THE LESSONS

The Reading: Isaiah 49:1-6

Listen to me, O coastlands, and give attention, you peoples from afar. The LORD called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name. He made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away.

2 And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the LORD, and my recompense with my God.” And now the LORD says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him— for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, and my God has become my strength— he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” (ESV)

Psalm 71:1-11. Read in unison.

1 In you, O Lord, have I put my trust; * let me never be put to shame. 2 Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness; * incline your ear to me and save me. 3 Be my rock and my refuge, where I may always return; * you have promised to help me, for you are my stronghold and my fortress. 4 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the ungodly, * out of the hand of the unrighteous and the cruel. 5 For you, O Lord God, are the one I long for; * you are my hope, even from my youth. 6 Through you have I been upheld ever since I was born; * you took me out of my mother’s womb; my praise shall be always of you. 7 I have become a portent to many; * but you are my refuge and my strength. 8 O let my mouth be filled with your praise, * that I may sing of your glory all the day long. 9 Cast me not away in the time of old age; * forsake me not when my strength fails me. 10 For my enemies speak against me, and those who lie in wait for my life take counsel together. * They say, “God has forsaken him; pursue him and take him, for there is none to deliver him.” 11 Go not far from me, O God; * my God, make haste to help me.

The Reading: Hebrews 12:1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

3 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our , who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. (ESV)

Hymn: “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us”

The Gospel: Mark 11:15-19

All standing, the Deacon or Priest reads the Gospel, first saying

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

And they came to Jerusalem. And Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.” And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. And when evening came they went out of the city. (ESV)

After the Gospel, the Reader says

The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON The Rev. Dr. John Yates, II

Hymn: “He Giveth More Grace”

NICENE CREED

Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

4 On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE OF THE PEOPLE

Let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Almighty and everliving God, we are taught by your holy Word to offer prayers and supplications and to give thanks for all people. We humbly ask you mercifully to receive our prayers. Inspire continually the universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all who confess your holy Name may agree in the truth of your holy Word, and live in unity and godly love.

Silence

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer.

We pray that you will lead the nations of the world in the way of righteousness; and so guide and direct their leaders, especially Joseph, our President, that your people may enjoy the blessings of freedom and peace. Grant that our leaders may impartially administer justice, uphold integrity and truth, restrain wickedness and vice, and protect true and virtue.

Silence

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer.

Give grace, heavenly Father, to all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, and especially to your servants Foley, our Archbishop, John, our Bishop, and all the of this Diocese, that by our life and teaching, we may proclaim your true and life-giving Word, and rightly and duly administer your holy Sacraments. And to all your people give your heavenly grace, that with reverent and obedient hearts they may hear and receive your holy Word, and serve you in holiness and righteousness all the days of their lives.

Silence

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer.

Prosper, we pray, all those who proclaim the Gospel of your kingdom throughout the world, and strengthen us to fulfill your great commission, making disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey all that you have commanded.

5 Silence

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer.

We ask you in your goodness, O Lord, to comfort and sustain all who in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity, especially those whom we name.

Silence

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer.

We remember before you all your servants who have departed this life in your faith and fear, especially those whom we name, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we ask you to give us grace to follow the good examples of all your saints, that we may share with them in your heavenly kingdom.

Silence

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father grant these our prayers for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION OF SIN

Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God.

Silence

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Bishop stands and says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COMFORTABLE WORDS

The Bishop may then say one or more of the following sentences, first saying

6 Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2

RENEWAL OF ORDINATION VOWS

The Bishop addresses those who are to renew their vows. They stand facing the Bishop who says:

Dear friends, the ministry we share is none other than the sacrificial ministry of Christ, who gave himself up to death on the Cross for the salvation of the world. By his glorious resurrection he has opened for us the way of everlasting life. By the gift of the Holy Spirit he shares with us the riches of his grace.

We are called to proclaim his death and resurrection, to administer the Sacraments of the New Covenant, which he sealed with his blood on the Cross, and to care for his people in the power of the Spirit.

Bishop Do you here, in the presence of Christ and his Church, renew your commitment to Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord? Answer I do.

Bishop Do you renew your commitment to your ministry, under the pastoral direction of your bishop? Answer I do.

Bishop Do you reaffirm your promise to give yourself to prayer and study? Answer I do.

Bishop Do you reaffirm your promise so to minister the Word of God and the Sacraments of the New Covenant that the reconciling love of Christ may be known and received? Answer I do.

Bishop Do you reaffirm your promise to be a faithful servant of all those committed to your care, patterning your life in accordance with the teachings of Christ, so that you may be a wholesome example to your people? Answer I do.

The Bishop then makes this affirmation

And now, as your Bishop, I, too, before God and you, rededicate myself and reaffirm the promises that I made when I was ordained. I ask your prayers.

Bishop and Clergy

May the Lord who has given us the will to do these things, give us also the grace and power to perform them.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

7 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

CONSECRATION OF OILS FOR HOLY BAPTISM AND FOR HEALING The Bishop says Dear friends in Christ: In the beginning, the Spirit of God hovered over the creation; and, throughout history, God, by the gift of the Holy Spirit, has empowered his people to serve him. As a sign of that gift, the priests and of Israel were anointed with oil, and our Lord Jesus was Himself anointed with the Holy Spirit at His Baptism. At Baptism, Christians are likewise anointed by that same Spirit to empower them for God’s service. And in the Scriptures we are taught to use oil and the laying on of hands for the healing of the sick. Let us now set apart this oil to be a sign of the work of the Holy Spirit.

The Bishop then places a hand on the vessels of oil and prays

Most holy God, whose only Son was anointed by the Holy Spirit to be the Savior and servant of all, we pray you to bless and consecrate this oil to represent the outpouring of your grace, that it might be to us the sweet fragrance of Christ. May it strengthen and sustain us that we might resist the sins of the world, the lure of the flesh, and the assaults of the devil. May those who are sealed with it in Baptism share in the royal priesthood of Jesus Christ; by it, may you bless and heal those who are infirm or in need, in body, soul, and spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

THE BLESSING

The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and , and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.

Hymn: “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”
