It gives me pleasure in issuing this handy publication “District Kupwara at a Glance” for the year 2019-20 brought out by the District Statistical Agency Kupwara. The book-let presents the factual information in brief highlighting the progress made in various sectors of District economy.

I am sure that the book-let will be of great use to many of us and will serve as a useful reference book of the basic statistics.

The present issue of “District Kupwara at a Glance” which relates the year is designed to give a statistical picture of the growth in various sectors of District economy. It is expected that the book-let will serve as a useful tool for analysis of economic progress of the District.

The District Statistical and Evaluation Agency acknowledges with gratitude the co-operation of various departments/organizations in making available the required data presented in this book-let in record time. Brief History of District Kupwara

Kupwara District came into existence in the year 1979 as a result of bifurcation of the erstwhile Baramulla District. The total geographical area of the district is 2379 sq. kms. The District, though hilly and covered with mountains yet has a beautiful tourist and fragrant flower spots/places namely Lolab and Bungus Valleys fast flowing streams and many other natural sceneries. Kupwara is the backward frontier District of Kashmir valley as compared to other districts of the State. The population of the District Kupwara is 8.70 lakh souls as per census 2011. The density of population is 366 persons per square kilometer. The total households are 113929 as per census 2011. The literacy rate of the District is 66.92% as per census 2011 having 77.10 Male and 54.79 Female literates. The District consists of 364 census villages, of which 355 are inhabited and 09 uninhabited/migrated, comprising of three census viz., Handwara, Kupwara and Karnah, which have now been split in to 16 viz Kupwara, Handwara, Karnah, Kralpora, Villgam, Tarathpora, Zachaldara, Langate, KralgundQaziabad, Qalamabad, Drugmulla, Trehgam, Lalpora , Sogam, Machil and Keran. The District has three Municipal Committees of Handwara, Kupwara and Langate. There are 24 CD blocks namely Kupwara, Sogam, Trehgam, Kralpora, Ramhall, Rajwar, Langate, Tangdar, Teetwal, Kalaroose , Wavoora, Machil Keran, Drugmulla, Magam, Tarathpora, Zachaldara, Mawar, Qaziabad, Nutnussa, Hyhama, Hirri Qaderabad, Meelyal, and Reddi Chowkibal. For law and order purposes, the District Kupwara has been divided into 11 Police stations, 13 Police Posts with three Sub-Judicial Courts and 05 Muncif Courts having 01 Principal District Judge Court at Kupwara and 01 Adl. District and Sessions Judge at Handwara. The District is traversed by many streams and Nallah including Mawer, Talri, Pohru, Kehmil, Lolab , Dudi, Kashir Katha, Batmoji, Qazinag etc. Due to large forest cover, thriving wide life , lush green valleys, picturesque mountains, snow clad peaks and gushing streams, the District has a huge potential in tourism. Out of the forest area, some forests are dense which provides good environment for wild animals like Black bear, red bear, tiger, Jackal, fox, dear, wild Goats etc. and birds like wild cock, ravines, crows, vulture, wood pecker, doves, crows, pigeons, sparrows, bulbul, fly catcher etc. These forest areas consists of Dividar, Kail, fir, pine, elm some species of Chinar, popular willow, walnut etc. are grown in the foot of the forest with some medical herbs like Ratenjog, Kuth, Memakh Booja etc.

The State Government has set up a separate Tourism Development Authority bringing Lolab Valley, Bungus valley and Drangyari areas under its jurisdiction and is named as “ Lolab , Bungus and Drangyari Development Authority(LBDDA). The present issue of “District Kupwara at a Glance” presents the factual position of development and other basic information of all important sectors of the District.
