  • Sustainable Vapor Intrusion Controls – Designing an Effective Passive System
Sustainable Vapor Intrusion Controls – Designing an Effective Passive System James R. Ash, Mark C. Ensign, William F. Simons GEI Consultants, Inc., 400 Unicorn Park Drive, Woburn MA 01801 Abstract Under certain conditions and with the appropriate design, passive systems can be successful in mitigating the vapor intrusion pathway and have the advantage of being greener and more sustainable over the long term. A successful passive vapor intrusion control system is likely to require more extensive construction efforts, particularly for an existing building, because the system requires comprehensive sealing of all vapor intrusion pathways. These efforts are likely to result in higher initial capital costs and short-term disruption to building users, but these elements may be offset by lower long-term operation and maintenance efforts and avoidance of aesthetic and other impacts on property owners that may be inherent in continuous operation of an external fan-based system. These reduced operation and maintenance requirements and impacts are also likely to make passive systems preferable to the building owners, particularly in residential applications. Documenting the effectiveness of these systems is likely to rely initially on indoor air sampling, but long-term monitoring can be limited to confirming that the systems remain intact. In this paper, we describe some of the conditions and design requirements for implementing successful passive vapor intrusion control systems at both residential and commercial buildings. We also present monitoring data collected at residential properties and a commercial office building where passive systems were successfully implemented. INTRODUCTION Under certain conditions and with the appropriate design, passive systems can be successful in mitigating the vapor intrusion pathway and have the advantage of being greener and more sustainable over the long term.

  • Acer Rubrum ‘Red Sunset’ ‘Red Sunset’ Red Maple1 Edward F
Fact Sheet ST-47 November 1993 Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’ ‘Red Sunset’ Red Maple1 Edward F. Gilman and Dennis G. Watson2 INTRODUCTION ‘Red Sunset’ and ‘October Glory’ have proven to be the best cultivars of Red Maple for the south (Fig. 1). ‘Red Sunset’ has strong wood and is a vigorous, fast-grower, reaching a height of 50 feet with a spread of 25 to 35 feet. Trees are often seen shorter in the southern part of its range unless located on a wet site. This tree is preferred over Red Maple, Silver Maple or Boxelder when a fast-growing maple is needed, and will take on a pyramidal or oval silhouette. The newly emerging red flowers and fruits signal that spring has come. They appear in December and January in Florida, later in the northern part of its range. Leaves retain an attractive high gloss throughout the growing season. The seeds of ‘Red Sunset’ Red Maple are quite popular with squirrels and birds. • Aloha Chemical Sunset Properties of Solutions SCIENTIFIC
Aloha Chemical Sunset Properties of Solutions SCIENTIFIC Introduction Watch as the sun sets over a chemical reaction! The reaction of sodium thiosulfate with hydrochloric acid produces ele- mental sulfur, which precipitates from solution to form a colloidal mixture. When the reaction is carried out on an over- head projector, the light from the projector is scattered by the colloidal sulfur particles and produces a multicolored chemi- cal sunset. Concepts • Colloid • Light scattering • Tyndall effect Materials Hydrochloric acid solution, 1 M, HCl, 8 mL Petri dish, 100 × 15 mm Sodium thiosulfate solution, 0.2 M, Na2S2O3, 14 mL Overhead projector Graduated cylinder, 25-mL Scissors Paper Tropical sunset cutout Safety Precautions Hydrochloric acid is moderately toxic by ingestion and inhalation and is corrosive to eyes and skin. Sodium thiosulfate solution is a body tissue irritant. The sulfur produced in this reaction has low toxicity but may be a skin and mucous membrane irritant. The smell of the sulfur may become irritating—transfer the Petri dish to the hood when the demonstration is over. The reaction also produces sulfur dioxide gas, which is a skin and eye irritant. Wear chemical splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, and a chemical-resistant apron. Please review current Material Safety Data Sheets for additional safety, handling, and disposal information. Preparation Prepare 0.2 M sodium thiosulfate solution by dissolving 5.0 g of sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate, Na2S2O35H2O, in 100 mL of distilled or deionized water. Procedure 1. Trace a circle the size of the Petri dish on a piece of opaque paper and cut out the circle to provide a “frame” for the chemical sun- set (Figure 1a).
