bluebells and maize intertwine; And hearts that are true and voices combine; Hail! Hail to the college whose colors we wear; Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!
