Accepted 9 June, 2011 This study deals with the valorization of medicinal and aromatic plants of the Tunisian flora, in order to find new bioactive natural products. The essential oil constituents from the fruits of Ammi visnaga , collected from two Tunisian localities, Ichkeul and Djebba the North of Tunisia, were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Forty-one compounds were identified. Both samples showed similar chemical composition, the major components were linalool, isoamyl 2-methyl butyrate and isopentyl isovalerate. We had a week of mostly pleasant sunny weather with only one or two spells of rain, but this did not stop us from visiting any of the important habitats. We started on the flat coastal area north of Bari, visiting some salt pans and a deserted beach where we had some excellent birdwatching and found a few unusual coastal plants, and then headed into the hills for the rest of our stay. Our base in the historic hill-top town of Monte Sant’Angelo enabled us to reach some superb orchid habitats, and we also had time to check out the grassy slopes behind the hotel, and explore the town itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The latter part of the week was spent in the charming seaside town of Peschici, in the family-run Hotel Elisa located on the harbour. -

Comparative sequencing of the intron in chloroplast ribosomal protein gene rpl16 was carried out in order to examine evolutionary relationships among 119 species (99 genera) of subfamily Apioideae and 28 species from Apiaceae subfamilies Saniculoideae and Hydrocotyloideae, and putatively allied families Araliaceae and Pittosporaceae. Phylogenetic analyses of these intron sequences alone, or in conjunction with plastid rpoC1 intron sequences for a subset of the taxa, using maximum parsimony and neighbor-joining methods, reveal a pattern of relationships within Apioideae consistent with previously published chloroplast DNA and nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS based phylogenies. Based on consensus of relationship, seven major lineages within the subfamily are recognized at the tribal level. These are referred to as tribes Heteromorpheae M. F. Watson & S. R. Downie Trib. Nov., Bupleureae Spreng. (1820), Oenantheae Dumort. (1827), Pleurospermeae M. F. Watson & S. R. Downie Trib. Nov., Smyrnieae Spreng. (1820), Aciphylleae M. F. Watson & S. R. Downie Trib. Nov., and Scandiceae Spreng. (1820). Scandiceae comprises subtribes Daucinae Dumort. (1827), Scan- dicinae Tausch (1834), and Torilidinae Dumort. (1827). -

We found that the herbarium plants were very large and varied from different parts for Iraq, in different and varied environments, which collected and arranged according to a very specific system in the herbarium for remaining an important source to all graduate students and researchers to take advantage for these plants. Also, the flowering and fruiting periods for these plants in Iraq were recorded in different regions. Most these plants begin to flower in the spring and thrive at fields and farms. The family Umbelliferae is very rich at secondary metabolites [2]. The synthesis for essential oils and oleoresin, secreted in schizogenous canals at root, stem, leaves and inflorescence, which a characteristic feature for this family [3]. So Apiaceae is cosmopolitan, and particularly abundant at the northern hemisphere, temperate regions and rare at tropics [4]. -

MESSAGE FROM HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE AZORES In a dispersed territory like the Azores, particularly in the smaller settlements, it is essential to encourage sustainable development since it is the route to economic progress, social cohesion, quality of life, and the preservation of natural heritage. In good time, the Government of the Azores has set inhabitants of São Jorge the challenge of jointly drawing up an application to UNESCO for the Fajãs de São Jorge to be designated a biosphere reserve. Right from the start, this process has been a very inclusive one. Indeed, only by being so can it succeed as it is up to individuals, communities and institutions to choose the foundations for their own development. The public authorities are responsible for establishing the conditions required for this development by enhancing knowledge of our existing natural and cultural assets, improving the conservation of these assets and fostering landmark projects that may serve to catalyse the aims of the Man and Biosphere (MAB) programme. The Fajãs de São Jorge are an example of a balanced but not always peaceful relationship between human beings and nature. As such, they offer clear evidence of perseverance and tenacity and are unique repositories of ways of life, landscapes and biodiversity that must be conserved and enhanced. The biosphere-reserve designation will confer international renown on São Jorge, placing the island and its fajãs in a network comprising over 600 sites around the world. It will also add economic value to the products and services produced there by allowing them to display a UNESCO seal of quality. -

Taksonların filogenetik ilişkilerini belirlemek için Heptaptera cinsine ait türler ile birlikte Prangos Lindl., Bilacunaria Pimenov & V.N.Tikhom., Cachrys L., Diplotaenia Boiss., Smyrniopsis Boiss., Petroedmondia Tamamsch., Lecokia DC., Hohenackeria Fisch. & C.A.Mey. ve Ekimia H.Duman & M.F.Watson cinslerine ait taksonlar dış grup olarak kullanıldı. Tür içi ve türler arasında varyasyon sınırları ile filogenetik ilişki düzeylerini belirlemek için farklı lokalitelerden toplanan örnekler üzerinde ISSR, AFLP ve ITS moleküler çalışmaları yapıldı. Ayrıca taksonların nümerik sınıflandırılmasında morfolojik, anatomik ve palinolojik veriler kullanıldı. Moleküler ve nümerik analizler için NTSYSpc 2.1., PAUP 4b-10 (Phylogenetic Analysis Using Parsimony) ve Minitab paket programları kullanıldı. To accommodate these unique early diverging members of the Apiaceae and to reflect their relationships, a new tribal classification system has become necessary. Many of the early diverging genera (herein referred to as the pro- toapioids) can readily be distinguished from the euapioids (the remaining apioids) by the presence of scattered druse crystals in the mesocarp. The major morphological discontinuity within the family, however, lies between the combined protoapioids and euapioids (representing an expanded Apioideae s.l., including the Saniculoideae) and the subfamilies Azorelloideae and Mackinlayoideae. -

Haploid karyotype formula is 4sm + 3m + 1T. The pollen morphology of T. elegans was examined under light and scanning electron microscope.
