This applies to any community. To contribute to society, a community must have something to contribute, the confidence it is welcome, and a healthy relationship with the society. 1 Representation: Toward More Effective Representation for Acadian and African Nova Scotians The Commission on Effective Electoral Representation of Acadian and African Nova Scotians The Acadian and African Nova Scotian communities have contributed greatly to this province and have much more to contribute. In our consultations, both communities spoke movingly of their desire to share their history and culture with the rest of society. This report suggests ways to strengthen their relationship with governments and the larger society, not only for their sake but for the sake of Nova Scotian society as a whole. We are all better off when everyone can contribute, and be recognized for their contributions. Reviewed by Karolyn Smardz Frost (Atkinson College School of Arts and Letters, York University) Published on H-Canada (July, 2008) Recreating the Black Refugees Blacks on the Border: The Black Refugees in British North America, 1815-1860 is a wonderful book. Far more than the sum of its parts, this slim volume focuses on several critical themes while expertly detailing the history of an important segment of the African Diaspora. Harvey Amani Whitfield, an assistant professor at the University of Vermont, demonstrates how African Americans from different parts of the United States, slave and free, who fought in the British forces in the War of 1812 came to found families, cultural institutions, and communities on Nova Scotia's inhospitable soil. He further details their subsequent development as a community and as a new, hybrid culture. This, Whitfield maintains, came about largely because of the hardships the so-called Black Refugees faced, not the least of which was the unrelenting and pervasively discriminatory treatment these brave and hardworking people encountered in their adopted Maritime home. The story of Nova Scotia's Black Refugees is generally less well known than that of the earlier migrants from the United States, the Black Loyalists.

    Impacts on Immigrants and People Designated as Visible Minorities 1 Delivering insight through data for a better Canada Impacts on Immigrants and People Designated as Visible Minorities Key messages: • Immigrants are disproportionately represented in jobs with greater exposure to COVID-19 – 34% of front- line/essential service workers identify as visible minorities (compared with 21% in other sectors). • Visible minorities are also more likely to work in industries worst affected by the pandemic, such as food and accommodation services – compounding health and economic risks. • Impact of COVID-19 on immigrants’ employment could reverse gains made in recent years to close the gap • Immigrants and visible minorities are more likely to report facing harassment, attacks, and stigma. • Immigrants are more concerned with their health and social consequences of the pandemic and are more likely to take precautions, but less likely to get a vaccine. 2 Delivering insight through data for a better Canada Evidence of differential rates of COVID among visible minorities in Canada – highlighting the need for more data on diverse populations Concerns regarding differential impacts of COVID have prompted calls for the collection of race-based health data in Canada. Currently, there is no requirement to collect race-based data in Canada related to COVID-19. In Ontario, Census data were used to analyze the distribution of COVID cases across neighbourhoods with higher vs lower concentration of visible minorities. However, the first father-daughter team to sit together in a legislative assembly did not happen in Canada until 1996. That is when Sue Edelman was elected to the 29th Yukon Legislative Assembly, joining her re-elected father, Ivan John “Jack” Cable. Mr. Cable moved to the North in 1970 after obtaining degrees in Chemical Engineering, a Master’s in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Laws in Ontario. He practiced law in Whitehorse for 21 years, and went on to serve as President of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, President of the Yukon Energy Corporation and Director of the Northern Canada Power Commission. He is also a founding member of the Recycle Organics Together Society and the Boreal Alternate Energy Centre. Mr. Cable’s entry into electoral politics came in 1992, when he successfully won the riding of Riverdale in East Whitehorse to take his seat in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. Ms. Edelman’s political presence had already been established by the time her father began his term as an MLA. In 1988, she became a Whitehorse city councillor, a position she held until 1994. In her 1991 reelection, she received more votes for her council seat than mayor Bill Weigand received. Following her time on city council, she was elected to the Selkirk Elementary School council. In the 1996 territorial election, she ran and won in the Riverdale South riding.

Learn more here. A piece by the Liberty Africa Writers highlights an enslaved Ghanaian woman named Breffu who led a revolt against the Danish army stationed in the West Indies in 1733. Read more about Breffu’s revolt here. A new podcast episode by Teaching Tolerance explores the relationship between the institution of slavery and indigenous populations in North America. The episode, "Indigenous Enslavement," is hosted by Hasan Kwame Jeffries and Meredith McCoy and features an interview with Christina Snyder who discusses how European invasion changed indigenous ideas about bondage. In her article, “A Downtown Jackson Alley Was Renamed After a Woman Who Escaped Slavery," Sarah Clinkscales details the renaming and transformation of a street in Jackson City, Michigan, to honor Emma Nichols, an enslaved woman who came to the city on the Underground Railroad.
