As of 2014, transgender studies can boast several conferences, a number of edited collections and thematic journal issues, courses in some college curricula, and—with this inaugural issue of TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly—an academic journal with a premier university press. But while the scholarly trope of emergence conjures the cutting edge, it can also be an infantilizing temporality that communicates (and con- tributes to) perpetual marginalization. An emergent field is always on the verge of becoming, but it may never arrive. The Remains of Talat: a Dialectic Between Republic and Empire
THE REMAINS OF TALAT: A DIALECTIC BETWEEN REPUBLIC AND EMPIRE BY ROBERT W. OLSON Universityof Kentucky There is much of interest in the historiography of the Young Turks regarding their rise to power in 1908 as well as the desperate and dramatic flight from Istanbul in 1918 of some of their leaders such as Talat, Enver and Cemal among others, in a German destroyer with sundered lights.l The death of the dashing Enver Pasa occurred while fighting Soviet forces in Central Asia. Cemal and Talat were tracked down and killed by Armenian assassins. But the burial and reburial of the latter two, especially that of Talat Pasa, has received much less attention. The return of the remains of Talat Pasa from Germany and their reburial in Turkey on 25 February, 1943 and the significance of this event is the topic of this article. "Talat: Remains of...." is the interesting title of a dossier numbered 480 in the Public Record Office of Great Britain under the listing FO 195/2479. The dossier discusses the return of the body of Talat Pasa, a leader of the Committee of Union and Pro- gress (Ittihad ve Terrakki Cemyeti) and the Young Turks during 1908-1918. Talat served as Grand Vezir of the Ottoman Empire from 4 February, 1917 to October, 1918. He fled from Turkey aboard a German destroyer, along with other Young Turk leaders, during the night of November 2-3, 1918 (1-2 Tesrinisani, 1334). 1 FO 195 designates the records of the Ottoman and Turkish Embassy records of the Foreign Office. -

This article addresses population politics in the broader Young Turk era (1913-1950), which included genocide, deportation, and forced assimilation of various minority populations. The article opens with an account of the genesis of the concept ‘social engineering’ and provides a synopsis of the literature in the field of Young Turk population politics. It then focuses on the implementation of these nationalist population politics in the eastern provinces to exemplify these policies in detail. The article aims to clarify that the Armenian genocide cannot be understood in isolation from broader Young Turk population politics and argues that a generation of traumatized Young Turk politicians launched and perpetuated this violent project of societal transformation in order to secure the existence of a Turkish nation-state. -

The Armenian Genocide
The Armenian Genocide During World War I, the Ottoman Empire carried out what most international experts and historians have concluded was one of the largest genocides in the world's history, slaughtering huge portions of its minority Armenian population. In all, over 1 million Armenians were put to death. To this day, Turkey denies the genocidal intent of these mass murders. My sense is that Armenians are suffering from what I would call incomplete mourning, and they can't complete that mourning process until their tragedy, their wounds are recognized by the descendants of the people who perpetrated it. People want to know what really happened. We are fed up with all these stories-- denial stories, and propaganda, and so on. Really the new generation want to know what happened 1915. How is it possible for a massacre of such epic proportions to take place? Why did it happen? And why has it remained one of the greatest untold stories of the 20th century? There are between six and seven million alive today, and less than half live in the Republic of Armenia, a small country south of Georgia and north of Iran. The rest live around the world in countries such as the US, Russia, France, Lebanon, and Syria. They're an ancient people who originally came from Anatolia some 2,500 years ago. -

2019 Preventing Sexual Violence What is sexual violence? Sexual violence is sexual activity when consent in not obtained or not freely given. It is a serious public health problem in the United States. Sexual violence impacts every community and affects people of all genders, sexual orientations, and ages—anyone can experience or perpetrate sexual violence. The perpetrator of sexual violence is usually someone known to the victim, such as a friend, current or former intimate partner, coworker, neighbor, or family member. Sexual violence is associated with several risk and protective factors. It is connected to other forms of violence, and causes serious health and economic consequences. By using a public health approach that addresses risk and protective factors for multiple types of violence, sexual violence and other forms of violence can be prevented.1 How big is the problem? Sexual violence affects millions of people each year in the United States. Researchers know that the numbers underestimate this significant problem as many cases go unreported. Victims may be ashamed, embarrassed, or afraid to tell the police, friends, or family about the violence. Victims may also keep quiet because they have been threatened with further harm if they tell anyone or do not think that anyone will help them. Still, we do have data that show: • Sexual violence is common. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetimes. Nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 38 men have experienced completed or attempted rape and 1 in 14 men was made to penetrate someone (completed or attempted) during his lifetime.2 • Sexual violence starts early. -

Sexual violence is pervasive and often traumatizing to its victims. For a number of reasons, however, including the stigma and insensitive treatment often associated with these crimes, sexual violence remains highly underreported. Sexual violence is also a difficult concept to measure, primarily due to: inconsistent definitions of sexual assault and rape; differing reporting requirements across local, state, and national law enforcement; and low conviction rates. Barthoma (Piscataway: Gorgias Press, 2018). https://www.gorgiaspress.com/sayfo-1915 Ghattas Maqdisi Elyas (1911–2008) is one of the best-known poets of the Arameans/Assyrians, who left us poetry in Classical Syriac from his youth years as well as from his old age. A victim of the Sayfo, Ghattas, or Malfōnō Denh ḥō as he was also known, was highly influenced by the genocide. But while he actively engages in his work with the memory of his region of birth as it was before the Sayfo, the genocide itself is almost absent in his work. Tur Abdin, the area where Ghattas came from, is considered the heartland of the Syriac Orthodox church. Part of the Ottoman Empire, it was a heterogeneous area populated by Arameans/Assyrians, Armenians, Turks, Kurds, and Arabs. While the area never became entirely homogeneous —besides Kurdish, the area still features speakers of Arabic, Turkish and Aramaic— the events of the Sayfo during the First World War and the marginalization of non-Muslims in Turkey after the establishment of the Republic, continuing until the 1990s, made that there are very few Christians left in Tur Abdin today. In Ghattas’ early work, the memory of Tur Abdin from before the First World War plays a very important role. Many poems explicitly refer to phenomena in Ghattas’ region of origin, such as the landscape, cities, churches, schools, and persons. -
Critically Centering Narratives of Urban Two-Spirit Youth

Wesley, 2015 Abstract Since its inception in the early 1990s, Two-Spirit has become an identity category that many Indigenous LGBTQ people have taken up as a way to signal both their Indigeneity and their queerness. In the emerging field of Queer Indigenous Studies, Two-Spirit people have become increasingly visible, however, the engagement with youth has been limited and largely confined to the social service sector. Stepping outside of these narrow confines, my research has sought to document how Two-Spirit youth envision their day-to-day lives in relation to their communities. Using an Indigenous methodology to guide the research, I conducted sharing circles in conjunction with the Native Youth Sexual Health Network in order to engage Two-Spirit youth living in Toronto. The sharing circles revealed the limits of Two-Spirit youth’s connections to the idea of Two-Spirit community. Two-Spirit youth called for an end to homophobia and transphobia within their Indigenous communities and expressed their desire to directly participate in nation-building activities as guided by their communities’ elders. The thesis analyzes the ways that Two-Spirit identity gets used in both oppressive and decolonial ways in the context of non-profit and Two-Spirit organizations to show how cultures are built around Two-Spirit identity.
