D46 STUDENTS ARE EXPLORING COMPUTER SCIENCE!

Dear Families, In computer lab, we are participating in the Hour of Code. We are using a variety of sources to introduce our students to computer science. Learning to code can be fun, collaborative, and creative! Students learn: • basic mouse skills • basic blockly computer programming • higher-order thinking, logic and multi-step problem solving • creativity and perseverance Our resources allow our kindergarten through fourth grade students to explore the world of coding. The lessons can take the form of self-guided and self- paced tutorials, “unplugged “activities that require no computer at all or robotics

Some of the vocabulary you may start hearing your students use: • Algorithm – a set of ordered directions for a computer to follow • Bug - a problem/mistake in the algorithm (code/directions) • Debug – fix a problem in the algorithm (code/directions) Did you know that according to Code.org 71% of all new jobs in STEM are in computing or that only 8% of STEM graduates major in computer science? The technology and problem solving skills your children are using can be built upon for future learning and jobs that haven’t even been created yet. We encourage you to talk with your student about what they are learning and spend some time coding together.

Ellen L. Correll Superintendent [email protected] Dear Parents and Guardians,

Community Consolidated School District 46’s Curriculum must include Erin’s Law, an annual state mandated, age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention program for students Pre-K through 12th grade. Governor Pat Quinn signed Erin’s Law in January 2013.

It is estimated that one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused by the time they are eighteen. It is also estimated that about 90 percent of the abusers are known to the child and include relatives, neighbors, babysitters, and family acquaintances.

Erin’s Law requires our schools to educate students on safe touches and unsafe touches; safe secrets and unsafe secrets; and how to “get away and tell today.” Children will also learn how to recognize child sexual abuse, and reduce their vulnerability and encourage them to report abuse.

The curriculum will vary from grade to grade, however it will be developmentally appropriate per grade level. In Pre-School, students receive developmentally appropriate lessons presented by the Zacharias Center. In grades K-4, students will watch a pre-approved video, titled, “It’s Your Body: You’re In Charge,” that meets the requirements of Erin’s Law. If you would like to preview this video, please contact your building administrator.

For grades K-4, videos will be shown to students the week of January 22nd.

For more information regarding Erin’s Law please visit: http://www.isbe.state.il.us/reports/erins-law-final0512.pdf

Please contact your school administration if you have any questions or concerns about Erin’s Law.

Sincerely,

Amanda Woodruff Teaching, Learning & Assessment Coordinator

Ellen L. Correll Superintendent [email protected] Estimados padres y tutores,

If schools are closed…

CCSD 46 will notify families by 5:00 AM when schools will be closed due to extreme cold or snow. The district makes every effort to notify parents as soon as possible. Superintendents from area districts start communicating with each other as soon as the weather reports start to look threatening. The superintendents generally try to reach a consensus on school closures. Several districts share bus services or house students from communities across the county. Discussing the decision to close schools with each other is also helpful in considering all of the scenarios and possible outcomes. For questions or concerns related to CCSD 46’s emergency closings or inclement weather guide, please contact Ellen Correll, Superintendent of Schools.

Car Riders/Parking- Children should arrive at school between 7:50 and 8:00. When dropping off or picking up your child in the turnaround, please stay in your car, pull-up as far as possible, and form two lanes. If you drop off or pick up your child at the main doors, please park your car in the visitor lot and walk your child between the school’s entrance and your vehicle. There is no parking in the turnaround during or after school hours. It serves as an emergency lane and is for moving vehicles only. Please do not block the handicap parking areas or the parking lot entrances.

Bus Riders- Please review the bus rules and procedures (available on our school website) with your children. At bus stops, children should stay off the road and remain on the sidewalk while waiting for the bus.

Visitor procedures- All visitors must enter through the main entrance only. The interior main doors will be locked when school is in session, so visitors will be “buzzed in” and then enter the main office. Upon entry, please sign in, have your ID scanned, and wear a visitor badge. We use a computer identification system for all visitors. Please remember, you will need a valid state ID to enter the building. When you leave, stop by the office and sign out.
