There are opportunities for all riding capabilities. Remember to follow the mountain bikers code (left) when biking. Public access easements Some of the following mountain bike rides travel along public access easements through private land. All easements are well marked with orange PVC marker poles. Please: • stay on the public easement track • leave gates as you find them • do not disturb stock—cycle slowly through livestock areas What to take The climate in Mackenzie and Waitaki Basins is traditionally very hot in summer and extremely cold in winter. New Zealand weather can change very rapidly so mountain bikers need to be prepared for a range of conditions. In addition to the items mentioned in the mountain bikers code, take sun block, sunglasses, and raincoat. Padded shorts and padded gloves Legend will reduce the effects of jarring on dry, bumpy tracks. Wear a helmet if you are going backcountry and take a topographic Car park Track map with a compass and GPS. Camping area Walking track Te Araroa Huts Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail Te Araroa is a walking trail from Cape Reinga to Bluff. 4WD track Parts of the trail are suitable for mountain biking. See www.teararoa.org.nz for more information. Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail This new cycle trail goes from Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park to Oamaru. Parts of the trail travel through public conservation land and are profiled in this brochure. The trail from Aoraki/Mount Cook through to Omarama was officially opened in 2013. Go to www.alps2ocean.com for further details. 2 3 Lake Tekapo The following two rides travel along river valleys north of Lake Tekapo. Both trips require a crossing of the Macaulay River which can be difficult to negotiate in periods of high rainfall and snowmelt. Mountain bikers can leave their car at the designated parking area at the end of Lilybank Road (prior to crossing Macaulay River). Maps: Topo50 BW17, BX17 Macaulay valley to Macaulay Hut Grade 2 Distance: 18 km one way, 200 m vertical A 4WD track travels along the Macaulay riverbed and tussock flats to Macaulay Hut. This hut is run by the Mackenzie Alpine Trust and sleeps 14 people. Donations are appreciated. Godley valley to Red Stag Hut Grade 2 Distance: 25 km one way, 160 m vertical A formed 4WD track travels along the eastern side of the Godley River valley. Follow a public road which is marked through Lilybank Station and then continue up the Godley valley on stony river flats. Red Stag Hut is run by the NZ Deer Stalkers Association ($5 p/p). Mountain bikers can continue up the Godley valley as far as Separation Stream, which is where the 4WD track finishes. 4 Track to Red Stag Hut 5 Te Kahui Kaupeka Cowans Hill Conservation Park – Richmond Trail Grade 2 Distance: 3.2 km circuit Grade 4 Distance: 13 km one way This well-formed track is signposted off State Richmond Trail is a fantastic mountain bike Highway 8 on the outskirts of Tekapo, just past Lilybank Road. ride and is part of Te Araroa. This paper discusses the complex cultural values and timeless quality of an iconic landmark - Aoraki/Mt Cook – which is located within the ever-changing Mackenzie Basin. It explores the various human values for the mountain and the surrounding regional landscape which has become iconic in its own right. The landscape has economic, environmental, scientific and social significance with intangible heritage values and connotations of sacred and sublime experiences of place. The paper considers Aoraki/Mt Cook as a ‘wilderness’ region that is also a focal point not only for local inhabitants but also for travellers sightseeing and recreating in the area. The paper also explores how cultural values for the mountain are interpreted to visitors in an attempt to convey a sense of ‘place’. Finally the Mackenzie Basin is discussed as a special ‘in-between’ place – that should be considered significant in its own right and not just as a ‘foreground’ or ‘frame’ for viewing the Southern Alps and Aoraki/Mt Cook itself. The Mackenzie has aesthetic scenic qualities that need careful management of activities such as recent attempts to establish industrialised, dairy factory farming (which does not complement more sustainable economic and social development in the region). Sympathetic projects such as the Nga Haerenga (Ocean to the Alps) cycle way are also under development to encourage activity within the landscape – in conflict with the dairying and other activities that impact negatively on the natural resources of the region.1 Introduction – cultural values for landscape and ‘place’ Aotearoa New Zealand is regarded by many as a ‘young country’ – the last indigenous populated country to be colonised by European cultures.

Omarama’s Police and Land Search and Rescue volunteers have been commended and thanked for their rescue of eight students caught out by weather conditions while tramping in the Huxley last month. Last week, in an article in the Police magazine ‘Ten One’, Southern District Inspector James Ure said the operation reflected" the great work some rural offic- ers undertook regularly" and, in this case, “with two Sar jobs happening simultaneously at opposite ends of the area”. He acknowledged the team’s “quality decision making and excellent work”. “There was a very high chance of serious risk or death occurring." He thanked all the volunteers "who put themselves in harm’s way that night". “The support ...provided to RCCNZ [ Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand] in coordinating this operation proved the value of local expertise and having a good volunteer group available.” About 11.30pm, Friday, October 18, barely two hours after returning home from searching for a man missing in the Waitaki River, near Duntroon, Senior Constable Nayland (Bean) Smith and the Omarama LandSar team were alerted that help was needed to find trampers in Huxley Forks -Hopkins Valley area. Eight students aged 20 to 25 had activated a personal locator beacon near the Blair Glacier above the Huxley River. Weather conditions had deteriorated, it was snowing, two in the group were show- ing signs of hypothermia, so the group found shelter, pitched tents and because of their circumstances, activated the personal locator beacon. LandSar commended continued... Bean called Tom Moore of Lake Ohau Station who told him there was about an inch of snow on the ground, low -lying cloud and light rain but the river should be fordable with a 4WD.
