18 2006-07 UCONN WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUTA TEAM EFFORT 2006-07 University of Connecticut Women’s Cross Country/Track and Field ACADEMIC SUPPORT The University of Connecticut is committed to each track member, and all of its student-athletes, as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of the players college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is the primary concern. The University’s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Participation in athletics is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one’s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complementary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. The University realizes that the track team and all student-athletes, due to their academic involvement, are required to commit a large percentage of their personal time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for its intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) constantly assists all student-athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as a liaison to the academic faculty, the Division of Athletics, and the student-athlete. John Miceli In serving as a liaison between the Connecticut student-athletes and University faculty and staff, the CPIA counselors also provide assistance in securing appropriate support services available with the University. These include orientation for student- athletes, supervised study halls, individual tutors and tutorial centers (an English/Writing Center, Math Center and Reading Center), and learning skills seminars. SPORTS MEDICINE The department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for the track student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for the student-athlete. Physician coverage is provided by Jeffrey Anderson, M.D., the Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician Thomas Trojian, M.D. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include Edward Collins, M.D. of the Connecticut Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Willimantic, Dr. Michael Joyce of the Orthopedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury, Barry Messinger, M.D. of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery in Manchester and Robert Arciero, M.D. of the University of Connecticut Health Center Department of Orthopaedics in Farmington. Dr. Jeff The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise Anderson, M.D. scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of all student-athletes. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have 24-hour access to the finest medical support and quality health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective. ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

Mackenzie Sparks STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING The strength and conditioning program for University of Connecticut is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. UConn track members have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn student-athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky student-athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn track athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength-training program. Maureen Butler supervises the strength and conditioning program for each individual track athlete for training all year long. Each program can be manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific testing is done to each track athlete to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning and Maureen flexibility. These tests provide the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each player. Butler

2006-07 UCONN WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK2006 UCONN FIELD AND HOCKEY FIELD 27 UNIVERSITYTHE STUDENT IN STUDENT-ATHLETE. OF CONNECTICUT 2006-07 University2006 of University Connecticut of ConnecticutWomen’s Cross Field Country/Track Hockey and Field In The Classroom

The University of Connecticut women’s track and fi eld and cross country teams has been a success not only in competition, but in the classroom as well. The cross country team has been named an NCAA Division I All- Academic team for the past three years, while the track team has earned that distinction for the past two. The main criteria for the award is that the cumulative grade point average for all student-athletes on the Squad List for indoor and/or outdoor track and cross country must be 3.00 or higher. This past season, senior Jillian Sul- livan, junior Tamara Highsmith and sophomore Jessi Foreman were recognized as members of the All-Aca- demic team, due to their GPA’s being over the needed 3.25 to qualify. The program attributes its success to its work ethic and support staff. The team itself devised a plan to help enhance academic performance and promote team unity through organized learning groups. The plan is Jillian Sullivan, Tamara Highsmith and Jessi Foreman were fl exible, low-impact and positive. All historical feedback named members of the NCAA Division I All-Academic team from programs like this have indicated it is successful at for achieving over a 3.25 GPA in the classroom and for achieving the objective set forth. Also helping to achieve their high accomplishments on the track and in the field. the team’s objective are its support staff, including John Miceli of the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes. CPIA is a unit within the Division of Academic Af- fairs with the primary goal of assisting student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in intercollegiate athletics. As academic affairs offi cers, CPIA counselors function as liasons between the athletic and academic communities. Counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students’ successful transition into college life by instituting academic and social support programs, including, but not limited to, Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial and Life Skills Programs. In The Community

The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fi elds and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience, as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. The women’s track and fi eld/cross country teams have been active in several community service activities, including working a drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross that raised a total of $30,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina earlier this year. The team has also been individually recognized for its efforts as Leah Williams, a recent graduate in 2006, was chosen to represent UConn at the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference. Each school is permitted to send one representative to the event and a total of 324 student-athletes out of 1,166 who were nominat- ed took part in last year’s conference. The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss is- UConn student-athletes, including Mandela Graves- sues that may affect them on their campuses and in Fulgham and Alyssa Evering, volunteered their time to their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communica- help children at an afterschool program in Hartford, tion, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The Conn. leadership conference also promotes better commu- nication among student-athletes, coaches, administra- tors, faculty and communities. The fi ve-day conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group. The conference is an outreach of the NCAA’s highly-successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Pro- gram. Criteria for selection include the student-athletes’ demonstrated ability and strong desire to be a leader and the student-athletes’ potential to benefi t signifi cantly from a leadership development experience. In order to be eligible for the conference, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing, and must have athletic eli- gibility remaining for the following academic year.
