By MARY BROWNIELD

A SUSPECTED dryer fire damaged one room and sent smoke throughout the rest of a home on Monte Verde Street just before noon Dec. 22. The residents, who had been renting the home for the past month-and-a-half, safe- ly made it out of the house with their dog and watched as firefighters, ambulance crews and police attempted to con- fine the fire. Carmel police were the first to arrive and used a dry chemical extinguisher on the fire “to slow its progress down for firefighters to make a quick containment,” according to the Carmel Fire Department report. Firefighters quickly con- tained a fire in a home on Monte Verde Street Saturday. As they checked for more hot spots (far left) and shut off the power (right), the residents, who were renting while the owners are out of the coun- try, took refuge with their dog in the yard (left).

A DECADE AFTER Smuin Ballet returns to Sunset with new ITS INCEPTION, leader, same unconventional approach BIG SUR ARTS GROUP REFOCUSES ITS MISSION

By CHRIS COUNTS

IN A world where reading, writing and arithmetic are considered the three pillars of education, the Big Sur Arts Initiative aims to teach children — and their families — about the importance of creativity. “Art is a universal communication tool,” explained Lisa Goetell, the new director of the Big Sur Arts Initiative’s Arts Bridge program. “It crosses cultural boundaries and familial boundaries. It allows us to communicate in a non-threaten- ing, expressive and authentic way. Art can bring people together.” Founded in 1997 by Big Sur painter Erin Gafill, and her husband, photographer Tom Birmingham, the Big Sur Arts initiative offers art programs for Big Sur children and their families. Now, after a decade of guiding the organization, Gafill and Birmingham are stepping back and handing the reigns of the group to a paid staff. According to BSAI’s new executive director, Karen Blades, BSAI fills an important void by bringing arts educa- tion to a community that is isolated by its geography. Carmel, Pacific Grove and Monterey offer diverse arts programs for children and adults. In comparison, while Big Sur is world-

Start the dream… call Ream: by MAUREEN MASON Certified Residential Specialist (831) 899-6569 567 Ortiz Avenue, Sand City | www.reamcon.com WHAT’S A LOW-RATE ARM? Lic #828540 | Licensed, bonded & fully insured Adjustable rate mortgages are often very difficult to compare to one anoth- er. Many lenders assume that the first— and maybe only—thing we’ll look at is $'23772'$< the loan’s initial rate. If we are looking ÊÊÊÊ œœŽˆ˜}ÊvœÀÊ>ÊÃÕÃÌ>ˆ˜>LiÊ at two comparable ARMs that adjust to ÊÊÊÊÊ changes in the one-year Treasury, as an example, and Loan A starts out at 4% while Loan B starts at 4.25%, we are inclined to favor Loan A. But there is more to look at here. One clear benefit that Loan A may have is that the highest rate "UTTERCUPISAN YEAR OLD#HIHUAHUAMIXWITHAPRETTY allowed is six percent above the initial rate, or 10%. If it’s six per- cent above the initial rate for Loan B as well, then the second loan BLONDECOAT AHAPPYSMILEANDLOTSOFLOVETOSHARE can conceivably reach a higher interest rate (by 0.25%) than can (ERFAVORITEACTIVITIESAREGOINGFORLITTLEWALKS the first. But there’s still more. The biggest issue is the “margin” for each loan. That’s the dis- ANDSNUGGLINGONLAPS"UTTERCUP tance from the index rate (in this case, the one-year Treasury) to HASATOUCHOFARTHRITISANDAMILD the actual adjusted rate. If the Treasury is 4.2% at adjustment time, and the margin for Loan A is 2.5%, your loan’s interest rate will be HEARTMURMUR BUTTHATDOESNT adjusted to 6.7%. If, however, the margin for the other loan is only ÊÊÊÊÊÊ MAKEHERANYLESSLOVABLE"UTTER 2%, Loan B will have a 6.2% interest rate at adjustment time—and ÊÊÊÊÊÊ it’s likely to remain lower than Loan A throughout the remainder of CUPISEAGERTOBECOMEYOURLIFE ÊÊÊÊÊ its life. But there’s one more concern. LONGCOMPANION ÊÊÊÊÊÊ You will want to compare the costs of originating each of these ÊÊÊÊÊÊ loans, watching for weird fees you just don’t understand. They can 6SRQVRUHGE\ add up to enough money to make one loan more attractive than the other. YOUNG REPORTERS know the drill. If you have no seniority, you get assigned to cover “Getaway Day,” or “Black Friday.” These utterly boring stories — about routine travel and shopping events — show up year after year, on seemingly every TV news broadcast and every news- paper front page. The reporters hate to do them. The readers and viewers learn nothing from them. Yet, irritatingly, they come back every year. Just like your in- laws. “After-Christmas shoppers look for deals” — front-page headline in the Dec. 27 Monterey County Herald. “Tonight, the big holiday getaway is underway ... on the ground ... and in the air ... millions of people on one of the biggest travel days of the year ....” — lead story on the CBS Evening News with Kate Couric, Dec. 21. “There are lots bargains out here ... lots of bargains!” — shopper in Buffalo, N.Y., on a nationwide NBC News radio broadcast, Dec. 26. Now, we have nothing against commerce and travel. These activities are essential expressions of human ambition and creativity. Unlike the Herald’s edi- torial page, we do not think it’s a “rave” if the stores and the airports aren’t busy. But neither do we think it’s news that a lot of people go shopping the weekend before Christmas or that airports are busy the Sunday after Thanksgiving. And that’s why we never cover those stories in The Pine Cone. Too boring. There’s another thing which is utterly predictable, but which remains a staple of newspaper, radio and TV news coverage. When something happens which is getting a lot of attention but which does- n’t have much depth — say, a sudden increase in the price of gasoline, or a hor- “We’re in a mixed relationship.
