The Allais Paradox: What It Became, What It Really Was, What It Now Suggests to Us

We emphasize that Allais proposed the paradox as anormativeargument, concerned with ‘the rational man’ and not the ‘real man’,touse his words. Moreover, and more subtly, we argue that Allais had an unusual sense of the normative, being concerned not so much with the rationality of choices as with the rationality of the agent as a person. These two claims are buttressed by a detailed investigation – the first of its kind – of the 1952 Paris conference on risk, which set the context for the invention of the paradox, and a detailed reconstruction – also the first of its kind – of Allais’s specific normative argument from his numerous but allusive writings. The paper contrasts these interpretations of what the paradox historically represented, with how it generally came to function within decision theory from the late 1970s onwards: that is, as an empirical refutation of the expected utility hypothesis, and more specifically of the condition of von Neumann–Morgenstern independence that underlies that hypothesis. -
Maurice Allais on Equilibrium and Capital in Some of His 1940S Writings
QUADERNI DEL DIPARTIMENTO DI ECONOMIA POLITICA E STATISTICA Ariel Dvoskin Maurice Allais on Equilibrium and Capital in some of his 1940s Writings n. 690 – Dicembre 2013 Abstract - The article discusses M. Allais’ contributions on equilibrium and capital during the 1940s. While in his Traité (1943) Allais formalizes for the first time an intertemporal general equilibrium (IGE) in a finite- horizon economy, he subsequently abandons this notion, and in the Économie (1947) resumes, instead, the more traditional method based on the notion of stationary equilibrium. The article argues: i) that Allais’ reasons to leave the IGE framework behind, of which the most important turn round his misgivings about the sufficiently correct foresight entailed by that notion, and that reflect the impossibility to establish a correspondence between observations and theory by means of the IGE method, are well-justified; ii) that his shift to the method based on the notion of stationary equilibrium to connect the results of neoclassical theory with observations cannot be accepted, since a notion of stationary equilibrium that would make this correspondence possible must face an insurmountable difficulty in the treatment of the factor capital. Mario Draghi: Luigi Einaudi and economic freedom Address by Mr Mario Draghi, Governor of the Bank of Italy, at the presentation of the book Luigi Einaudi: Selected Economic Essays, Italian Embassy, London, 17 October 2006. * * * Ladies and gentlemen, Let me thank the Ente Einaudi for the taking the initiative of having a selection of Luigi Einaudi’s works translated and thus introduced to a non-Italian public. I should like to congratulate the editors – Riccardo Faucci, Luca Einaudi and Roberto Marchionatti – the translators and all other contributors for a job magnificently done. Luigi Einaudi had a long, very active life. When he published his first essay in 1893, Giuseppe Verdi had just completed his Falstaff; when he died, aged 87, Federico Fellini had just shocked Italians – and possibly even Britons – with La Dolce Vita. A key actor in Italian public life, he passionately believed in the interaction between Italian, European and American intellectual circles. He was friend to people like Hayek, Huizinga and Röpke; he was instrumental in getting many authors translated into Italian, among them Beveridge, and he carried on an intense activity as a consultant of the Rockefeller Foundation, with great benefit for many young Italians who could study in British and American universities, even during the Fascist time. During three decades he was The Economist’s correspondent from Italy, so that it was also through his eyes that politicians and business leaders of the world perceived Italian affairs. Einaudi is certainly difficult to sum up in a phrase. He was in turn economist, historian, journalist, wine maker, bibliophile, central banker, politician, statesman. -

Franco Sbarberi Abstract: Benedetto Croce taught Norberto Bobbio to distinguish between two kinds of commitment, namely an intellectual and a political one. The expression “politica della cultura” effectively translates the idea of the autonomy or independence of scholarly and intellectual research. Another idea which was passed on from Croce to Bobbio is that of liberalism as the theoretical basis of every form of civil government insofar as the liberal conception rejects any notion of “Providence” as a covert agent of history. But Bobbio differed from Croce since he never believed that democracy could essentially contradict the perspective of liberalism, and was convinced that true emancipation is a sort of “conguagliamento delle libertà,” or, in other words, that it implies a strong relation between individual political rights and the demands of social justice. In the Preface to a bibliography of his writings that was published in 1984, Bobbio made reference to a “half-score” of his preferred authors. For the early modern period the selection seemed “almost inevitable” as far as the names of Hobbes, Locke, Kant, and Hegel were concerned. For more contempo- rary authors, on the other hand, he specifically singled out Croce, Cattaneo, Kelsen, Pareto, and Weber since they all represented, at one point or another, a crucial point of reference either for his own political development or for the considerable range of his intellectual interests (which also show him to have been a subtle analyst and systematic interpreter of the classic writers). -

‘NORTHERN GODS IN MARBLE’ The Romantic Rediscovery Marble of Norse Mythology [ KNUT LJØGODT ABSTRACT The Norse myths were rediscovered in the late 18th century, and became important to contemporary culture during the first half of the 19th century. The Romantics discussed the usage of themes from Norse mythology; soon, these themes became widespread in art and literature. Their popularity is closely connected with the national ideals and political situations of the period, but they were often given individual artistic interpretations. The ] Romantic interest in Norse myths and heroes held sway over artists and writers throughout the 19th century. Introduction Karen Blixen’s short story ‘Sorrow-Acre’, published in Winter’s Tales (1942) takes place at a Danish country estate in the late 18th century. During a conversation between the baron and his nephew, they discuss Classical versus Norse mythol- ogy. The young man has discovered the Norse myths through a recently pub- lished work: ‘He mentioned the name of the author, Johannes Ewald, and recited a couple of the elevated verses.’ The book he refers to is Ewald’s play The Death of Balder (1775). He goes on to praise the Norse gods: ‘And I have wondered, while I read,’ he went on after a pause, still moved by the lines he himself had declaimed, ‘that we have not till now understood how much our Nordic my- thology in moral greatness surpasses that of Greece and Rome. If it had not been for the physical beauty of the ancient gods, which have come down to us in marble, no modern mind could hold them worthy of worship. -
