Botti revealed that the plan for the three-year-old had been to wait for an autumn campaign, but instead his owners Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith have decided to sell, and he left Botti’s Prestige Place yard on Saturday. The trainer was philosophical about the move and said: “We are Wales’s sad that he has been sold abroad and he would have been a nice horse to keep in the yard. I think he will adapt well to Hong Kong. He is just the type of horse that does well there, a miler who I think will get ten furlongs well too. I thought he was only going one way and he would improve as a four-year-old. He won the German Guineas and I think he is unexposed as a three-year-old and he is quite scopey, so he can only improve with time.” Explaining why the Attalea Partnership-bred chesnut had not

BONDE SECURES DAUGHTER OF HIS GR.1-WINNING MILLIONAIRE TIGER The second edition of the Barretts Select Yearling Sale at Del Mar was on par with the inaugural session last year. Marginally up on last year, the aggregate rose from $1,629,000 for 44 horses to $1,635,000 for the same number. The action was hotter at the higher end with three lots selling for six figures compared to joint top lots of $90,000 last year, while there were also two lots that failed to make six-figure reserves this year. The average rose from $37,023 to $37,159 and the median dipped from $32,500 to $27,500. Top honours went to a filly from the first crop of the multiple Gr.1-winning millionaire Smiling Tiger (Lot 68). She was purchased by the sire’s former trainer Jeff Bonde from Woodbridge Farm for $130,000. She is a half-sister to the Stakes winner Kelly’s Princess (Western Fame; dam of the Stakes-placed Top Drawer) and three Stakes-placed horses, out of the winning Pentelicus mare Chanceofalifetime. Bonde also bought a son of Kafwain (Lot 9) for $15,000 from Willow Tree Farm. He is out of the juvenile winner Kaloula (Peace Rules) and is from the family of the Gr.3 Longacres Derby winner and sire Protect Yourself (Lord Rebeau). The highest-priced colt was from the final crop of Tribal Rule, who died aged 18 of a heart attack in 2014. Consigned by Mary Knight, the leading consignor with seven lots selling for $252,000, Lot 16 was knocked down to a bid of $115,000 from trainer Dan Hendricks, who was acting as agent for Super Horse. The bay is out of the juvenile scorer Maralago (Thunder Gulch), who is a half-sister to the Stakes winner Tricky Six (Saratoga Six) and is a daughter of the dual Gr.3 winner Tricky Squaw (Clever Trick).

BEVERLEY BULLET, 5F, 3YO+, BEVERLEY Beverley has struggled over the years with its Listed races, but this go-ahead track has one that seems to fit and there was a cracking line-up that resulted in a blanket finish. It was the lowest- rated animal who won, however, though Alpha Delphini, by Mickley Stud’s Captain Gerrard, a half-brother to Tangerine Trees (Mind Games), is really coming to himself at the age of five, improving with age like his brother, who took this race before going on to win the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye for the same trainer, Bryan Smart. Even the ever-optimistic Smart is not going to follow that course, but he could well head for a Gr.3 this year, with every chance of capturing one in this form. He could still find more improvement next year, too.
