http://www.fnpf.org/news/scientific-research An observational study of Nusa Penidas Herpetofauna: A preliminary examination of the islands biodiversity Research completed on behalf of FNPF by Sami Asad, 28/10/2011 Abstract The Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) have recently been attempting to implement a biodiversity monitoring program through its field center on the island of Nusa Penida. At this moment there is little baseline data concerning the islands fauna and flora due to a lack of previous research. Therefore, an examination of the islands herpetofauna will not only provide records for species presence and biodiversity, but will also provide a preliminary assessment of habitat health and ecosystem viability. As such the purpose of this study is to carry out a brief habitat assessment of the island in relation to specific study areas and then survey said areas for herpetofauna thus providing a database for their presence and distribution, as well as providing a measure of biodiversity and habitat health. 1 http://www.fnpf.org/news/scientific-research Contents 1. In India, all the three living orders of reptiles have their representatives - Crocodylia (crocodiles), Testudines (turtles and tortoises) and Squamata (lizards and snakes). The diversified climate, varying vegetation and different types of soil in the country form a wide range of biotopes that support a highly diversified reptilian fauna. The Western Ghats, Eastern Himalaya, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are endowed with varied and unique reptilian fauna. The monumental works on Indian reptiles are, ‘The Reptiles of British India’ by Gunther (1864), ‘Fauna of British India - ‘Reptilia and Batrachia’ by Boulenger (1890) and Smith (1931, 1935, 1943). The work of Smith stood the test of time and forms the standard work on the subject. Conservation measures are therefore needed to assess and possibly reduce the impact of agricultural intensification on the vertebrate fauna, but limited effort has been put so far in understanding the effects of habitat conversion on reptile and amphibian communities. Here we study community composition, species richness and abundance of the herpetofauna of the densely farmed Jambi province, in central Sumatra. We sampled reptiles and amphibians in the lowland forests of the Harapan rainforest and in oil palm and rubber plantations through visual encounter surveys, pitfall trappings and audio recordings. We also measured various environmental features in every habitat to assess what are the best environmental predictors of herpetofaunal abundance and community composition. We found that abundance of reptiles and amphibians in oil palm can be surprisingly high, while none of the richness measures were consistently different between forest and plantations. -

In doing so, these investigations can provide complex insights into how fine-scale microevolutionary processes operating at the population level, translate into the large-scale macroevolutionary biodiversity patterns we see in evolutionary radiations. Due to the complex geography, historical climatic fluctuations, and remarkably high concentrations of land vertebrate biodiversity, Southeast Asia is an ideal place to investigate these processes. Lizards of the genus Eutropis represent one of the more recognizable radiations of lizards in Southeast Asia, due to their high abundances, broad geographic distribution, and generalized external morphology. However, their evolutionary history has remained enigmatic due to their highly conserved morphology and a lack of dense population sampling of individuals and species across their range. -

Consequently, it has become increasingly clear that species diversity has been underestimated in many evolutionary radiations. With the use of an integrative approach, we examined the genetic and morphological diversity present in a nearly endemic Philippine radiation of Eutropis. Results demonstrated that current taxonomy does not reflect evolutionary history and that in many cases, morphological divergence has become decoupled from genetic divergence. As a consequence, species diversity is significantly underestimated. Here, we rectify the major taxonomic problems present in Philippine Eutropis by providing formal descriptions for eight new species. Three of the four new species in the E. multicarinata species complex are sympatric with (and have long been confused with) previously described subspecies (which we also elevate to full species here). -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Skinks are usually grouped in a single family, Scincidae (1,579 species) representing one-quarter of all lizard species. Oth- er large lizard families, such as Gekkonidae (s.l.) and Iguanidae (s.l.), have been partitioned into multiple families in recent years, based mainly on evidence from molecular phylogenies. Subfamilies and informal suprageneric groups have been used for skinks, defined by morphological traits and supported increasingly by molecular phylogenies. Recently, a seven- family classification for skinks was proposed to replace that largely informal classification, create more manageable taxa, and faciliate systematic research on skinks. Those families are Acontidae (26 sp.), Egerniidae (58 sp.), Eugongylidae (418 sp.), Lygosomidae (52 sp.), Mabuyidae (190 sp.), Sphenomorphidae (546 sp.), and Scincidae (273 sp.). Representatives of 125 (84%) of the 154 genera of skinks are available in the public sequence databases and have been placed in molecular phylogenies that support the recognition of these families. However, two other molecular clades with species that have long been considered distinctive morphologically belong to two new families described here, Ristellidae fam. nov. (14 sp.) and Ateuchosauridae fam. nov.
