To aid the considerable task, we employed high-throughput DNA barcoding for the rough sorting of all material and for tentative species identifications, where possible. We report the preliminary species list of 190, the detection of four new exotic species (Argyresthia pruniella, Dichelia histrionana, Paraswammerdamia lutarea, and Prays fraxinella), and the potential discovery of two cryptic species. We describe the magnitude of assistance that barcoding presents for faunal inventories, from reducing specialist time to facilitating the detection of native and exotic species at low density. ____________________________________________________________________________ Ateyyat This project seeks to provide greater coherence for the biocontrol knowledge system for regulators and researchers; create an open access information source for biocontrol re- search of agricultural pests in California, which will stimulate greater international knowl- edge sharing about agricultural pests in Mediterranean climates; and facilitate the exchange of information through a cyberinfrastructure among government regulators, and biocontrol entomologists and practitioners. Five of these, Ptycholoma lecheana (LINNAEUS, 1758), Cacoecimorpha pronubana HÜBNER, 1799, Eudemis profundana ([DENIS & SCHIFFERMÜLLER], 1775), Hedya salicella (LINNAEUS, 1758), and Epinotia demarniana (FISCHER VON RÖSLERSTAMM, 1840), are new to the Azerbaijan fauna; two of them (Cacoecimorpha pronubana and Epinotia demarniana) are new to the Caucasian fauna, as well. Leafrollers were collected in the larval and pupal stage from March to September on their food plants according to the sampling methods. The early stages were kept in the laboratory until adult emergence, after which they were killed and pinned. Data on newly recorded leafrollers are given in the text including species name, collection area, coordinates of area, data of collection, food plants on which they were recorded, and sex of specimen(s). Key words: Tortricids, damage, host plants, Azerbaijan, fauna. Introduction Tortricidae, commonly known as leafrollers, are one of the most diverse families in the Microlepidoptera. The number of leafroller species in countries bordering Azerbaijan differs among the adjacent regions: 469 species are recorded from Turkey (KOÇAK & KEMAL 2012), 145 species from Iran (KOÇAK & KEMAL 2012), and 139 species from Georgia (ESARTIA 1988). -

In this study, two species of Olethreutinae: Hedya corni Oku, 1974 and Epinotia salicicolana Kuznetzov, 1968, are reported for the first time from Korea. Our records of Hedya corni are based on three specimens in both sexes from Islands Bogildo and Geojedo. The Korean record of Epinotia salicicolana is based on one male specimen from Muan-gun. The present records of Hedya corni represent the first occurrence out of Japan. Hedya corni is similar to Hedya inornata (Walsingham) but differs from the latter in having the reddish brown forewings. Epinotia salicicolana is similar to Epinotia solandriana (Linnaeus) but differs from the latter in having the smaller dorsal patch on the forewing. Habitus and genitalia of the two olethreutine species are illustrated and briefly described. Their bionomics and distribution are summarized. With our new records, the species numbers of the Korean Hedya and Epinotia are increased to 11 and 23, respectively. Feeding with buds as imago and/or larvae these insects make damages manifesting in buds drying, disturbing normal development of leaves and flowers, reduction in the yield and quality of fruits. Exeminations were carried out in apple orchards in three locations on the region of East Sarajevo. Two extensive plantations over 40 years old were situated in the localities of Kasindo and Pale, while one intensive and youngish orchard with sorts Idared, Jonagold and Gold Delicious, was in the locality of Kula. Presence and harmfulness of buds pests was observed in the period of 2007- 2008. Seven species of harmful insects have been reared and determined on apple leaf and flower buds. Six Lepidopterous species were from the families Tortricidae and Geometridae, and one Coleopterous species was from the family of Curculionidae. Torticidae was represented with four species: Hedya nubiferana Haworth, Spilonota (Tmetocera) ocellana Fab., Archips podana Scopoli and Pandemis heperana Den.et Schiff. Two Geometrid species were Hibernia defoliaria Clerck and Cheimatobia brummata Linne. Only one beetle from the family Curculionidae was Anthonomus pomorum Linne. Showcasing Use of Spinosad and Mating Distruption Products for Controlling Leafrollers (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in an Organic Apple Orchard in Latvia
Short Contributions 129 Showcasing use of spinosad and mating distruption products for controlling leafrollers (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in an organic apple orchard in Latvia. E. Jākobsone, J. Gailis1 and L. Ozoliņa-Pole2 Abstract Lack of pest control options is a limiting factor in organic apple production in Latvia. At the moment, there are only two products for controlling arthropod pests that are allowed to be used in organic apple production. A large plot demonstration trial was set up in an organic apple orchard to showcase additional plant protection products that are commonly used in organic orchards elsewhere in European Union. The orchard assessed had a history of heavy pre- flowering infestations of Hedya nubiferana (Haworth). Spinosad (Tracer 480, Dow AgroScience) and a tortricid mating disruption product (RAK 3+4, BASF) were used. Lepidopteran larval feeding damage before flowering and flight activity of H. nubiferana, Archips podana (Scopoli) and Archips rosana (Linnaeus) were assessed. Larval feeding rate was lower in demonstration plot where spinosad was used pre flowering than in control plot were azadirachtin was used at the same time. Mating disruption product, even though not marketed towards control of H. nubiferana, caused almost complete pheromone trap exclusion for H. nubiferana males in treated area. Catches of A. podana were insignificant in all orchard and there were no A. rosana registered in the orchard during observations, regardless of the ample supply of alternate host plants available for those two species. Demonstration trial showed the benefits of using a broader spectrum of pest control agents in control of H. nubiferana in organic apple growing compared to the current practice in Latvia. -

