Hawaiian to Add Fleet of Long-Range, Single-Aisle Aircraft

Deliveries of New Airbus A321neo Aircraft Starting in 2017

Hawaiian Airlines today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with airframe manufacturer Airbus to acquire 16 new A321neo aircraft between 2017 and 2020, with rights to purchase an additional nine aircraft.

The long-range, single-aisle aircraft will complement Hawaiian’s existing fleet of wide-body, twin-aisle aircraft used for long-haul flying between Hawai‘i and the U.S. West Coast.

“Everyone at Hawaiian wants us to keep our position as the market leader in service quality, cost efficiency and choice of destinations. Ordering the A321neo will secure this legacy on routes to the U.S. West Coast beyond the middle of this decade,” said Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO of Hawaiian Airlines. “The A321neo will be the most fuel-efficient aircraft of its type after its introduction in 2016.

With its slightly smaller size we’ll be able to open new markets that are not viable for wide-body service, while also being able to augment service on existing routes to the West Coast of North America.”

At 146-feet-long, the A321neo will seat approximately 190 passengers in a two-class configuration (First and Coach) and has a range of 3,650 nautical miles. The aircraft will offer the more comfortable seat widths found in the twin-aisle Airbus A330. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, however, the aircraft have a total list-price value of approximately $2.8 billion if all of the purchase rights are exercised.

The new acquisitions are also contingent upon Hawaiian signing new agreements with its pilots and flight attendant unions covering operation of the new aircraft type. If new agreements are reached, the fleet expansion is expected to generate roughly 1,000 additional jobs at Hawaiian.

“This is a significant investment in the future of both Hawaiian and Hawai‘i. Our tourism-based economy and local employment will benefit as we continue our strategy of diversifying our business while improving the efficiency of our operation,” Dunkerley commented.

“We have come to think of Hawaiian Airlines as ‘ohana’ (family) and are very pleased to add yet another branch to our tree with this pending expansion of the Hawaiian Airbus fleet,” said John Leahy, Airbus chief operating officer, customers. “Hawaiian has gotten great results with their A330s. The passengers, the employees and the accountants for the airline all recognize the advantages of Airbus aircraft, and now they will benefit even further by flying the most popular single-aisle family in the sky.”

Hawaiian currently operates a fleet of 43 aircraft, comprised of 25 wide-body, long-haul aircraft (294-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft and 264-seat Boeing 767-300ER aircraft), and 18 narrow-body 123-seat Boeing 717-200 aircraft for Neighbor Island flights.

Hawaiian’s existing orders include an additional 13 new A330s between 2013 and 2015, and six next-generation, longer-range A350XWB-800 aircraft starting in 2017. The existing fleet of 16 Boeing 767s will phase out over the next 10 years.

Hawaiian Sets New Record with 9.48 Million Passengers in 2012

Hawaiian Airlines, Inc., a subsidiary of Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: HA), today announced its systemwide traffic statistics for December, fourth quarter, and full year 2012.

Hawaiian carried 9,484,204 passengers in 2012, the most in the company’s history. Passenger statistics for December and the fourth quarter were also company records.

Travel Wishes are Granted as Aston Hotels & Resorts Announces One Million HawaiianMiles Sweepstakes Winners

Aston Hotels & Resorts recently announced the winners of its One Million HawaiianMiles Sweepstakes. Each winner received the call, “Congratulations! You have won 100,000 HawaiianMiles, redeemable for travel anywhere Hawaiian Airlines flies!”

The ten 100,000 HawaiianMiles grand prize winners include: Terri B’Hymer of Renton, Wash.; Annette Brown of Poway, Calif.; Bonnie J. Davies of Las Vegas, Nev.; Barbara Daugherty of Amelia, Va.; Kathy Forbes of Minneapolis, Minn.; Dave Jorgensen of Wailuku, Hawaii; Margaret Kothakota of Stafford, Va.; Maiya Winston of Los Angeles, Calif.; Tiffany Tsuda of Honolulu, Hawaii and Ronald Yokoyama of Hilo, Hawaii.

Winning entrants now have the treasure of 100,000 HawaiianMiles in their mileage accounts. Now it’s decision time. Will their bounty take them to New York, the West Coast, Japan, Korea, Australia or Tahiti – or will they plan monthly trips to explore and enjoy another Hawaiian Island? The choice is theirs.

When Barbara Daugherty was asked where she plans to travel with the miles that she’s won she responded, “Hawaii, of course. I have always DREAMED of going to Hawaii and I can hardly believe that I have won these miles to help me to get there. Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Barbara and her husband plan to use the miles for their 30th anniversary celebration. Their visit to Hawaii will be the dream honeymoon they never had.

As for how Dave Jorgensen will use his winning miles, “We’ve been trying to make it back to the east coast to visit my mother and the rest of my family and we plan to use the miles to fly to New York City on Hawaiian Airlines.”

