Your generosity made a major difference in the lives of many Bridgeport Hospital patients and their families during the past year. Your support helped us improve the quality and safety of care and provide a positive experience during more than 8,000 patient admissions, 270,000 outpatient visits and 84,000 Emergency Department visits. Some of our recent service enhancements include: • Installation of the newest-generation da Vinci Xi robotic surgery system, which brings unprecedented safety and precision to a variety of minimally invasive surgical procedures • Innovative advances in cardiac care such as LINQ, the world’s smallest implantable heart monitor, and the Lariat procedure, which dramatically reduces stroke risk in many patients with atrial fibrillation • A new patient reception and education center in the Joel E. Smilow Heart Institute • An expanded MedEase ambulatory medicine unit and Gyn-Oncology and Urogynecology specialty clinics • Establishment of a Smilow Care Center at our outpatient campus in Trumbull, which makes the world- class specialty care of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven more accessible to Fairfield County residents • Groundbreaking for a new 20,000-square-foot medical office building at the Trumbull campus, to open in early 206, that will house expanded cancer services, including a healing garden made possible by the Norma F. Pfriem Foundation, ambulatory surgery and other services • Expanded cardiac surgery, hepatology, surgical oncology and vascular surgery services made possible by our relationship with Yale School of Medicine • Together with our partners in Yale New Haven Health System, North Shore-LIJ Health and Med-Trans, the launch of SkyHealth, a new air ambulance service to facilitate patient transfers between hospitals Much of this activity results from your ongoing philanthropic support of the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation. Without this support, success stories such as those on the following pages could not be told. Stories such as: • Shaun Amberg and Masha Watson, whose ongoing commitment to the Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers makes it possible for patients to regain full, active lives through the centers’ services • Richard Boas, MD, who established the Fay Fund to help less fortunate patients with non-medical needs • Tom and Patti Keegan, whose dedication to the Norma Pfriem Breast Center enables so many women to complete the journey to breast cancer recovery • John and Karen Paloian, whose Gary S. Porges Endowment helps needy patients with heart problems afford critical tests On behalf of everyone at Bridgeport Hospital, thank you again for helping us accomplish our mission of providing the safest, most patient- and family-centered care. With you as partners, we look forward to achieving even more in the days and years ahead. William M. Jennings Stephen M. • Cubed Circle Newsletter 241 – Consistency Is Hard
Cubed Circle Newsletter 241 – Consistency is Hard As many of probably noticed, we have been posting late and sporadically for the last month. This was, obviously, not our intention, but with the second semester eating into my free time, staying up to date is a tall order. Even without the newsletter itself seeing weekly publication the site has still remained up to date on a weekly basis, thanks primarily to co-author Ben Carass, as well as guest writers Paul Cooke and Leslie Lee III. But, the newsletter has survived for well over 241 weeks, and will hopefully thrive in the years to come. I have attempted to make provisions for publishing related tasks which should minimize the risk of major delays (obviously there will be some regular delays, as this late issue can attest), but we have some fail safes in place in order to keep this to a minimum. With all of this said, we have a great issue for everyone this week with Paul Cooke discussing the Pro-Wrestling Only Greatest Wrestler Ever project and his personal experience with the poll, Ben covers the news including tons of results from Japan and the Lesnar USADA violation, the Mixed Bag returns with a look at comedy wrestling, Ricochet/Ospreay, and a potential WWE match of the year -- plus Ben also looks at last Sunday's Battleground show and the first RAW of the brand split (a very good show). Also, for those unaware, we now have an official Twitter account @CubedCircleWres allowing the banger to unprecedented highs at @BenCarass and @RyanClingman.

Catherine Johnson TELE-BRANDING IN TVIII The network as brand and the programme as brand In the era of TVIII, characterised by deregulation, multimedia conglomeration, expansion and increased competition, branding has emerged as a central industrial practice. Focusing on the case of HBO, a particularly successful brand in TVIII, this paper argues that branding can be understood not simply as a feature of television networks, but also as a characteristic of television programmes. It begins by examining how the network as brand is constructed and conveyed to the consumer through the use of logos, slogans and programmes. The role of programmes in the construction of brand identity is then complicated by examining the sale of programmes abroad, where programmes can be seen to contribute to the brand identity of more than one network. The paper then goes on to examine programme merchandising, an increasingly central strategy in TVIII. Through an analysis of different merchandising strategies the paper argues that programmes have come to act as brands in their own right, and demonstrates that the academic study of branding not only reveals the development of new industrial practices, but also offers a way of understanding the television programme and its consumption by viewers in a period when the texts of television are increasingly extended across a range of media platforms. TVIII, at least at this juncture, must be considered the age of brand marketing. (Rogers et al. 2002, p. 48) ‘Branding’ has emerged as a central concern of the television industry in the age of digital convergence. (Caldwell 2004, p. 305) New Review of Film and Television Studies Vol.

  • TENTH ANNUAL CHARITY DAY SEPTEMBER 11, 2014 • NEW YORK Thursday, September 11, 2014 Marked BGC’S Tenth Annual Charity Day
TENTH ANNUAL CHARITY DAY SEPTEMBER 11, 2014 • NEW YORK Thursday, September 11, 2014 marked BGC’s Tenth Annual Charity Day. BGC Partners, together with its affiliate Cantor Fitzgerald, raised approximately $12 million globally on this single day for dozens of charities around the world. To date, Charity Day has raised approximately $113 million for hundreds of charitable causes. Held in commemoration of the 658 Cantor employees and 61 Eurobrokers employees lost in the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks, each anniversary is a poignant occasion for us. Every year, BGC Partners and our affiliate Cantor Fitzgerald, in conjunction with the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, strive to turn a tragic day into one that is positive and uplifting by distributing 100% of our global revenues on Charity Day to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund and dozens of charities around the world. The Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, initially created to assist families of Cantor employees who were lost on 9/11, has since broadened its mission to provide aid to victims of terrorism, natural disasters, emergencies, direct service charities and wounded members of the military. We are thankful to all our celebrity guests who joined us in New York on Charity Day and raised money for tremendous causes. In addition, many thanks to our clients, brokers and charities whose commitment, support, enthusiasm and graciousness made Charity Day a spectacular success. 1 HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007 Submitted by Gareth Andrew James to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, January 2011. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.