A large number of tortricid species have been inadvertently introduced into North America from Eurasia, and many have the potential to inflict considerable negative economic and ecological impacts. Because native species behave differently than introduced species, it is critical to distinguish between the two. Unfortunately, this can be a difficult task. In the past, many tortricids discovered in North America were assumed to be the same as their Eurasian counterparts, i.e., Holarctic. Using DNA sequence data, morphological characters, food plants, and historical records, we analyzed the origin of 151 species of Tortricidae present in North America. The results indicate that the number of Holarctic species has been overestimated by at least 20%. We also determined that the number of introduced tortricids in North America is unexpectedly high compared other families, with tortricids accounting for approximately 23–30% of the total number of moth and butterfly species introduced to North America. -

Biology and ecology A. citrana is adapted to cool maritime climates such as the caneberry-growing areas in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. The number of generations per year is estimated to three generations in caneberry-producing areas in Oregon. Larvae overwinter in grape clusters on the ground, under leaf litter, or on weedy herbaceous plants in vineyards such as curly dock, mustard, pigweed and California poppy. On apple, larvae overwinter in dead leaves remaining on branches and buds. On raspberry, larvae overwinter under buds on canes and under dead leaves tied up on the trellis with trailing berry canes. The species may overwinter as small or large larvae or pupae. Larvae begin feeding on developing leaves in late March and April completing development in late May. Pupation generally occurs at the larval feeding site in webbed leaves and in trash on the ground. Adults emerge in June and early July laying eggs in flat masses in smooth canes and on leaves. Eggs are laid in clusters on smooth surfaces, such as the upper side of leaves or fruit. Moths are negatively phototropic and remain in vegetation during the day. A. citrana has five larval instars and larval development requires 503 degree-days above a lower threshold of 5°C. Larvae are easily reared on artificial diets. Adult emergence in Oregon occurred from 300 to 700 degree-days accumulated from 1 January. Cumulative male emergence preceded female emergence by 50 to 80 degree-days. Following the time period of peak mating, male moths move widely among host crops within a region. -

Morphology and diagnostic characters of Hedya Hübner, 1825, Metendoth- enia Diakonoff, 1973, the Olethreutes group of genera, and the Neopotamia group of genera are discussed. We propose the resurrection of the combinations Hedya atropunctana (Zetterstedt, 1840), revised status, and H. separatana (Kearfott, 1907), revised status, and the new combination H. inouei (Kawabe, 1987). Olethreutinae, Olethreutini, Neopotamia, Olethreutes, spine clusters Introduction During a study of olethreutine moths collected in north and northwest Iran in summer 2007, we discovered a spe- cies that is superficially similar to Metendothenia atropunctana (Zetterstedt, 1840) but whose male genitalia differ from those of putatively related species in the distribution of spine clusters in the baso-medial surface of the valva. Moreover, the wing pattern revealed some similarities with species of Hedya Hübner, 1825. Additional material of the new species was obtained from field work and curation of the Hayk Mirzayans Insects Museum of Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection (IRIPP).
