Idris Elba is Back as BBC’s ‘Luther’ Returns 11.29.2018 "Is this normal?" It's a question posed by DS Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku)-DCI John Luther's new partner in BBC's trailer for season five of Luther -- and the answer is yes. Starring Idris Elba and set to Britney Spears' "Toxic," the spot shows the detective investigating monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings that become increasingly more audacious and public. The trailer also reveals the return of Ruth Wilson's character, Alice Morgan, to the series after Luther thought she was dead. Dermot Crowley, Michael Smiley and Patrick Malahide also star, along with new addition Hermione Norris as psychiatrist Vivien Lake. According to the season five synopsis, Luther and Halliday are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption. But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the true face of evil, a reluctant Luther is forced to confront the unburied demons of his own recent past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect and who to sacrifice. His next move will have devastating consequences for those around him - and change him forever. The four-part season five of Luther will air as part of BBC One's Festive Season lineup, and then air on BBC America in 2019. Its premiere comes three years after season four debuted as a two-hour TV movie in 2015. Luther is produced by BBC Studios and created by Neil Cross. Executive producers are Elba for Green Door Pictures, Cross, Marcus Wilson and Hilary Salmon for BBC Studios and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for the BBC. READ MORE: Deadline, Entertainment Weekly.
