I DEFINED ~ < The University of San Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams, competes under the athletic nickname ofToreros. t In 1961 , the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding fatherofUSD, C announced that the school's ni ckname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the fri endly relationshi p which ex ists between San Diego and Mexico," Hi s Excellency said at the time. Torero comes from the Spanish term toro, the bu ll , and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are ca lled toreros. Torero is a general term d escribing a bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. USO student-athletes, li ke the Torero, represent a w illingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the cha Il enge.

The 2005-2006 school year marks the 45th anniversary with Toreros as the official nickname for USO at hleti c teams.

Entering hi s 27 th year as the head coach of the University of San Diego's men's soccer team, Seamus McFadden has built a program rich in tradi tion and success as one of the top soccer powers on the West Coast. Under the guidance of McFadden, the Toreros reached the NCAA Championship Final in 1992 and have produced double-digit wins in 17 seasons. In addition, USD has captured five crowns, the last one coming in 2000. However, 2004 proved to be quite an anomaly in San Diego soccer history, as the Toreros finished with an uncharacteri stic 7- 10-3 overall record and a fifth-place fini sh in the WCC with a 4-6-2 mark. Injuries to key players and a young starting line-up played a large role in San Diego's 2005 Team Seniors (l-r): performance last year and the team never adjusted Calle Rendahl, Tommy Von Bramsen. Seo// Martin , Jan Prochazka to the hurdles it faced. "We 've gone from a program that's had 17 years with double-digit wins to one that went through a little transition last year. We pl ayed the third-hardest schedule last year," said McFadden. "We had a very young team and we had a lot of injuries." One of the reasons why the Toreros did not fare quite as well as they hoped last season was because of their inability to put the ball in the net. USD had many opportunities to score goals, but was just unable to capitalize in given situations. Mc Fadden expects that with a year of experience under their belts and a hunger to return San Diego back to the top, his team will be able to finish their chances more often than not this season. "We've had guys in position to score last year, but just weren't able to pull the trigger. That was the biggest bogey for that team," said McFadden. "If we can put our shots away and finish our opportunities, we'll be a much better team." San Diego returns IO starters from last year's squad, only losing First Team All-WCC selection Kevin Wilson to gradua tion, and will tum to this season's trio of captains, senior Tommy Von Brom sen and red shirt juniors Kevin Meissner and Michael Caso, to lead the way. Von Bramsen is expected to anchor the Torero defense and Caso, a 2004 First Team All-WCC honoree, is USD's returning goal scorer after scoring six last season. Meissner is still recovering from an injury and will be brought along slowly, though he will strengthen the core of the team when he returns to full strength. "Huge," commented McFadden on the impact his captains will make in 2005. "If they are all on the field , I'll be expecting big things from them." Aiding the tri-captains on the fi eld in 2005 will be seasoned veterans Scott Martin, Calle Rendahl, and . Martin, who enters his senior year after starting 19 out of 20 games the previous season, will be playing defense for the Toreros this year after spending much of hi s career at the forward position, while fellow classmate Rendahl has the versatility to play either midfielder or defender. Guy, a junior forward who was tabbed a First Team All-WCC and a NSCAAAll-Far West Team selection in 2004, is San Diego's returning point scorer after tallying 15 points on three goals and a WCC-leading nine assists. McFadden will also anticipate contributions from senior midfielder Jan Prochazka, junior goalkeeper Lance Friesz, sophomore transfer Tannen Weis, sophomore defender Brett Hiroto, and freshman forward Leland Wright. Although the Toreros were picked to fini sh fourth in the WCC this season according to the preseason coaches poll, McFadden knows that his team has the potential and ability to do some damage, not only in conference play, but also during the postseason.

McFadden has been named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year a re cord seven times (2000, '99, '98, '95, '94, '92, '86); won five WCC championships; has coached eight WCC Defensive Players of the Year, six WCC Offensive Players of the Year and two WCC Freshman Players of the Year. Last year's youthful squad (16 underclassmen) finished 7-10-3 overall, but came through with a stunning 2-0 victory over then 2nd-ranked Santa Clara on October 15, 2004 in Torero Stadium. Two seasons ago his squad went 12-4-4, placed second in the highly com petitive WCC, and reached the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney. Three seasons ago SEAMUS he directed USD to a 14-6 mark and first McFADDEN round appearance in the NCAA Tourney. In 2001 the Toreros went 12-4-1 and four 27th Year seasons ago he directed his Toreros to a 16- McFadden At USD 2-2 record, another WCC title and its eighth trip to the NCAAs since 1990. That same year he was quoted in the 1999 14-4-0 4-2-0* 1st Rd team's 1998 12-9-0 5-1-0* 2nd Rd yearbook as saying: "I have no doubts 1997 11-7-1 3-3-0 that in the near future the University of San 1996 10-3-5 3-2-1 Diego will become a force to be reckoned 1995 12-5-2 5-1-0* 1st Rd with in Southern intercollegiate 1994 13-6-0 4-2-0 1st Rd soccer." Those 1988 10-8-2 1-3 -1 who know McFadden closely could see the writing on the wall many years earlier, 1987 12-7-2 when the Irishman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same 1986 19-4-1 time guiding Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San Diego Section titles and the La 1985 7-11-2 Jolla Cup. 1984 4-12-4 The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several 1983 1-14-0 of San Diego's best local talent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the 1982 3-15-1 city to showcase their talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros 1981 5-12-1 showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing 1980 0-12-0 to the NCAA Championship Game. Totals 264-188-37; 57-39-7 wee The 53-year old McFadden seems to save his best coaching for the big games. * won or shared WCC title Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked away with stun ning upsets over the heavily-favored Bruins. In 1994, USD shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cable television audience. In 1998, USD upset Cal State Fullerton, the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, at Titan Stadium in first round action. In 1999 the Toreros defeated then No. I-ranked Santa Clara on the road, 2-1 in overtime. USD is 8-10 in NCAA Tournament games under McFadden's direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976. That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to his homeland Ireland during the summer for exhibition games against Ireland and Britain's elite. In the summer of 2002 he is took his players to England. A native of Donegal, Ireland, Seamus and his wife davette have two daughters (Hadley & Rorye) and a son (Conor). Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid -Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a uni versity whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's architectural style. THE CAMPUS The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique insti tutions in the country, featuring major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USD has completed numerous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000 the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a 5,100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USD volleyball and . In the Fall of 2001 the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus, and a new Science and Technology Center recently opened for the 2003-04 academic year. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage (1 ,100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immacu lata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories.

ACADEMICS USD enrolls more than 7,400 students who have a choice of more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. A Message From President Lyons The University of San Diego is very proud of the student-athletes that represent our institution on 16 men's and women's NCAA Division-I athletic teams. These are proud and serious competitors, honored to represent the University. The dedication you witness on the playing fields, on the court, on the course, or in the water is greatly matched in the classrooms, the laboratories, on stage, or in the community. Last year forty percent of our student-athletes carried a grade point average above 3.2, and nine of our teams had a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0. Athletics is vital to the University of San Diego, a way students, faculty, staff and alumni come together as one community. I am both a university president and a Torero fan; I look forward to sharing the excitement D~Mary E.Lyons of Torero athletics with our many fans. President
