In 2009, the first season for the Panthers, Varnesdeel guided DU to a 31-23 overall record. Varnesdeel took the reins of the Panthers softball team in 2009 after a five year stint as head soft- ball coach at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI. Varnesdeel also excelled as a two-sport athlete in basketball and softball at Aquinas. She helped lead the Saints to a national tournament appearance in both basketball and softball as a four year starter for both teams. She also earned all-conference and all-region selections during her softball career. At Aquinas, Varnesdeel, served as the assistant softball coach for one year before taking over head coaching duties for the Saints in 2003. While at Aquinas, Varnesdeel established the program as a small college softball powerhouse. As the leader of the Saints program, Varnesdeel led them to four Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships in 2003 and 2005-2007. She was named WHAC Coach of the Year in each of those years as well as Region VIII Coach of the Year in 2005, a year in which she led her team to the NAIA National Tournament. In her six years of coaching, Ronda has had 21 All-Conference Selections, 12 All-Region Selections, 1 2nd Team All-American, and has seen four of her players be named WHAC Player of the Year. Varnesdeel, who received her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Aquinas College, resides in Grand Rapids, MI with her husband Bernard Jr. and her son Bernard III. 2010 SOFTBALL | 5 2010 SEASON PREVIEW

The Lady Panthers will enter their second season of competition with high hopes after a successful, 31-24, inaugural season. Head Coach Ronda Varnesdeel and her staff welcome back eight starters from last year, and have brought in seven new faces from the junior college and high school ranks. The 2010 Panthers will be looking to take the next step in building not only a successful WHAC program but an NAIA one as well. After finishing 4th in the league a year ago, the Panthers are hoping to use a deeper pitching staff and a more balanced offensive attack to go along with a solid defensive core to move up in the standings. Leading the pitching staff after being named 1st Team All-WHAC a year ago is sophomore Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.). Despres led the team with a 14-9 overall record and 2.55 ERA, she held her opponents to a .191 batting average while posting 123 strikeouts. Joining Despres on the mound will be junior transfer Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.), sophomore Ali Daw- son (Galesburg, Mich.), and freshman captain Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.). Carpenter comes to DU from Lansing Community College where she earned All-American honors and led her team to a NJCAA D2 3rd place finish last year. Kristin Miedema Cole is an All-State pitcher who set a school-record 0.45 ERA while tailing 241 strikeouts. Returning seniors Sandi Seaman (St. Claire Shores, Mich.) and Nikki Aldrich (Robinson, Ill.) and sophomores Jodi Steenwyk (Sparta, Mich.) and Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.) all gained valuable experience in 2009. They will be joined by transfers Kelsey Egyhazi (Mishawaka, Ind.) and Jessica Fagan (Spokane, Wash.), along with freshman Ashlee Olsen (Rockford, Mich.), who red-shirted last year. With the added depth and experience the Pan- thers schedule is much tougher than a year ago.
