However, studies of spiders’ responses to forest succession under natural and anthropogenic disturbance regimes are lacking. Yakushima Island in southwestern Japan has a unique forest ecosystem, and part of the island is designated as a world natural heritage site by UNESCO. Approximately 90% of Yakushima is covered by forest, including both plantations and natural forests. New information We made an inventory of spiders on Yakushima Island by collecting specimens in five forests (two plantations and three natural forests) with Malaise and window traps from 2006 to 2008 (a total of 637 traps). In this contribution, the design of the project, its objectives and the first available data for the spider fauna of two Islands (Pico and Terceira) are described. -

Mahavidyalaya, Kavathe Mahankal, Dist. -Sangli. (MS), India 416405 Abstract: Diversity of spiders from Zolambi region of Chandoli National Park in Western Ghats is studied for the first time. A total of 90 species belonging to 55 genera and 19 families are recorded from the study area during 2011-2013 with a dominance of Araneid, Salticid and Lycosid spiders. Key words: Spider diversity, Western Ghats I. Introduction Spiders comprise one of the largest orders of animals. The spider fauna of India has never been studied in its entirety despite of contributions by many arachnologists since Stoliczka (1869). The pioneering contribution on the taxonomy of Indian spiders is that of European arachnologist Stoliczka (1869). Review of available literature reveals that the earliest contribution by Blackwall (1867); Karsch (1873); Simon (1887); Thorell (1895) and Pocock (1900) were the pioneer workers of Indian spiders. They described many species from India. Tikader (1980, 1982), Tikader, described spiders from India. Tikader (1980) compiled a book on Thomisidae spiders of India, comprising two subfamilies, 25 genera and 115 species. Pocock (1900) and Tikader (1980, 1987) made major contributions to the Indian Arachnology, have high lightened spider studies to the notice of other researcher. Tikader (1987) also published the first comprehensive list of Indian spiders, which included 1067 species belonging to 249 genera in 43 families. -

British Arachnological Society The Newsletter July 2006, No. 106 Editor: Richard Gallon; [email protected] 22nd European Colloquium of Arachnology, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, 1st–6th August 2005 by Dmitri Logunov Bulgaria, an important but yet in many ways relatively unknown country of the Balkans, hosted the 22nd European Colloquium of Arachnology (ECA). The Colloquium, organised by the Institute of Zoology (the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), was held at the American University of Blagoevgrad (Fig. 1), a beautiful small town and the administrative capital of the Pirin Region in SW Bulgaria. It attracted 99 participants and 19 accompanying persons from 26 countries. Incidentally, the European nature of the arachnological colloquium was well extended as far south-east as Turkey and also included participants from India – for the first time there were participants from the Ni ğde University of Turkey (the research group of Dr A. Topçu) and from the Division of Arachnology of the Sacred Heart College in Kerala. I travelled to Bulgaria with my family and other colleagues in the ‘Manchester party’, Dave Penney, Emma Shaw and Sue Bennett, on 31st of July, i.e. the day before the official start of the Colloquium. Philip Pearson from Norwich joined us in Sofia. As most of the participants were arriving on the same day, we started reuniting with old friends in Frankfurt airport, where we all had to change planes or begin our journey to Sofia. More colleagues were met in Sofia airport and, as a result, Figure 1. (2009),24(1-3): 2 In memoriam JEAN-PIERRE MAELFAIT Kortrijk 01/06/1951 Gent 06/02/2009 Jean-Pierre Maelfait is ons ontvallen op 6 februari van dit jaar. We brengen hulde aan een man die veel gegeven heeft voor de arachnologie in het algemeen en meer specifiek voor onze vereniging. Jean-Pierre is altijd een belangrijke pion geweest in het bestaan van ARABEL. Hij was medestichter van de “Werkgroep ARABEL” in 1976 en op zijn aanraden werd gestart met het publiceren van de “Nieuwsbrief” in 1986, het jaar waarin ook ARABEL een officiële vzw werd. Hij is eindredacteur van de “Nieuwsbrief” geweest van 1990 tot en met 2002. Sinds het ontstaan van onze vereniging is Jean-Pierre achtereenvolgens penningmeester geweest van 1986 tot en met 1989, ondervoorzitter van 1990 tot en met 1995 om uiteindelijk voorzitter te worden van 1996 tot en met 1999. Pas in 2003 gaf hij zijn fakkel als bestuurslid over aan de “jeugd”. Dit afscheid is des te erger omdat Jean- Pierre er na 6 jaar afwezigheid terug een lap ging op geven, door opnieuw bestuurslid te worden in 2009 en aldus verkozen werd als Secretaris. Alle artikels in dit nummer opgenomen worden naar hem opgedragen. Jean-Pierre Maelfait nous a quitté le 6 février de cette année. Nous rendons hommage à un homme qui a beaucoup donné dans sa vie pour l’arachnologie en général et plus particulièrement pour Arabel. Jean-Pierre a toujours été un pion important dans la vie de notre Société. -

We report the first record of Icius subinermis Simon, 1937, one female, from Budapest, Hungary. We provide photographs of the habitus and of the copulatory organ. The possible reasons for the new record and the current jumping spider fauna (Salticidae) of Hungary are discussed. So far 77 salticid species (including I. subinermis) are known from Hungary. Wir berichten über den ersten Nachweis von Icius subinermis Simon, 1937, eines Weibchens, aus Budapest, Ungarn. Fotos des weiblichen Habitus und des Ko- pulationsorgans werden präsentiert. Mögliche Ursachen für diesen Neunachweis und die Zusammensetzung der Springspinnenfauna Ungarns werden diskutiert. Bisher sind 77 Springspinnenarten (einschließlich I. subinermis) aus Ungarn bekannt. Un cos de coneixements que s’ha anat formant pas a pas, com és característic de tot procés cien- tífic. La Conselleria de Medi Ambient és ben conscient que la conservació del patrimoni natural no es pot fer sense els estudis que ens han de permetre conèixer quins són els recursos sota la nostra responsabilitat i quin valor tenen. De cada vegada el gran públic coneix més quines són les espècies amenaçades i les accions per conservar-les troben ressò en els mitjans de comunicació i en la sensibilitat de la socie- tat en general. Però cal demanar-se: estam fent tot allò que és necessari per garantir la con- servació del patrimoni natural per a les generacions pròximes? Són suficients els coneixe- ments actuals d’aquest patrimoni? Quines espècies o quines poblacions són les més valuo- ses? Aquest llibre ajudarà a respondre algunes d‘aquestes preguntes. És un compromís entre la visió del científic, que sempre desitja aprofundir en l’estudi, i els gestors, que demanen amb urgència unes eines adequades per planificar les accions de conservació i avaluar-les. -

This was studied from September 2015 to July 2019. A total of 18 family, 52 genus and 80 species were recorded. Araneidae is the most dominant family among all followed by the silicide family. The main aim of this study is to bring to known the species which is generally observed by the humans in this area. Beside seasonal variation in species is higher in summer season as compared to winter. Also many species were observed each year in same season repeatedly during the study period, further maximum number of species is seen in vegetation type of habitat. Introduction As one of the most widely recognized group of Arthropods, Spiders are widespread in distribution except for a few niches, such as Arctic and Antarctic. Almost every plant has its spider fauna, as do dead leaves, on the forest floor and on the trees. They may be found at varied locations, such as under bark, beneath stones, below the fallen logs, among foliage, [23] house dwellings, grass, leaves, underground, burrows etc. (Pai IK., 2018) . Their success is reflected by the fact that, on our planet, there are about 48,358 species recorded till now according to World Spider Catalog.
