Registered Dietitians need to be active in legislative matters in order to ensure that legislation is written to include coverage of Medical Nutrition Therapy.

The American Dietetic Association maintains an office in Washington D.C. This office keeps abreast of pending food, nutrition and health related legislation and keeps in personal contact with federal legislators. You may contact the office at anytime with questions regarding legislative issues.

Why should ADA members be concerned about legislation?

Our jobs can be performed a great deal more effectively if we have good laws and generous government support for nutrition programs. This only happens with a great deal of work on the part of those interested in good nutrition. We as professionals in the field, have a major responsibility to make this happen. We are in a unique position to see the effects of good nutrition and good Medical Nutrition Therapy. We have a responsibility to convince law makers that they should fund good programs and provide financial reimbursement to qualified professionals working in the area of nutrition.

When do ADA members need to act?

When you are notified by members of your district association to contact your representative, it is important to contact them and voice your opinions. The numbers of letters and telephone calls do count.

What other things are important for us to do?

Make an annual donation to ADAPAC. Our PAC is extremely active and has been very effective in the past few years. This is one of the best investments you can make in the future of your profession.
