MARKY DAWSON MARKY DAWSON VOX AND KEYS Pop, Rock’n’Roll, Blues Rox Management Ltd MARKY DAWSON Marky Dawson was born and raised in Broadstone, Dorset. Growing up surrounded by his dad’s impressive record collection it was almost inevitable that he would develop a love for music. And so he grew up with influences such as Ray Charles, Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel, Queen and Elton John, to name but a few. He started playing piano at age 14 and pretty soon started writing his own songs. He moved to London to get ‘spotted’ and he did get spotted, by his manager and publisher Adrian Rox. (Adrian also discovered Michael McIntyre during his days in the comedy business). Playing over 100 gigs in 2015 alone Marky has been serving his ‘apprenticeship’ doing solo gigs mainly in London and on the South Coast, but even as far afield as Austria (photo below at k.u.k in Bad Ischl). Rox Management Ltd A CD was released last autumn of piano/vocal songs called ‘First Takes’. The piano was recorded at Derek Nash’s studio (Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra) and vocals and production done by Mike Peters (B*witched, Liberty X). It includes a seminal unplugged version of Queen’s ‘Radio Gaga’, along with 5 of Marky’s impressive originals. Over the last year Marky has guested with Ben Waters, Daniel Smith, John O’Leary/Alan Glen and supported Never The Bride on many occasions and also Ben Montague. Nikki Lambourn (NTB’s vocalist, photo left) is now also Marky’s vocal coach (she coaches the likes of Beverley Knight, Newton Faulkner). -

By that measure, in recent months the eminence of the Bienen School of Music has been repeatedly reaffirmed. For the first time in the history of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, this spring one of the contestants will be a Northwestern student. EunAe Lee, a doctoral student of James Giles, is one of only 30 pianists chosen from among 290 applicants worldwide for the prestigious competition. The 15th Van Cliburn takes place in May in Ft. Worth, Texas. Also in May, two cello students of Hans Jørgen Jensen will compete in the inaugural Queen Elisabeth Cello Competition in Brussels. Senior Brannon Cho and master’s student Sihao He are among the 70 elite cellists chosen to participate. Xuesha Hu, a master’s piano student of Alan Chow, won first prize in the eighth Bösendorfer and Yamaha USASU Inter national Piano Competition. In addition to receiving a $15,000 cash prize, Hu will perform with the Phoenix Symphony and will be presented in recital in New York City’s Merkin Concert Hall. Jason Rosenholtz-Witt, a doctoral candidate in musicology, was awarded a 2017 Northwestern Presidential Fellowship. Administered by the Graduate School, it is the University’s most prestigious fellowship for graduate students. Daniel Dehaan, a music composition doctoral student, has been named a 2016–17 Field Fellow by the University of Chicago. -

by Mark Beese Near the west end of Canyon Boulevard in Boulder, Colorado, under the rock cliffs called the flatirons, sits the Town Hall of a community of thousands called etown. etown is a nationally syndicated radio show heard every week on more than 200 stations across the United States. Every etown show is taped in front of a live audience and features performances from many top musical artists, thought-provoking interviews, and the presentation of the e-chievement award recognizing everyday people who have made a difference in their community. Most of the tapings take place at the historic Boulder Theater, but the show is on the road several times each year. The show has featured live performances by artists such as Ani DiFranco, Bela Fleck, Crosby & Nash, Julian Lennon, Natalie Merchant, Los Lobos, Nancy Griffith, James Taylor and Willie Nelson. Each week the hosts interview an author, scientist, poet, or citizen about some aspect of the world and community. Interviews have included Jane Goodall, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, President Jimmy Carter, Dave Barry, and Daryl Hannah. The mission of etown is “to produce high quality programs of diverse music and conversation in order to entertain, educate and engage a wide audience in appreciating and protecting our cultural and natural resources.” By featuring diverse music and interviews, etown creates a constantly expanding "community on the air." The high point of every broadcast is the presentation of the "e-chievement award", reminding listeners that individual efforts really do make a difference and that respect for each other and our natural environment go hand in hand. -

TRANSCRIPT of OH 1905 This radio program was recorded for KGNU and aired in 2012 on the program “A Public Affair.” It later was donated to the Maria Rogers Oral History Program for archiving. The interviewer is Richard Kiefer. The interview was transcribed by Joan Nagel. ABSTRACT: Nick Forster, founder and host of the radio show eTown, talks about the program, which is produced in Boulder and broadcast on many public radio stations. He discusses the history of eTown, including its inception; how it got its name; and its mission, both in the Boulder community and beyond. He also talks about its new venue, eTown Hall, which was under construction at the time of the interview, delving into the architectural history of the building and the changes made, such as acoustical treatments, to outfit it for its new use. The interview also includes a brief appearance by Helen Forster, Nick’s wife and partner in producing eTown. NOTE: The interviewer’s questions and comments appear in parentheses. At the time, none of us could know Ingram was a harbinger of a generation of Texas musicians who, inspired by Robert Earl Keen, would lead a resurgence of interest in original, Texas country music, an echo of the progressive country of the music of Ingram’s, Kilian’s, and my childhood. -
