Lesbian and Gay Music
Revista Eletrônica de Musicologia Volume VII – Dezembro de 2002 Lesbian and Gay Music by Philip Brett and Elizabeth Wood the unexpurgated full-length original of the New Grove II article, edited by Carlos Palombini A record, in both historical documentation and biographical reclamation, of the struggles and sensi- bilities of homosexual people of the West that came out in their music, and of the [undoubted but unacknowledged] contribution of homosexual men and women to the music profession. INTRODUCTION TO THE ORIGINAL VERSION 1 What Grove printed under ‘Gay and Lesbian Music’ was not entirely what we intended, from the title on. Since we were allotted only two 2500 words and wrote almost five times as much, we inevitably expected cuts. These came not as we feared in the more theoretical sections, but in certain other tar- geted areas: names, popular music, and the role of women. Though some living musicians were allowed in, all those thought to be uncomfortable about their sexual orientation’s being known were excised, beginning with Boulez. -

The Barefoot Lawyers: Prosecuting Child Labour in the Supreme Court of India
THE BAREFOOT LAWYERS: PROSECUTING CHILD LABOUR IN THE SUPREME COURT OF INDIA Ranjan K. Agarwal* I. INTRODUCTION On the eve of India’s independence from British rule, India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, issued a challenge to the constituent assembly: “We end today a period of ill fortune and India discovers herself again. The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and achievements that await us. Are we brave enough and wise enough to grasp this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future?”1 For the most part, this challenge has gone unmet in the fifty-seven years since India’s independence. In 1999, twenty-six percent of Indians lived below the poverty line; sixteen percent of the population was officially “destitute” in 1998.2 As of 1997, India’s literacy rate was fifty-two percent, amongst the lowest in the world.3 Indians respond that their country is the largest democracy in the world, and one of the few democracies in Asia. In the face of economic hardship, communal and religious strife, the horrors of partition and the legacy of colonialism, India has remained a democratic country. Even then, democracy has not achieved for India the position of influence in the world and the more widely shared prosperity that its citizens hoped for their country. Too many Indians are poor, hungry, illiterate and view their government with contempt. For example, Indian newspapers estimate that hundreds of suspected criminals stood for election in the 1997 municipal votes in Delhi and Mumbai.4 Transparency International, a German anti-corruption organization, ranks India amongst the most corrupt * B.A. -

Keyboard Playing and the Mechanization of Polyphony in Italian Music, Circa 1600
Keyboard Playing and the Mechanization of Polyphony in Italian Music, Circa 1600 By Leon Chisholm A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Kate van Orden, Co-Chair Professor James Q. Davies, Co-Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Massimo Mazzotti Summer 2015 Keyboard Playing and the Mechanization of Polyphony in Italian Music, Circa 1600 Copyright 2015 by Leon Chisholm Abstract Keyboard Playing and the Mechanization of Polyphony in Italian Music, Circa 1600 by Leon Chisholm Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Kate van Orden, Co-Chair Professor James Q. Davies, Co-Chair Keyboard instruments are ubiquitous in the history of European music. Despite the centrality of keyboards to everyday music making, their influence over the ways in which musicians have conceptualized music and, consequently, the music that they have created has received little attention. This dissertation explores how keyboard playing fits into revolutionary developments in music around 1600 – a period which roughly coincided with the emergence of the keyboard as the multipurpose instrument that has served musicians ever since. During the sixteenth century, keyboard playing became an increasingly common mode of experiencing polyphonic music, challenging the longstanding status of ensemble singing as the paradigmatic vehicle for the art of counterpoint – and ultimately replacing it in the eighteenth century. The competing paradigms differed radically: whereas ensemble singing comprised a group of musicians using their bodies as instruments, keyboard playing involved a lone musician operating a machine with her hands. -

Printed in Germany Abstract The commentary focuses on the predominantly applied extraneous media in my music, especially the inclusion of literary sources. The discourse begins with a succinct description of the concept of polymediali- ty, which involves two dimensions: the work-immanent compositional dimen- sion and polymediality in the process of staging (Chapter I). Chapter II considers literary sources as a constituent component of music’s polymediality. The first part is preoccupied with the implementation of textual elements and vocality in -
Petr Eben's Oratorio Apologia Sokratus
© 2010 Nelly Matova PETR EBEN’S ORATORIO APOLOGIA SOKRATUS (1967) AND BALLET CURSES AND BLESSINGS (1983): AN INTERPRETATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE SYMBOLISM BEHIND THE TEXT SETTINGS AND MUSICAL STYLE BY NELLY MATOVA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Choral Music in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2010 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Donna Buchanan, Chair Professor Sever Tipei Assistant Professor David Cooper Assistant Professor Ricardo Herrera ABSTRACT The Czech composer Petr Eben (1927-2007) has written music in all genres except symphony, but he is highly recognized for his organ and choral compositions, which are his preferred genres. His vocal works include choral songs and vocal- instrumental works at a wide range of difficulty levels, from simple pedagogical songs to very advanced and technically challenging compositions. This study examines two of Eben‘s vocal-instrumental compositions. The oratorio Apologia Sokratus (1967) is a three-movement work; its libretto is based on Plato‘s Apology of Socrates. The ballet Curses and Blessings (1983) has a libretto compiled from numerous texts from the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries. The formal design of the ballet is unusual—a three-movement composition where the first is choral, the second is orchestral, and the third combines the previous two played simultaneously. Eben assembled the libretti for both compositions and they both address the contrasting sides of the human soul, evil and good, and the everlasting fight between them. This unity and contrast is the philosophical foundation for both compositions. -

DOWLAND Flow My Tears and Other Lute Songs Steven Rickards, Counter-Tenor Dorothy Linell, Lute John Dowland (1563 - 1626) Lute Songs
=ws€m=F 11l1lNAXOS Early Music Alte Musik .,,,, DOWLAND Flow my tears and other Lute Songs Steven Rickards, Counter-tenor Dorothy Linell, Lute John Dowland (1563 - 1626) Lute Songs John Dowland was the most famous lutenist-composerof his day. The principal aim of all writers of lute songs was to convey the story and the emotions behind the verse. Since Dowland was such a master of his instrument, he was able to write lute accompaniments which, though often complex and independent of the voice part, contributed equally to the word-setting. For this great skill he has often been compared to Schubert. Some of his songs are invitations to love (Come again: Sweet Love doth now invite). Sometimes the word 'love' refers to the lover and sometimes to Cupid himself, since the Elizabethans delighted in this sort of word-play. In Stay time awhile the lover tries to dissuade his partner from rising from bed so soon, using typical Elizabethan imagery to suggest that the light which she sees is not yet the sun rising but is in fact the light of love shining in her eyes. Often the lover is unsure as to whether his affections are returned. Many of Dowland's best-loved songs are those telling of the pain of unrequited love or of life's other tribulations, with images of tears, darkness, sorrow and death. Flow my tears was most typical of the Elizabethan era. Its opening theme, musically depicting the falling of tears, was subsequently used by composers all over Europe, which was a great compliment to the composer being copied. -