Margaret Kothakota plans to travel to Kauai, her favorite island, in May 2013 and stay for four weeks!

Terri B'Hymer hopes to take her husband to Maui, with a swing through Honolulu to visit her sister and family.

Ron Yokohama is excited to visit New York City again. He plans to bring his family to experience Broadway shows, Times Square, great restaurants and possibly take in the United States Tennis Association Open Championship. “It’s an exciting Hawaiian Air destination,” he said.

Annette Brown is thinking of somewhere adventurous because she and her husband are avid hikers. New Zealand, perhaps?

Maiya Winston’s goddaughter was recently born in Honolulu and these miles came at the perfect time! She and her daughter will be able to fly to Honolulu to spend time with new baby and enjoy the beauty of Hawaii! “We are both very excited,” she exclaimed.

In addition to the ten grand prize winners, another three first place winners were awarded a 4-night stay at one of Aston’s Oahu or Maui resorts: Daniel Samera of Fairfield, Calif.; Gabriel Harville of Papaikou, Hawaii; and Diane Carter of Sacramento, Calif.

Hawaiian Airlines Appoints Doreen Lawrence, Vice President of Inflight Services

Hawaiian Airlines today announced the appointment of Doreen “Dola” Lawrence to the position of vice president of inflight services. She started work on January 7.

Lawrence fills the position previously held by Louis Saint-Cyr, who was appointed vice president of customer services in May 2012. In her new role, she will be responsible for the delivery of onboard customer service and safety system-wide, as well as management and administration of Inflight operations and training for Hawaiian’s nearly 1,500 flight attendants.

“Dola is a proven customer service leader with a track record of providing high- quality inflight service that will serve us well as we continually look for ways to improve our already industry-leading onboard service,” said Charles Nardello, Hawaiian’s senior vice president of operations.

Lawrence brings 22 years of domestic and international airline management experience to Hawaiian in areas that include inflight service, catering, customer service, training, and sales. She has been serving as director of inflight and catering for Virgin America since March 2006. Before that, she served as director of inflight service for JetBlue Airways for five years. In addition, she has maintained her standing as a qualified flight attendant for the past 33 years.

Hawaiian’s inflight service has consistently proven to be a favorite of travelers to Hawai‘i. Consumer surveys conducted by Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure and Zagat have all ranked Hawaiian the highest of all domestic airlines serving Hawai‘i. Especially popular is Hawaiian’s signature ‘Mea Ho‘okipa’ (translation: I am host) inflight service program and how its cabin crews engage travelers with their celebration of Hawai‘i’s culture, people, and Aloha Spirit throughout the flight.

6TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL WAIKIKI HULA CONFERENCE PAYS TRIBUTE TO 50 YEARS OF MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL Registration is now open for the three-day conference.

HONOLULU Ð Hula enthusiasts from around the world are invited to celebratethe art of hula in its native surroundings at the 6th Annual International Waikiki Hula Conference, May 17 to 19, 2013 at the HawaiÔi Convention Center. Open to dancers of all experience levels with an interest in hula, the conference will bring together hundreds of hula lovers for a weekend filled with hula, chant, history, crafts and more.

The conference workshops, mele (songs) and hula will pay tribute to and celebrate the Merrie Monarch FestivalÕs 50th anniversary. The festival honors the legacy of King David Kal kaua, which perpetuates traditions, native language and the arts. The workshop mele and hula will be taught by award-winning kumu hula (hula teachers), some of whom have also competed on the famed Merrie Monarch stage.

ÒThe International Waikiki Hula Conference brings together members of the worldwide hula community with some of the industryÕs most renowned Hawaiian cultural practitioners to perpetuate the authentic art of hula,Ó said Marnie Weeks, International Waikiki Hula Conference producer. ÒWe hope that visitors and locals alike will join us in extending the celebratory spirit of the 50th Merrie Monarch Festival for this special weekend of appreciation and respect for hula.Ó

With over 80 Merrie Monarch-themed workshops at this International Waikiki Hula Conference, attendees will have the opportunity to learn hula with special significance to kuma hula. Participants, for example, will be able to learn hula to the mele ÒNani KolekaÓ (Beautiful Dorothy), written by kumu Cy Bridges in honor of the late Merrie Monarch founder Aunty Dottie Thompson. This mele was presented by his halau at the festivalÕs 25th anniversary and will be taught by kumu Bridges at the conference.

Kumu Maelia Loebenstein Carter, a former Miss Aloha Hula, will teach a hula kahiko (ancient dance), to the lively ÒMalua KiÕiwai Kealoha,Ó which she presented at the 2006 Merrie Monarch Festival with her own Miss Aloha Hula entrant. Attendees also will learn about Hilo, Merrie MonarchÕs hometown, and its special places through songs such as ÒHilo Hula,Ówritteninthe1940sbyJoseph NoheaKalimaandtaughtbyhis granddaughter, kumu ÔIwalaniKalima.
