Aqua Hotels & Resorts was a sponsor of the Kailua Bay Challenge - a very competitive and grueling long distance outrigger canoe race which has been held in Kailua Bay for the last 15 years.

While the race is a major fund raiser for Kailua Canoe Club, the main purpose is to perpetuate the ancient Hawaiian sport of outrigger canoe racing which is also the official Hawaii State sport. Over 300 paddlers competed last year and the race drew hundreds of racing fans and spectators.

Sponsorship and entry fees provide participants with specially designed commemorative race shirt and also funds youth scholarships to young paddlers who could not otherwise afford to participate in this Hawaiian sport.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 31, 2011

WAIKIKI BEACH, Hawaii – Aqua Hotels & Resorts is introducing a “beach boutique” concept to consumers in early 2011.

Known for carving out the boutique hotel niche in Hawaii several years ago, Aqua is further differentiating the brand by introducing a new “beach boutique” concept that consumers will see in ads and start to experience when checking in at several Aqua properties.

“We’re always listening to what our guests say and our research shows that they like staying in boutique hotels for the personal attention and they appreciate having beach items available when visiting Hawaii.” said Elizabeth Churchill, Aqua’s VP Sales & Marketing. “After all, does anyone have room to pack a couple of bulky beach towels or sand chairs in their ‘one’ allotted suitcase when space is needed for more important things?”

As a popular sun, sand and surf destination, Aqua’s creative team designed a bold new look for the guest amenities. The artsy-design (right) suggests a stylish, tropical beach destination and the selection of colors perfectly emphasizes warmth and ‘aqua’.

Aqua’s new “beach boutique” amenity items will be rolling out throughout 2011. The first item for guests to enjoy at the beach is the plush, custom beach towel, followed by the sand chair and more.

“It’s very important to us that our guests are happy and comfortable when staying with Aqua,” added Churchill. “We monitor trends and regularly reach out to our customers seeking advice on how we can improve our product. Our new “beach boutique” amenities are a prime example of how we implement guest suggestions.”

Aqua Boutique hotels offer beach amenities, stylish rooms and extreme value. Aqua’s Resort hotels offer lifestyle services and amenities without the luxury price tag. Lite hotels are the best bet for travelers’ budgets.

New name and new plans for Diamond Wailea Resort & Spa

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 15, 2009

WAILEA, Maui, Hawaii – Black Diamond Hospitality Investments LLC of Honolulu announced the renaming of Diamond Wailea Resort & Spa to ‘Hotel Wailea Maui’ effective June 15, 2009.

“Inspiration for the name comes from the understated ambiance and elegance of the Wailea resort,” said Jon McManus, partner, Black Diamond LLC. “Perched 300 feet above the magnificent Wailea community, Hotel Wailea Maui is an inviting hideaway that remembers the era when guests wanted a classy place to stay, maximum privacy and discreet customer service. The 72 suites are being updated with tasteful and comfortable decor to relive that style and complement the resort.”

Originally an exclusive club for affluent Japanese visitors looking for a tranquil and private tropical retreat, the resort’s timeless charm will be preserved but significantly refreshed. Upgrades for the suites include complete bath and lighting re-dos with added amenities. Two 32-inch flat screen televisions for the living room and bedroom, new sofa, original artwork, cordless telephone and i-Home clocks will be featured in the ultra-spacious 900 sq. ft. accommodations. New bed, luxurious new sheets with duvet, bed throw and plush bath towels will also be added.

“Because of the resort’s sprawling layout and buildings designed with just four units, work is easily isolated to minimize guest discomfort,” commented Henry Perez, General Manager. “Our plan is to have groups of buildings upgraded at the same time, allowing the process to move along very quickly. All work should be done by October 1.”

“Already completed are resurfacing of the pool deck and installation of new outdoor furniture including a fabulous ‘mojito’ daybed which must be experienced to be fully appreciated,” added Perez. “In comparison, work on other public areas will be kept to a minimum as the facilities have been well-maintained and are in pristine condition.”

The fitness center, located below the lobby level, and the full service spa will not be affected.

The Spa at Hotel Wailea offers customers an ocean view and Hydro Therapy System that includes a large whirlpool, dry sauna and pressure body shower along with a wide selection of relaxing and rejuvenating treatments including massages and exotic facials. “Our Spa may be the only facility in the Islands offering the ‘Nightingale’ facial,” noted Perez. “It’s a treatment that recently received national attention when it was mentioned on the Oprah show as a beauty secret of the women of Japan. The facial uses dehydrated nightingale droppings to lighten and even out skin tone.”

For small and mid-size groups, Hotel Wailea Maui offers a variety of meeting and function options. Kaimana Hall, a half moon-shaped room, provides a unique and creative setting with a private pre-function space accommodating up to 100 people. A Special Dining Room is set in permanent boardroom-style seating for intimate meetings of 2-15 people and features natural light and views of the spectacular waterfall and Koi pond. The extensive grounds, gardens and romantic gazebo offer picture perfect backdrops and stunning settings for special events, weddings and receptions.

Owners Mike and Aida Paulin give employees a ‘piece of the rock’

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 5, 2008

WAIKIKI BEACH, Hawaii – Mike Paulin, Owner & CEO of Aqua Hotels & Resorts, a full- service hotel management company, executed the final details of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan that converts Aqua into Hawaii’s first ‘employee-owned’ hotel company. This significant achievement makes it possible for Aqua’s 500 employees to become ‘co- owners’ of the growing Waikiki-based hotel company.

Aqua’s new and unique hotel ownership status is unprecedented in the Islands. Aqua believes hospitality is a highly personal business and this model further motivates employees, who are the cornerstone of the company’s success, by giving them a ‘piece of the rock’ for their diligent work and loyalty.

According to Paulin, “Aida (Mrs. Paulin) and I are sharing 30% of the company with our employees. Each member of the Aqua ohana is eligible to become a co-owner of Aqua after a fixed vesting period.” The value of the initial percentage share of the company is just over $8 million. At a later time, the Paulin’s plan to allocate more ownership of Aqua to their employees.

Paulin believes that the company’s product is its employees and its structure is the service it provides. “I have no doubt that Aqua’s ESOP will attract the best people in the industry to our organization contributing further to our highly regarded service,” added Paulin. “Our ESOP comes at a time when Aqua’s excellent customer satisfaction ratings are leading Waikiki hotels.”

Currently, three Aqua hotels rank in the top 10 of the consumer-driven TripAdvisor ratings and Aqua Waikiki Wave was awarded “Hawaii Region #1 “Best Hotel Values for 2008” by Budget Travel magazine.

While still a fairly ‘new’ company, Aqua’s employees have worked very hard to provide excellent service to their guests and create a highly respected Hawaii hotel brand. “Employee ownership is our way of thanking our ohana for making Aqua the Waikiki leader in guest service and we’re thrilled to make Aqua the first employee-owned hotel company in Hawaii,” added Paulin. “Employee briefings to explain the benefit and qualification process are scheduled. There is no cost to the employee for their participation in this benefit.”
