NELLY RAU-HÄRING EAST/WEST BERLIN: SOCIETY REFLECTED IN THE PRIVATE SPHERE

For more than forty years the photographer Nelly Rau-Häring traversed the streets of Berlin with her camera, pursuing her two great passions: her enthusiasm for photography, and her curiosity about Berlin’s inhabitants. This newly released book of photos documents the checkered events of the past with a precise eye for expressive details.

Berlin, November 7, 2019 – From the mid-1960s to the 2000s Nelly Rau-Häring (*1947 in Basel) photographed moments of life in Berlin in both the East and West sectors of the city. Through the eyes of the photographer, viewers participate in the political protests of the late 1960s in West Berlin and observe the official ceremonies on May 1 and 8 in East Berlin. They are given insight into the pleasurable pastimes of East and West, such as the horse races at the Hoppegarten, Karlshorst, and . The constant transformation Berlin has always undergone ultimately culminates in the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the ensuing changes.

Rau-Häring points her lens at even this profound watershed with the same precise eye for the details of everyday human life. This allows her to produces images that reveal great symbolic force—East Germans standing in line waiting to receive West German “welcome money,” a new shop in with its nearly empty shelves, or a new auto showroom in the city center. The social upheavals can best be seen in examples of private life.

Besides her documentary pictures, Rau-Häring also produces new, unusual photographs: “The photos have to have value beyond that. Create other narratives. When I take photographs, my eye goes to what does not yet exist,” she says about her decades-long career. This volume, released to mark the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, is therefore more than a document of Berlin’s political and social landscape—it is also a reflection of the changes in society, which are revealed in personal moments and continue to exercise their influence to this day.
